Do people still watch Star Trek to enjoy it?

Or are most fans just looking for things to dislike??

Because I'm sorry..... But there's so many posts and topics about everything people find bad about Star Trek. Same shit happened when Enterprise was first aired. I don't understand really. I often feel weird when I watch the latest Discovery or Picard episode, come online, and find many reasons why I'm supposed to hate what I just watched, while I really enjoyed it.

Yes. I enjoy The Orville very much when I watch. Also I do like Picard and I think Discovery is better this year. Trek though is something in which you don't have to even enjoy the whole thing. I recall De Forrest Kelly once saying that what made Trek great was the moments. Each episode, even bad ones have special moments. Since I like several of the characters in Discovery their is often scenes or moments I like even if the episode was bad.

For example the last episode of Discovery was bad and mostly boring. But I did like the spaceship battle. Also Saru coming up with a Make it So style catchphrase. Also liked the scene were the penis monster ate the guy.

I don't really watch the other CBS shows. I look up what they're doing but by now I have stopped watching both (I tried DISC season 3 because the concept intrigued me). They're not my taste.

I keep track of what’s going on, but generally don’t care for the CBS live action fare. I’m absolutely in love with Lower Decks.
I absolutely detest Lower Decks and it's (so far) defeated my intent to watch all of Trek. Four episodes to go...

I've seen the rest (even TAS) and have, to greater or lesser extent, watched it all for pleasure. Even Voyager and the Kelvinverse movies.

I'm loving Discovery and Picard.

Different strokes and all that. If we all loved the same things life would be pretty dull.

I haven't seen Lower Decks yet (Dutch guy) but from what I've seen in trailers it looks amazing.

But the amount of hate for modern Star Trek these days has me wondering if I'm just wrong with enjoying what I'm getting or if the fanbase is just filled with Old Grumpy Men who aren't getting what they remembered and not being open for new ideas and concepts? Not understanding that this is 2020, not 1987. That the world has moved on, and so have the franchises we enjoy. Hell, I'll even go as far and say that I feel Discovery right now is really hitting some of those 90's Trek vibes.

Yes, I very much watch it to enjoy it. It why I’m not overly critical of PIC and LD compared to others. Even ENT, I really mellowed out on the criticism towards them and generally enjoy what has been produced, once I understood the various challenges that they faced behind the scenes to make the show era-appropriate. Even TATV, even though I can come up with new alternative ideas for that finale all the time, I’m not really critical towards anymore.

Criticism in itself is not bad. it helps to keep things consistent with canon and makes sure the experience is worth watching. Sometime it has helped the show because better, and other times, criticism can make foe interesting discussion points

Criticism is why S2 and S3 of DSC are seen more positively compared to DSC S1, since it pushed those on the show to do better. It's why ST: Beyond was an improvement over ST: Into Darkness too.

Remember that the internet tends to amply voices that were already there, both positive and negative.

Absolutely.

Lower Decks was always off to a poor start with me as I'm not really very keen on animation. It could've still been bearable, but the frenetic delivery and general silliness sunk that for me.

It's more of a taking the piss (albeit affectionately) out of Trek rather than a comedy set within Trek. And, crucially, I haven't so much as smiled, let alone laughed. I will, eventually get around to watching the last four episodes, just for completeness sake.

I'm glad it has people that appreciate it though. People have worked hard on it.

As for the live action shows - essential viewing for me, first thing on the day they drop.

If I did not enjoy it, I would not watch it.
That's pretty reasonable.

However, having watched what, over 600 episodes (?) and 13 movies, I'll be damned if I'm going to be beaten by four 20 minute animations !

Yeah, dumb, but...

Welcome to the Internet where hate watching has been a thing for a while. Or maybe it's just trash talk and these critics really enjoy it.

As for me, I watch Star Trek. I'm a fan of Star Trek. I don't or can't distinguish any further, so I'm not a TOS fan but refuse to watch DS9 or whatever... It's Star Trek, so I watch it.

Some are better than others. VOY was bad, but I was in a Voyager group so that made watching it more enjoyable, and Tom Paris is one of, if not my number one favorite character. Still, I can admit and complain about VOY. I found ENT horrid and I've not rewatched any of it since initial broadcast. I felt ENT was evidence the current powers that be were tired and it was time to let Star Trek rest a while. I have a strong dislike for the Abrams movies because I find them to be nice parodies of Star Trek.

The current batch is a mixed bag for me. DISCO is the worst of the bunch. Any series that needs to retool and reinvent itself each season is really not a good series. I enjoyed Pike's time on DISCO and felt early to mid season 2 was what Star Trek was all about, so I'm looking forward to SNW. I really enjoyed PIC and LD.

I'm the same with Star Wars. Hated Episodes 7-9, loved Rogue One, Solo, Clone Wars cartoon, Rebels, and now Mandalorian. Resistance was just a little underwhelming, simplistic and it tied in too much with the sequel trilogy.

Your mileage may vary.

Love all instances of trek, though mileage may vary on each episode.
I actually sit down and watch each episode. Alot of series im working on models or computer while it's playing. I'm paying attention but not fully involved.
I do quit series, loved all stargate except universe. That series was just bad and still haven't watched season 2.
Even stopped watching battlestar galactica but did come back to finish it.

But then that's a very good point. Extremists will always shout quite loud as a minority.

Isn't that with almost everything? Look how it went with black Pete. The minority screams and treaten and with succes.

Just try to ignore the negative and enjoy the positive

Yeah...... I'm against Black Pete...... And the loudest screaming in my direct enviroment is from people Pro Black Pete. They're more extreme, violent and angry than the people against.

I agree with this post 100,000%. I've had enough of this.

It's the reason I didn't post in the DSC Forum the first two or three months the show was on. Then I made the mistake of deciding to give it a try. Three years later, I've realized, "No. I was right the first time." Ditto for Picard.
