Ron Moore wanted to make it a -A but the budget got in the way IIRC. Too late in the season to justify the cost.

So, it's completely possible that the Defiant (2375) will be confirmed as the -A in Lower Decks, Picard, future episodes of Discovery, or even Prodigy (depending on what year it takes place in).

Tilly (I think?) says some of the ships appear to be organically grown. Could this be a nod to Doug Drexler’s personal canon for the Enterprise-J? He’s said in interviews and such that his lore for the Universe-Class is that they’re grown in some way.

Book wasn't in this episode at all. Was he debriefed? Did he just chill out in his cloaked ship?

Book left the ship in episode 2.

Yeah, clearly Book is not a "new main" despite being introduced as such in the promo materials. He's like Reno, only appearing as the plot requires it.

I did my usual get up at 6 am so I could watch it twice before starting my day at work. Granted, I did not sleep well, so I was tired, but I slept through the re-watch and was kind of disappointed overall. With all the pictures of the characters in awe they posted in advance, I kind of expected that they would deliver on just how amaaaazing headquarters would look. I felt let down - it did not blow my socks off. And while I am in total alignment with some of the other posters who feel like character work is more interesting than the technology, I do feel like I should have some excitement about the 32 century. Seats without supports don't completely do it for me.

I did not like what happened with Nhan, I hope that is setting up something that will play out later in the season, but I am not super convinced that will happen. Why is HQ so homo sapiens dominant, particularly since Earth is not part of it? There was an interesting conflict about what to do with the Discovery crew that came up and then was dropped as they all resumed their stations to help the Kili two minutes later. That conflict seemed vaguely interesting, and I was kind of disappointed we did not see the crew dispersal. Seems like a missed story opportunity.

Why bother to have Tig Notaro in this episode? Wouldn't it have made more sense to use her in the dinner scene in the prior episode? She kind of seemed wasted here. Aside from her "No we haven't."

The things I liked, I am not a Burnham hater for the record, but I did enjoy her doing her usual lippy thing and the Admiral being quick to put her in her place. She should be put in her place now and again, come to think Saru did this too. And while it was total fan service, I did like the shot of Voyager-J (and that it was the J like the Enterprise we saw in Enterprise was the J).

Sorry to be so butt-hurt on this one. I am really looking forward to reading everyone else' take on this episode - the things everyone notices and talks about is always interesting and I hope it will change my view on this one.

Not my favorite episode. I think this should have been two episodes: one with returning to Starfleet and one with them earning their keep. It was a lot in a little bit of time, and starships and tech aren't really the biggest reason I watch Star Trek. Its cool but a starship is a starship is a starship. For me anyway.

I'm very confused about Nhan's departure and her being a series regular. I figure this isn't the last we've seen of her. Perhaps her arc brings us into the V'Drysh part of things. Perhaps they have laid waste to Barzan II and that brings her back to Discovery. Or it might be her end. Very weird.

The seed stuff was interesting and the family arc was just typical old Star Trek.

Cronenberg/Yeoh was the best part. I can believe I'm saying that about Phillipa.

Overall, it was okay but nothing special. 6/10.

Book left the ship in episode 2.

Episode 3. He's only appeared in two. I figure he'll be a bigger part as the season goes on.

She prob shot her looking out the window and lab scenes for this episode during the filming of another episode...........it comes down to her availability and shooting around it.

My biggest question of the week is what did the Section 31 guy (David Cronenberg) do to Phillipa........she's clearly been scrambled a bit. Next week we see her passing out...........

True but that doesn't necessarily mean that the two are linked in any way. Maybe she was just thinking about something and not paying attention to what was going on around her. That happens to lots of people. It's funny that she knows how to incapacitate 32nd-century holograms though. One would think they would have corrected 23rd-century defects by then. They're just as bad as the people who "maintain" windows 10... with their failing updates.

Did I miss something? Did they establish Cronenberg was Section 31? I mean it makes sense, but just wondering if I missed him saying something.

I loved this episode, just as I've mostly loved the first four episodes of this season. One quibble, but as an anthropology major it bothers me -- Saru's talk of the "Dark Ages" is disingenuously Euro-centric. Much of Asia and North Africa was thriving at that time. I wish writers would take that into account. I love the whole "we're searching for the Renaissance" concept but still, lol.

Maybe it's star fleet academy that is Euro-centric. Saru is only drawing from his education.
