Spoilers Star Trek: Discovery 3x13 - "That Hope Is You, Part 2"

When they said "It is a suicide mission" I instantly knew that none of them were going to die, that kind of took away some of the tension from some the scenes.
In overall the final was bit of an mixed bag for me. I enjoyed some of the scenes on the holodeck/planet but found some of the action scenes bit dull, even with the nice visuals. I did like the ending scenes also and the new uniforms.

I really need to re-watch the season later in a tighter pace to give more overall detailed review of it..but I have liked most of what we saw. I am happy that the cause of the burn was not some evil villain plot or Starfleet conspiracy, its makes more original story, though I can understand why it feels anticlimactic to some viewers.

A few thoughts on the episode, and the season as a whole.

So, with Burnham becoming captain, are they basically saying that they have given up on the original premise of Discovery being from the perspective of someone who is not the captain? It makes the show very similar to DS9. The only different was that Sisko was the commanding officer for the first 3 seasons, whereas Burnham was not. Unless Burnham’s promotion is part of an arc where Burnham relishes command to someone else by the end of next season.

The writers are either trying to make Burnham either female Kirk (not believing in no win scenarios), or the anti-Janeway (written consistently), or both. I’m not sure what direction they are taking with her now. Although S3 Burnham has been the most likeable Burnham yet.

Also, the final scene seemed like the episode was meant to be a series finale, before someone changed their minds.

That the Burn was because of an emotional reaction to Su’Kal losing his mother…I get the sentiment the writers were trying to portray in terms of losing a loved one. But it also means that the Burn could have been started by anyone if they were in the same situation.

Glad that they did not kill off Osyraa so quickly, like with T’Kuvma in S1, and Bjayzl in PIC. If antagonists are not going to be recurring characters throughout the series, then they should at least have longevity within the season.

Also glad that they made some sort of effort to develop Detmer, Owo, et al this season. Although I still feel they could all be blown out of the shuttle bay during movie night due to a computer malfunction and no one would care. They have bizarrely gotten less development than Mayweather from ENT within the same amount of seasons, and Mayweather had no lines most of the time.

I take it that Saru is gone from the series, based on the ending. Or at least will be more of a special guest appearance going forwards.

Basically, aside from the Burn plot, & “Unification III” everything could have happened in the 23rd century, with some slight adjustments.

Hopefully, season 4 will do more worldbuilding and character development & progression, instead of just solving mysteries.

I don't want the Spore Drive to be rendered useless.. too many workable opportunities for non-Warp FTL technology (which were also much faster) have been passed on by the writers. It would be dumb to backtrack on that.

It was an overpowered concept to begin with. It's probably time to reduce it's importance.

or perhaps they added/redid the voiceover way into 2020? It’s something easily done remotely and it’s not as if there wasn’t the time...

That mysterious melody that occured everywhere, was that explained? I feel like I missed something.

It was a deformation of the Kelpian ship’s rescue signal. How it got into a lot of people’s mind across the galaxy is unexplained.

It would have been interesting if they used the Burn as some global warming analogy.

They did something similar in TNG: repeatedly traveling at high warp damaged the subspace, making it unusable. Unfortunately it was referenced only occasionally afterwards and dropped completely in DS9 and Voyager (Voyager’s background material address it saying that the new designs solve the problem and that was it).

Then how would you rate legitimately bad episodes like ‘Threshold’, ‘Code of Honor’, ‘Way to Eden

Idon’t know why so many hate way to eden: personally I find it very funny in a campy way and the ending was genuinely tragic and hardly predictable.

Also, code of honor’s script want that bad (it wasn’t good either, but not a theresold), it was the casting choices that were extremely questionable.

I don’t remember Starfleet knowing about it, though, only his friends.

I remember a certain cloud vampire making trouble in TOS.

true, or also in the 24th or almost any sufficiently advanced era. But honestly this is true for most of Star Trek or even other stories in general: a story is very rarely so strictly tied into events that take place in an era that it can’t be moved in another.

about those turbolift shafts being as roomy as Spacedock...um...anyone?

What was with the turbo lift tubes? Why is there a vast cavern between decks?

We saw the bridge consoles get overlays for programmable matter in the episode where the ship was overhauled.

This sad pile of... flotsam... that has Star Trek attached to its name.

I am sad for Star Trek, and I am sad for any semblance of what was once considered "writing" in television.

They even play the TOS theme at the end for no reason other than to shout "LOOK, A BEAR!" and hope you don't pay attention this utter trash. I mean really, WHY!? WHY? Oh throw in a Gene Roddenberry quote too? Subtle!

Arrghhhh.

What makes me said is that episodes 4 and 5 of this season were great. I thought that's it... they have it... Star Trek is back. Oh no.

I am definitely done watching. This isn't rage quit for dramatic effect. God I've been involved in Star Trek websites/journalism since 1996. I'm not not knee jerk.

I just need to stop watching this for my own sanity. And if you see me talking about Discovery in season 4... which is not impossible as I'm weak willed... please shout "ANTONY STOP WATCHING AND SHUT UP". And I will thank you.

The pre-series interviews qualified that she would not be a captain at first. It was pretty clear that this was going to be her arc.

Doug Jones has repeatedly indicated that he’s filming S4.

So did they blow up Osyras ship because didn’t think the fleet could handle it? Seemed an awful risk to depend on Book being able to work the spore drive WHILE the warp core is on the brink of blowing them all up.

I really enjoyed this one, I was pretty happy with how they tied everything up.
I'll admit the explanation for The Burn was a little silly, but I was still worked for me. The stuff with Su'kal did give us some great emotional scenes for everybody involved. It was nice to see Gray get a chance to actually interact with more characters. I hope they find a way for him to get a physical presence next season. I was impressed with Ian Alexander when I first saw in The Last of Us Part II, and he did a great job in Disco too.
We got some great action here with the fight to take back Discovery. The Osyraa/Burnham fight in the computer core was especially good.
The only thing that really bugged me, is something that's bugged me since the beginning, the giant open turbolift system in the middle of the ship.
I was a little surprised to see Burnham get command of Discovery now, I figured that wasn't going to happen until the end of the season. I'm assuming this means Saru will probably just go back to being first officer once he's back from Kaminar.
I was pretty happy to see them switch everybody switch to the new uniforms. I like them, if nothing else their at least better than the Voyager 2.0 uniforms we got on Picard.

You're right, god like beings are a common theme in Trek. And, you're probably on to something. If you're alright with those beings, you might well like the resolution for the Burn. But, I'm not a fan of those god like beings. I find them boring. I'm looking at you Q! Also, I think as the answer to a season long mystery, it's not particularly good or creative.

If I never see Q again I wouldn't miss him. But if the price I have to pay for some top notch performances by Bill Irwin and Doug Jones is a dilithium mutant linked to subspace I'm willing to pay it.

Yeah, the emotions of the characters pay off far more than just the fact that they are god like.

Like many of you, I don’t know about how I feel on this episode. The drama of potentially killing the crew, Burnham becoming captain, the terrible holodeck = sub space, the magnetic warp engines, Book using the spore drive and the ghastly turbo lift and computer core sets. However, then they go and make it bloody brilliant with the ship warping away to the original Trek theme music, and I feel so emotional, I’ll give it a 10.

Lockdown is really draining and I love Fridays being Star Trek day, so if any of the production folks read this, keep up the good work and I’ll see you for season 4. Bravo. The possibilities are endless.

You would give something with that many problems a score that means "Best Episode"?
