Lower Decks Trailer Analysis

I'm not one to invoke The Orville all that much, but I'm hoping we have a similar situation here with the trailer. The early promos for that show were mostly all the worst humor from the show, basical none of the more nuanced stuff (for obvious reasons).

Whether for brevity (probably) or because they think it's the stuff people most want (maybe) my hope is that the LDS trailer material is just the snappiest stuff they had available, and doesn't represent the general comedy level of the show. I'm kind of hoping that the M.O. for the show is, "Try to mostly do jokes that Trek can do." (ie: If the gag could work in just about any cartoon ever, maybe come up with something else.) If the show doesn't go that route, I'll just settle for it being good. ;)

Personally, I liked it. I was expecting humor that was more like Rick and Morty or Solar Opposites, and that’s what it delivered. I enjoy both of those shows. Yes, the comedy is maybe childish (I laughed at the part with the blast shields), but in times like these, I find some comfort in that. (And yes, I’m an adult.) I’m really eager to see how the show turns out and am more excited for this than perhaps any new Trek in years.

Trailers lie.

Trailers lie.

Indeed. I remember when the first trailer for Insurrection came out and it used footage from First contact. 18 year old me didn't quite realise this due to only seeing it once ( i think it aired on Entertainment Tonight) and took it to imply that the Enterprise would be battling other Federation Starships and it would be an action packed extravaganza. Imagine if you will my disappointment coming out of the theater. I was definitely feeling some 'aggressive tendencies'

I quite liked the trailer, it was pretty funny and the characters appear to be likable. I hope it won't have the same nihilism as Rick and Morty, because that really keeps me from liking that show.

It does remind me a bit of Final Space, which is not a bad thing. And I found the blast shield gag pretty funny, it's adorable how the lady is so excited about the new technology.
Also were those fish people the same aliens as those from TNG Manhunt?

And if I remember correctly that trailer (or at least one of them, no clue which one child-me saw) also made you believe that there'd be people getting attacked and disintegrated by death lasers, when int he movie it was just that teleportation thing the antagonists used to collect the immortal space hippies.

Sorry, I just can't fathom an adult finding this funny. I have a hard time imagining it appealing to any age group, honestly. It's just not good.

Comedy is completely subjective, I know, but we're approaching "Ouch, My Balls" and "Would you buy that for a quarter?" territory here.
I'm 32 years old and I found the trailer very funny. No, it's not the most high brow style of humor, but I don't care, I still find it funny.

The trailer looked OK, I'll give it a fair chance, what more is there to do until then?
Have you seen this thread? There is lots to do!

There is assumptions, and insulting the design/writing/jokes. There calling it not real Star Trek. There is demanding a new forum.

Come on, man! Where's your rampant need to complain about something new!

You always have to remember that others view the world through a different lens. The "I can't imagine anyone else liking this because I think it looks bad" approach is a big bias. Sense of humor is probably one of the most varied things there is.

You can see, just on this thread, the varied reactions people are giving it. So, of course some people are going to like it. Some will probably love it. Others will detest it with the intensity of a 12th power energy field.... Same $hit, different day.

I'll throw you a bone. I don't like Star Trek Into Darkness. There. There's a Star Trek that's come out since 2009 that I haven't liked. I'm also lukewarm on the Harry Mudd short.

I don't actively hate either production, but I definitely view them as low-points for both sub-franchises they are a part of (Short Treks and Kelvinverse).

SO this will be part of canon. As such, my first disappointment is that the crew is mostly human. Sure there is a Caitian, and sure we see a Bolian... and the green girl what is she? An Orion? But given the lower cost of animation, I would REALLY have enjoyed a more mixed crew with less explored species like Anticans, or Xindi, or whatever... Hopefully that will be remedied!

We've seen Napean, Andorian, Vulcan, Trill, Orion, Caitian, Bajoran, Bolian...so far.
Would have been good to have them as part of the main crew. Imagine the possibilities of exploring new cultures - especially in a comedy show!

Bajoran Security Chief, Trill Operations Officer, Caitian CMO, one of the main characters (albeit a Lower Decks) is Orion. The Captain and XO are human, but not much else (we have no idea about the Chief Engineer, for example).
