General Computer Thread

So has anyone heard news about the Silver Sparrow porgam that was detected? I hadn't heard of it before tonight, and I found (and deleted) a version that showed up on my MacBook via MalwareBytes. I don't think it caused any specific problems, and from what I've read it's been said the known versions don't have an actual payload, but appear to only be a shell program that could be used to execute commands if another version is created. Or at least that's my general impression. ;)

I guess my main concern is I can't think of anything unusual I did or where the version might have come from. The only thing I can think of in relation to the description Silver Sparrow has to do with having Flash for a few applications (like being able to embed YT videos for example), but not very many. I haven't done much with Flash since it's no longer an official product, and I still get prompts to update it rather amusingly. But I'm also concerned that, as mine is an older laptop, I might not be able to download a specific Apple patch if they decide to do a patch. I don't foresee a huge problem, but I'm curious.

I've rarely ever had MWB catch something problematic, and it seems to have cleared it with no trouble. I'll keep an eye out since I've seen at least one report of someone saying they couldn't get MWB to delete SS, but I don't know enough details about their system.

according to wiki, experts are unsure on just how it spreads but flash is one possible option, another is web search results.

Flash is EOL and apple should take a leaf out of Microsoft's book and put out an update to purge the thing from people's computers.

Though it's demise (which should have happened sooner) has caused a problem or two. For example in China (iirc) it was a big part of their administration for the rail system and they had to resort to a pirated version and other tricks to keep things running I'll let you guess the outcome.

I've thankfully rarely ever had trouble with Flash. I remember back when it was the Big Thing.

Flash indeed should have been gone a decade ago.. ye gods, the holes it had/has.. it just wasn't designed for the modern era.

Re-discovered my Compaq Deskpro 2000, it is powered by a Pentium 200 MMX, haven't switched it on to see what I installed on it but I think it was Windows 95

^^ That is indeed rare, usually the fire suppression systems of a large datacenter would be quite extensive and quite fast as well.
I really wonder what happened..

Not something that happens everyday.

A large data center in Germany has been damaged by fire with one building totally destroyed and another has been damaged.

https://www.datacenterknowledge.com/uptime/fire-has-destroyed-ovh-s-strasbourg-data-center-sbg2

Something must have gone seriously wrong or there was a major issue with their fire suppression system.

I hope that OVH didn't host the datas about the border and gave Strasbourg back to Germany ;)
Well actually, the French state use OVH for some datas so maybe...

I work in a medical lab and we have lost our site and our result server (the one accessible to patients), at least for the moment.

At leats we have a pretty picture :

OMG.....That's big........ How far away were you?

I know it's bad stuff but there certainly is something to say about those old halon extinguishing systems.. pity these also can extinguish oxygen breathing bipedal organisms..

Approx. 500 km  : this is not my picture, I found it on twitter with the comment "this is how datas reach the cloud".

Haha the caption is perfect..... Help

While watching a dvd on an Intel Nuc I have built for testing I paused the dvd to go out the room for a minute or two when I came back the screen was flickering and there was a buzzing noise from the speakers. This has only happened twice so far in the time I have had this device but I've never actually caught it happening.

The only thing I have to go on in event manager is a Kernel power outage that happens at the same time this happens.

Not sure what Intel is trying to do but their Rocket Lake chips set new records.. in powerdraw.. I know it's peak power but 292 watts ?? in POV-ray it does 200/255 watts
https://www.anandtech.com/show/16535/intel-core-i7-11700k-review-blasting-off-with-rocket-lake/2

This thing is an 8 core /16 thread CPU so in the AMd Ryzen 7 5800X class, the latter only has a peak power draw of 141.45 watts

Not sure you can bolt a Threadripped capable cooler on Rocket Lake chips but you'd need one..

I literally organized all the benchmark results here in this thread on Level1Techs
It should be much easier for you to view all the results without having to cross look at different benchmark pics

Obviously, the details and context for each benchmark will be in the original article.
