Spoilers "Superman & Lois" Season 1 spoiler discussion!

Sigh. Lana would not be angry at Kyle about how--and you would do well not to miss this--if he stepped up (as a husband should) when Edge was making his suggestive comments. Kyle is not some random bystander. He is her husband and that--for anyone who is in such a relationship--carries all of the natural emotions, instincts and responsibilities that come in a marriage. That is what Lana expected from Kyle, but he just sat there--not being her husband--as she was subjected to Edge's ill-minded dialogue aimed at her. That is the reason she would ever be so angry at Kyle. Again, Marriage 101.

If Kyle lost the town 400 jobs, and Morgan foreclosed on all the mortgages, and the town died.

Lana may have an opinion on that.

Lana may have an opinion on that.

Hypothetically, if she blamed him for that--after he stood up for her--then it would say more about their lack of martial understanding than anything suggested by their daughter. So, it would come down to what is more important--the town's survival (which no one has any real control over, as many desolate, abandoned American towns stand as evidence of that fact), or the relationship you were supposed to commit yourself to?

In the olden day in England type places, the nobles were allowed to sleep with the peasants, and were expected to sleep with all the new brides on their wedding nights to other men.

If this version of Morgan Edge is hundreds of years old, because anyone working for Darkseid has upgrades, that could have been one of his responsibilities.

PS.

This episode was written by a man and directed by a different man.

Whatever woman thing emotional state they thought they were writing about, they are way off base. And it's weird that we have to pretend that Lana is rational, because her feelings are genuine, when she is a work of fiction by a man.

"Don't you think it was awkward, him cornering me, asking about my job, offering me an opportunity? You didn't even ask if I was uncomfortable, do you even care? It's not about you. He made me uncomfortable, and you didn't even notice. Is that where our marriage at?"

He didn't corner you. You were both sitting where you wanted to sit when you were told that this is where you were going to eat. Unless you mean verbally cornered? But that just meant that he's smarter than you and you didn't like it.

He didn't ask about your job. He knew everything about your life, the only question he asked is how could you be happy wasting your life mucking about in shit like a poor? Truth bombs hurt Lana.

Kyle did notice you were uncomfortable, but he assessed that you would be more uncomfortable if he laid out your bosses boss, so he let it ride. Obliviously he should have faked a seizure, and ended the conversation with a trip to the hospital, but he's not a crazy person.

Or...

There's more going on to this that we don't know about yet, and Lana is manipulating Kyle with half truths for reasons unknown.

My first guess is that Lana is a plant, working undercover for the FBI against Edge.

This offensive talk, occurred in the first minute of a dinner that may have lasted as long as an hour, and then she waited hours more, till they were all the way home to explain that Kyle was a cuck.

The statute of limitations had successfully passed in the opinion of every man on the planet.

If Morgan Edge and Maxwell Lord had a kid together... The kids surname would be Edge-Lord, which is something you can look up on Urbandictionary if you have to.

But Edge was talking to Kyle through Lana.

Lana was a conduit for Edge's attack on Kyle.

Edge wants a super soldier.

That's only going to come about by breaking up their marriage.

That fight we saw, happened because Edge is smart, and they are dumb.

There's a strong possibility that Lana made up that story about how her feeling weren't checked and it made her doubt his commitment to her as person, because he disagreed with her.

"Morgan Edge is a jerk."

"He likes to throw his money around but he's okay."

Everything after that rebuke was punishment for assuming he had a right to any opinion that did not identically mirror her own. She used every weapon in her arsenal to crush Kyle, even if she was misrepresenting herself.

Which is how debate works.

You can argue for either side, and win representing affirmative or negative, independent of what you actually believe.

Superman and Lois
Season 1 - Episode 5 - "The Best of Smallville"

Clark/SM / Lois: Sharon Powell and her once-missing son's tale was--as Lois realized--a tale. Sure enough, Derek Powell suffers from an attack, triggering his heat vision. His calling Leslie Larr (before the bigger reveal) was all the evidence the audience needed to realize Edge is trying to create a super-army (SEE NOTES). Lois was creeped out enough by Alt-Luthor, but her reporter's sixth sense only has her thinking his interest is job-related. When Alt-Luthor makes his move, it will be fascinating to see her reaction--or how she intends to deal with him.

Jonathan / Jordan Kent: You just knew Eliza was bailing on Jonathan would lead to his boiling over--just as Jordan's Smallville life--as a football player and burgeoning relationship with Sarah--looks better with each passing week.

Heh--Jonathan referring to Lois' advice as "Cosmo Girl opinion" That was actually funny, despite the nature of the scene.

His anger is justified--it was not Jonathan who needed to get away from Metropolis, and no matter how supportive he's been with his brother, he ends up on the losing end of life, and even after Clark gave him the option of making some other arrangement in the even things do not work out in Smallville, Jonathan still has to cope with having his real life ripped away from him, much of that decision designed to help "Superboy".

Alt-Luthor: As noted in other reviews, his motives for trying to kill Superman (whether the Alt-SM had anything to do with the end of his relationship with Alt-Lois) are utterly divorced from reason, and not in the "well, he's suffering from PTSD and/or insanity" way, but his entire motive is without sense from a storytelling perspective. The fact the writer(s) had the A.I. remind Alt-Luthor that Lois is not the one from his world points to the inherent weakness in this character's purpose.

Edge/Kyle/Lana/Sarah: Clark was so incredibly reckless using his freeze breath to put out the fire--he did not even think that frost on rubble--surfacing right after a suddenly vanishing fire--would not set off suspicion. In fact. Kyle's reaction read like someone who probably knows more than he's willing to admit.

Lana and Sarah were dumping on Kyle; one of his fellow firemen was seriously injured, and while drinking your sorrows away is never a remedy for an emotional issue, Lana could have been more understanding. Sarah was triggered by Kyle's song, but i'm not going to explore the possible reason why at this time.

With Sarah not wanting a relationship with Jordan, and her being so concerned with hurting Jonathan's feelings, it would not be a stretch to think she might see Jonathan as more than a friend.

NOTES:
Larr, "Subjekt 11", Tag Harris (now in Lane's/DOD's hands) and Derek (now dead)--once again--seems to be setting up a metahuman arms race (if the DOD is not partnering with Edge) that DC-CW viewers have already seen explored to the hilt on Black Lightning. It would be tiresome for this series to replay that kind of conflict.

All too convenient that Teen Clark mouthed off to Martha about his place in the world, and feeling out of place, as the parallel to Jonathan's issues.

A costumed Tag Harris attacks Jordan, demanding to know what he did to him. In Tag's previous appearance, he had no clue why he was suffering, so one must assume he was given very specific information (based on his recollections about the incident which injured him), and who was in attendance--namely Jordan. That information must have been provided by Sam Lane, who is likely trying to discover ways of mining the Kent children of their genetic benefits.

Next week:
Superman and Lois takes a vacation, being replaced by the premiere of Supergirl's final season until May 18th.

GRADE: B.

Great episode. Liking this Luthor a lot. Also Sarah and Jordan's relationship.

Looks like maybe without Lois in his life alt-Superman may have been a little...brittle.

Would he just think that Superman was there?

Does anyone else watch the show on The CW app? For the second week in a row half the episode had the audio out of synch with the video. It felt like I was watching a badly dubbed movie.

Not bad. A lot of storyline progress, with "Captain Luthor" finally getting more involved, and a confirmation that Earth-Prime Lex Luthor does indeed exist as a separate person. (Although when Derek said to Superman "You're not alone anymore," I was miffed at the lack of acknowledgment of Supergirl.) And apparently he was married to his Earth's version of Lois. Oh, boy.

Plus some flashbacks to Clark's adolescence, which seems to be following the Donner version of his backstory. I would've liked to see a fresher take, although at least they added some proto-Superboying to the mix. And the actor playing young Clark was more convincing as an adolescent than Tom Welling ever was. (Welling was as old at the start of Smallville's nearly decade-long run as Clark was in its final season.)

It was puzzling that Clark put out the fire clandestinely rather than just swooping in as Superman. I guess maybe he doesn't want to raise suspicion by having Superman start showing up in Smallville regularly, but if that was his reason, then using cold breath to put out the fire was maybe not a great idea.

I still love how dorkily enthusiastic Hoechlin's Clark is. He really loves the Harvest Festival.

Would he just think that Superman was there?

Not really, since Superman has been trying to limit his visibility in a town that has new transplants from Metropolis. By now, Clark knows how his power works, so frost on rubble seconds after a building was going up in flames would raise suspicion to a fireman who knows what should or should not be in such a situation. Kyle behaved like someone realizing "something" was going on.

I was so getting into this, and now they take it away for a month and a half. Ah, well.

The romance angle between Larr and whatever Kryptonian - fellow Kryptonian? - she's trying to resurrect with X-Kryptonite at least introduces an intriguing element to the Evul Edge plot line. Much preferable to the standard-issue villainous hand-rubbing of last week.

I like Jordan and Sarah a lot. I went into this braced and prepared to hate him. The friction and angst created by the device of flipping his life's expectations with Jonathan's plays really nicely. And Hoechlin is a frighteningly good Clark, which is always more important to making Superman work onscreen than, well, Superman.

But Tulloch is the franchise player here. I could watch her and her editor all evening, like doing any show on HBO.
