Spoilers What SFF Character Is The Most Miserable?

Buffy has a crap life for the most part. Boyfriends don't work out for very long. She's died more than once, having to dig her way out of her grave the second time. She was yanked out of a nice afterlife to come back and fight vamps, etc, again.
At yet she has great hair and seems to be able to eat whatever she wants, so she's got that going for her...

Well, they did use to remark about her hair, but the latter, I'm not sure unless you count drinking directly out of the milk carton. I can't remember if she ate at the double meat palace or not...but she did avoid being eaten there.

Buffy is miserable in season 6, but at the end of the series when the pressure is lifted off her she ends up happier. Angel is more perpetually miserable than Buffy. Besides the fact he becomes a mass murderer if he ever gets happy, there's that 200 years in a hell dimension.

And yes, she did eat at the doublemeat palace, she brought their food home for Dawn because it was free. But turns out double meat was actually impossible meat.

You could also make an argument for anyone in Star Wars who is eaten by the sarlac.

If we count self-inflicted misery, Rimmer from Red Dwarf and Marvin from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy definitely count.

I haven't seen it, but it sounded like Icheb had a pretty rough go of it on Star Trek: Picard.

Sazed in The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson.

Me while reading the Gentlemen Bastards books by Scott Lynch, lamenting how much better these would be if he hadn't killed off the best characters in book 1. :(

Oh, definitely so. I think I read the first four or so books, but the lead wasn't anywhere near the cheery sort:)
Self-hating religious fanatic (given that he grows up in a theocracy, the religion bit makes sense. But as with many Trek characters, he is more pure than the others. Some of the later books deal with him realising that while he believes in Lord God, most people just pretend)
