Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

Some people have gotten the eaglemoss model already. Looks like a lot of the detail on the bottom of the STO model wasn't added by them, it was there in the show

At some point in the design phase it was called 'Neptune Class', and the front part of the saucer was a shuttlebay. It also started as a background ship.

BTS Info on the Inquiry via the Eaglemoss booklet:

Book confirms length of the class as 630 meters.
(By comparison, the Avenger class in STO is 430m).

It reveals no new in-universe details about the ship and class.

Background material includes STO (Perpetual Entertainment era) concept art, and it's discussed how the ship was based on a concept for a game. STO is not referenced by name, for some reason.

New tidbit: The ship was originally meant to be a Starfleet cargo ship appearing in a background shot in eps four or five, and specifically have a 120m-wide cargo door at the front. This is where the little landing bay at the upper bow of the Zheng He comes from.

After the cargo ship was dropped in revisions, there was not meant to be ANY Starfleet ship in the season. Until Eaves got a call to present a Starfleet ship for the season finale. He finished the drawing in one hour, emailed it, and it was VFXed within weeks.

To be honest, I'm not too sure they had any idea how to end it when they began. Trek, especially in the Berman years, would start 2-parters and not even really about the second part until they got back from their holiday. It's something I wish they'd work on. Start at the end and work backwards.

Actually I’ve always felt that the DSC ships would have fit better post-TUC rather than pre-TOS. Technically that would be the 24th century, but at the start of it, not the latter half of it.

Disc's ships generally look like the half-baked crap that STO tends to put out. For every Regent or Odyssey class they come out with they also put out a half-dozen designs that are like "slap some vaguely Federation shapes together and call it a day".

Well that's an uncommon opinion if I've ever seen one.

For one the Regent is ugly, and 2, almost every time there's a new ship design a majority of posts on reddit/twitter/official forums are positive towards it.

For one the Regent is ugly,

Not a fan of the Sovereign line, I take it? That's all a Regent is, a modernized Sovereign.

There might be a few (like the Pathfinder skin for the Intrepid class that are pretty good, but there's also garbage like the Stargazer and this monstrosity

Smh...
As in all things, though, your mileage may vary.

How then, did it happen that we DID get a new Starfleet ship at Mars?
Maybe Eaves didn't design that one? He's not the only ship artist on the show.

Those are all designs that came with the game in 2010. Almost none of the designs from launch looked good, almost all the Fed designs that have come out in the last 7 years or so has looked great.

I like the Sovereign itself, I don't like any of the variants in STO, other than the Refit based off John Eaves' concept art.
