Star Trek: Lower Decks comics discussion

Hey folks,

I'm a huge Lower Decks fan and while I prefer to think of them as, "exaggerated canon" (ridiculous as such a concept may be as long as Spock's Brain is normal canon), I have to say that I love them in every possible way. So, I'm glad to have the comic books so the adventures of Boimler and Mariner can continue. I think they'll probably be comic-based long before there's a humorous sci-fi novel version (Paramount, call me! JK).

I was curious what people thought and thought it'd be good to have a thread for bringing up the various concepts.

So far?

I actually think quite a few of the 2024 comics are pretty damn DARK. Seriously. The handling of the expanding universe plot and the Time Terrorist were pretty bleak endings.

I did love the miniseries with Holo-Dracula, though.

I haven't read the comics since the culmination of the USS Bonaventure plot. I felt like the resolution was underwhelming and it's put me off the comics. But I'll come back to it.

I admit, the most recent intrigues me because of the return of DOCTOR PULASKI.

That was something I never expected.

I'm a huge fan of the show, and I've been loving the comics so far. I didn't really notice to much of a drop off in quality with the new writer last issue.
Oh, and Warp Your Own Way was amazing.

Well in today's Lower Decks #16, the scrapyard at Starbase 77 includes on page 3

possibly one of the Friendship class from DIS season 3 et al.
one of the Oberth class
an obscured something that might be Saber class
one of the Hoover class from DIS season 1
one of the XCV-330 type from the TMP background painting et al.
A Federation attack fighter
one of the Texas class from LD season 3
one of the Miranda class in the iconic U.S.S. Reliant's configuration
one of the Olympic class
one of the Kumari class
one of the OV-165 type from the ENT opening credits
one of the Duderstadt class from PIC season 3
one of the Excelsior class in classic configuration

This last one was a lot of fun. I especially got a kick out of their plot to steal the Illinois, and the reveal of who was on the ship was pretty funny.

I feel kind of bad Doctor Pulaski is lumped in with "other silly Star Trek stuff that everyone pretends doesn't exist but Lower Decks uses."

I think this is the most Trek has used her in years, though.

Hi @JD , this seemed to be a plot-related element from a recent issue, so I have blurred it out.

All, please remember that this isn’t a spoiler thread, so any spoilers from recent issues should be spoiler-coded. Thank you.

Oh, sorry I thought since it talked about them stealing a starship in the description it would be OK. I apologize.

No need to apologize. To be honest, I don't read the descriptions in advance (to avoid spoilers), so I didn't realize it had been mentioned there.

She's popped a few times in the books some.

She's made an appearance somewhere else recently too. Unfortunately, saying where would technically be a spoiler I guess, so catch-22.

Yeah, so happy to see that character.
I'm also very curious to see who the aliens on the warship are.
This issue was a lot of fun, I think this whole storyline has been my favorite since Tim Sheridan took over as writer.

Is this the first licensed Captain Worf story?

No.
Picard: The Last Best Hope showed Worf promoted to the E-E captain when Picard left. An alternate-reality Captain Worf appears briefly in Q&A. And Worf was acting captain of the E-E in Collateral Damage, which ended with Worf being put on the short list for promotion to captain, although he never got there due to that continuity being ended shortly thereafter.

Yes!
I gather you mean in context of Worf being the regular CO of the U.S.S. Enterprise-E in the Kurtzman era of streaming canon. The novel The Last Best Hope introduced the notion ahead of season 3 mentioning it as backstory, but the novel never showed Captain Worf or the Enterprise. Neither did the comic miniseries Picard - Countdown nor the novel The Dark Veil.

Lower Decks would not have been the place I would have expected to get the first Captain Worf story. I wonder if we'll get to see who the rest of the crew under his command was? I'm curious if Geordi would have moved up to XO or stayed Chief Engineer.

Oh huh. I just realized Tim Sheridan has written more than six issues continuously, hence the return of the U.S.S. Illinois from an earlier arc. I had subconsciously thought it was incredible the series brought back plot elements between arcs.
