It is clear she belongs much higher up, she sabotages her own career.
I dunno, she acted like a complete noob when she was out there in front of her friend.

Like "Forget your Tricorder"????

How often do you see any other StarFleet Officer travel without their Tricorder?

Brilliant episode, loved the solid plots, the many callbacks and everything in general, even the silliness of The Dog, cracked up at the Warp 10 former human and great to see an Edosian again (even if I originally took him for a 7482).

So they have bridge windows in the 24th century now...Oh well!

The “ship gets totally thrashed” is starting to get a bit cliche, but I see that not having to worry about budget limitations they might get carried away.

And guess what: humans that remain out of phase due to problems with a transporter: weren’t we talking about remaining conscientious while in the transporter beam just a few days ago?

Did you not watch the entire episode? Did you not see her face when she embraced her friend in the Ready Room when made First Officer?
I saw that, but that shouldn't affect her performance as a StarFleet Officer.

Compartmentalization of FriendShip and your effing job.

She needs to be Professional.

Mariner knows better than to "Leave the Tricorder" on the ship.

This is probable. Speaking of my own career, however, I’ve been a coding trench fighter since the beginning and hope I can continue doing software development into retirement (another 15 or so years). I’ve had many opportunities to jump on to the management track, but I never wanted to do it because 1) I couldn’t afford the initial pay cut and 2) the interpersonal bullshit would quickly force me to jump into a wood chipper head-first. “Get the fuck over it, pretend to act like an adult for once and get back to work” is probably not an effective management style these days. I recognize my limitations. :D

Not everybody wants to be a "Manager".
Sometime's it's better to be a IC (Individual Contributor).

Please read the "Peter Principle":

I did the management thing in Bank Operations, wood chipper would’ve been preferable.

She messed up on purpose or just didn't care. Take your pick.

She should just learn to say, "No. I don't want to do this," upfront.
I'll take messed up on purpose. Mariner has shown that she can be professional if she feels the situation warrants it. But, since being promoted means jack all to her then aspiring for it by doing her job perfectly wouldn't be in her interest.

It could also be her way of getting back at her parent’s expectations. Every Starfleet party they go to, they have to admit their daughter is still an Ensign. Which is likely embarrassing.

Probably so. It's Mariner's way of having some ownership in her career in terms of their expectations.

I think Mariner believes strongly in Starfleet but she can't stand the bureaucratic red tape that appears to dominate officers lives to get stuff done. She reminds me a bit of the Maquis in "Learning Curve." "You didn't ask permission to go fix something; you just did it."

Mariner's a total fuck up on this Away Mission. She's making the Guest Captain look really bad. ;)

She explicitly says that she was pretending to fuck up to undermine any chance her classmate would offer her a promotion and transfer to her ship. It's a pathetic thing to do and she should spend some quality time with a ship's counselor to work through her issues, but the ways in which she was fucking up didn't matter because it was essentially a milk run of a mission.

But once shiznit got real, she rose to the challenge.

The most unusual Starfleet ship ever?
And what kind of tunnel does it fly through?
Looks like Wayne Tech still exists in the 24th Century.
