Well, for me it was Mom calling me. And there seemed to be a direct relationship between me being online and my Mom (and everyone else) wanting to talk. IOW, I could spend a whole day working on honey-dos or channel-surfing and not a phone call to be had. But jump online for some CTF or CS, or to download binaries out of the newsgroups and ring-ring-ring all day long.
Oh boy now that's something I haven't done in a very very long time. Was trying to remember if was uucp or uucico then came to the realisation it was uuencoding/decoding.
The others were used my very early days on the net that wasn't a uni (which had a full news feed) when I used dialup connection to pull down subscribed groups where then tossed in software on my FreeBSD system.
it's still a thing to day for those who pay for usenet news feeds (the days were ISPs carried them are pretty much gone) but provides an alternative to torrenting.
For us, I want to say it was Freeserve, but I'm not entirely sure. I also used madasafish at one point, but they didn't have the break part.
For me it was all via dial-up using a variety of news readers before settling on Forte Agent. And newgroups are where my first online Trek discussions occurred, both in the rec.arts.* and alt.* hierarchies. I did like the newsgroups for the binaries though because people in the groups were good about flagging the corrupted or non-working files.
Yea, when newgroups were dropped, I figured if I had to pay money, I should pay the owners of the content.
Does anyone use OBS Studio? I used to be able to configure it with DJ software and the Traktor Audio 2 soundcard but since re-installing the operating system and re-installing it I can't seem to get it working. I'm about ready to join the OBS forums because I can't work it out.
Or a tablet purchase...Sorry, I've never used OBS Studio, can't help you there I'm afraid, maybe just threaten the computer with a hammer..

Here's a question. I have been watching videos about Quantum Locking and levitation. One of the interesting aspects of quantum locking is that another object can be sent underneath of a top object without the motion of the bottom object being impeded as the object travels around the track.
Would it be possible, in some way, to layer HDD on a Quantum Locked track using a high speed laser, write and read data from each HDD disc as it travels around the track?
Could logic gates be moved around such a track to perform different functions to be followed by other other logic gates performing other functions?

No, a harddrive is a stack of platters made out of glass or metal coated with a magnetic material where read/write head are positioned between them and moved by a voice coil actuator, HDD's store data by flipping the orientation of the magnetic domains on the disk's surface and that's it.

Well, since we are into flipping, if the HDD platter can be turned 360 degrees inside of a Quantumly Locked system, could the platter hold twice as much data?
I have refreshed my idea from earlier. Inside the Dyson Box there are two tracks that Quantumly Lock a magnet in between both fields. Since most CPU's have a limited operating speed due to size, stacking the logic gates around the internal components that are also suspended inside of the Dyson Box should give the CPU a tremendous amount of potential logic to operate from.
None of the components would ever touch each other. Soldered boards would be a thing of the past.

I've got a really ancient XP machine, I barely have used it so over time it became somesort of time capsule, it was installed in 2009 or 2010 or so and while I've did some updates to its software here and there it mostly remained unchanged, so after spending a year inside a box in a closet I took the thing out and yeah yeah.. BIOS battery dead, put in a new one, reboot and luckily the BIOS is really simpel, it's a Foxconn board which were very rare here, now I could fill in most settings from memory except FSB speed, the RAM itself is 800Mhz DDR2 but the board didn't have that option, tried 667Mhz but nope so 533Mhz (after resetting the BIOS with a jumper) is as fast as it would go which puzzled me a bit, but it seems it's a chipset limitation, i945GZ which officially supports 400 and 533Mhz, so 667 would indeed be iffy, no idea why the BIOS features it, ah well, otherwise the machine is fine, it's a Pentium Dual Core E2160 at a blistering 1800Mhz with 4GB of RAM a 200GB SATA HDD, PATA DVD ROM and of course a 1.44MB Floppydrive.

It's freeware which captures audio and video like Fraps but does everything without having to pay to upgrade. I've used it to capture video game footage and youtube videos and it's perfect for this and that part is working fine since re-installing but it gets more complicated when I add an external soundcard because I can't remember how I configured it so the computer records the audio through the Traktor Audio 2 soundcard instead of the onboard audio. This is important because the audio is pushed to the EQ limits with the DJ software so it needs to be the best quality. I never realised the difference until I bought the soundcard.
The soundcard has 2 x two channel outputs so I have one stereo outpuyt for headphones and one for leading to the line in port or the microphone ports and both ports on the PC sound terrible no matter how much I juggle all the different volume controls. Usually I avoid the mic port and prefer the line in port as there is less noise and it's easier to manage the volume but both are equally bad quality so I'm stumped.
This is an example of what I'm tying to do and shows OBS at the start and then launching the DJ software. I'm working on a new mix that I want to record like that but can't recreate the audio quality. The video aspect is easy enough but OBS has so many settings for audio inputs and audio outputs I can't remember what it needs to be. I'll work it out eventually and sometimes just posting about it makes me have a eureka moment.
I have machines ranging from the '80's all the way up to 2021 so casings in all kinds of colours including black, silver, beige and light grey.
