Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

Maybe Starfleet learned things about hull design from Voyager bringing back ablative armor technology from the alternate future timeline? When Voyager deployed its armor it didn't have any external hull markings nor pennants and perhaps the ships of 2399 - or at least some of them - employ backengineered ablative armor technology that reduces the visual call signs of a vessel?

Ben Robinson announced there are 4 versions of the Zheng He at 10:28 in the youtube announcement. So I was off by one in my original observation/estimate.

This jibes with the quote from the original artist himself as well as what the original author of the article told me.

When they first show up, you can see two different nacelle types. The one (red) has more lit up bussard collectors right on the front. The (orange) one might be the same as the (green) one with two lit sections on the top & bottom front outer points.

I just saw this post now...my number 2 matches up with your yellow circled ship. They have bussards on the top and bottom, the other 2 don't. Its pretty clear.

Yeah, I must be blind because 2 and 3 look the same to me. And the two ships in the second pic look basically identical.

To be honest, it had to be the time crunch.

I like the basic lines, the origin, and most of the details, which appear to me to be a somewhat more brutish military detail in the Sovereign era lineage added onto some pretty graceful, futuristic-looking curves.

I really like the scene and its not focused on that clearly, so most people wouldn't really notice. I think we'll eventually see a more polished version on screen, but I'm happy Eaglemoss has one coming out, I'll be the first one in line buying it.

#1 has different nacelles than 2 and 3, so it’s not a valid comparison. And the difference between 2 and 3 is that one nacelle has two lights and the other one only has one? Since when do lights being on or off constitute an entirely different class? Some of the ships have their impulse engines glowing and some don’t. Does that make them different classes too?

It would be nice to see the CGI model of the ship with the other type of nacelle to make out these alleged differences. So far we’ve only seen the first type of nacelle. Either way, they’re all just the same class (Inquiry) with different nacelle configurations.
