That sounds like Starfleet and the Federation will not want Discovery's help. My guess is they will see Discovery as an old relic and the crew as out of touch with how things work now. But by the end of the episode, Michael will prove that Discovery can help and they will agree.
I do hope we don't get the evil admiral trope. Please don't make this new Starfleet secretly a bunch of jerks.
I am definitely looking forward to this episode. I hope we get a lot of world building and a lot of information about the state of the galaxy and about the Burn.
I mean, they could be a bunch of jerks without being evil. Kind of like Rodney McKay in Stargate. He was a complete jerk because he thought he was the smartest guy in the room. Discovery is going to look extremely ignorant in comparison to the Federation so it could be easy for them to be jerks at first.
True. But I really meant it as two separate things. I am hoping Starfleet is not evil OR jerks.
But I agree that Discovery may come across as hopelessly old fashioned compared to the present day Starfleet. So Starfleet may come across as jerks without really meaning to. I fully expect we will get a scene where an admiral tells Michael or Saru something like "Look, we appreciate what Discovery has been through (leaving everything & taking the Sphere Data into the future) but you guys are relics of the past. Your tech is obsolete. You have no idea what is going on in the galaxy. We've been working to rebuild the Federation for a hundred years, ever since the Burn happen. We don't need you meddling in our business."
In some ways, I'd understand if Starfleet had that reaction. Would we want humans from 930 years in the past showing up and trying to tell us how to fix things? Probably not. And we'd definitely not want them taking matters into their own hands and trying to meddle in our business.
I do wonder with the fact that time travel has been banned, if Starfleet may actually try to disband Discovery or try to send them back because they would be seen as a threat to the timeline.
I am hoping that is a topic of conversation. Time travel will always loom over Discovery as to why they couldn't go back. If they are worried about Control, then leaving the Sphere data with 32nd Century Federation is as good a place as any. No need to keep people behind if there is an option.

Discovery has the spore drive. I can't see how they wouldn't be a tremendous asset, especially in a world without plain old warp drive.
What other twist can they put on things to make them not useful? Can't wait to see. They've done a good job of avoiding clichés so far.

Here's a good one. There was already Revisionist History about the 23rd Century in the 24th Century -- most notoriously in "Flashback" (VOY) -- that must've become even worse by the 32nd Century.
I bet Starfleet Command expects the Discovery crew to act a certain way and maybe they'll be surprised when the crew isn't what they thought it would be (i.e. "Those Old Scientists" or "Wild West Space Cowboys & Cowgirls").
