What games are you playing currently?

P.S. Quick strawpoll though if people would indulge me; what would you say the best two or three PS3 exclusives are (not counting Last of Us)?
I'm eyeing 'Red Dead Redemption' & 'MGS4: Guns of the Patriots' at the moment, but even used they seem a bit on the pricey side... (or maybe I've been spoilt by Steam sale prices)

inFamous 1 and 2
Resistance 2
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

P.P.S. Any opinions on 'Left Behind'? It's like 8 quid on PSN and I can't see something so old on a last gen system going on sale any time soon, so I'm wondering is the DLC worth the price?

Ico/Shadow Of The Colossus Collection and Killzone 2 deserve a mention.

I did think about the Ico/SotC HD set, however I do already own them both on PS2 and for some reason the price of those PS3 HD collections (I also had my eye on the MGS one) seems to have actually gone up over the years! So not a good value proposition IMO. I've also had a look at a few comparison videos and the bump in quality from the PS3 to PS4 version is significant, while the PS2 to PS3 differences appear to be relatively minor. Plus I gather a few of the HD collections they did weren't ported all that well (supposedly the Silent Hill one was a mess since it eliminated fog effects that were a gameplay design element.) It all makes me a bit reticent to spend more than a few quid on one and more inclined to wait and see if they ever appear on the PC platform instead.

As for the likes of Killzone & Resistance: I'm honestly not much for military FPS's, even if they have a sci-fi twist. Plus, as a mostly keyboard and mouse PC gamer, FPS + controller is kind of a non-starter.

On the plus side, while searching around ebay & Amazon I noted that the asking price for the Gamecube's "Twin Snakes" MGS remakes can go up into three figures, and I'm pretty sure I have a second copy knocking around somewhere (accidentally won two ebay auctions about 15 years back.) Selling one of them might finance a little splurge of PS3 titles.

OK, so hypothetically; if you were to recommend only one entry in each of those franchises (on PS3), what would you pick? (anyone else with an opinion, feel free to chime in!)
I'd put in another vote for Uncharted 2 for that series, and Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction for that series. Just a warning though, TOD is part of trilogy and ends on a cliffhanger. It's probably one of their all around best games, with a good story, fun gameplay, and spectacular weapons. One of the biggest highlights of the R&C series is the incredible variety of weapons, which get pretty goofy at times. My favorite weapons in ToD are the Groovitron, which is a discoball you throw that forces the enemies to dance, and the Transmorpher, which turns enemies into penguins.
I have to confess, there is one R&C game I didn't really like and one I didn't play. Both of them move away from the series usual platformer style, which is what I love about the series. I played a little bit of Deadlocked, which was a arena combat game, but I didn't really like the shift away from platforming to focus almost entirely on combat, so I gave up pretty quickly. I didn't even try Full Frontal Assault, because that one is a base/tower defense game, and I don't like those kind of games. That's the kind of thing I'll tolerate as part of a bigger game, but I have no interest in a game that is nothing but that.
I use my PS4 as much if not more for streaming and as a Blu-Ray and DVD player.

For the time being I've settled on MSG4, Uncharted 2, and Red Dead Redemption GOTY (hopefully it's on disc DLC. no way any codes are still valid on a used game.)

I did have a look at Ratchet & Clank and while it seems like a well regarded series, there's so many entries that it seems like a little more of an investment than I'm looking for right now. It doesn't help that even the used prices are a little on the high side. Even the HD collection of the three PS2 titles goes for like £40-£50! That's a little nuts for a set of last gen remasters of titles from two (soon to be three!) generations back.

Wow, that does seem pretty steep for something that old.
Most of the R&C games, other than the Future trilogy, are mostly standalone, so you could pretty much just jump right in to whichever one interests you.

You also can't go wrong with the God of War series. There's a disc with 1 and 2 on it and then of course there's 3. I didn't play any of the PSP games

I did look at GoW and briefly considered adding GoW III to the order....but again the bundle for 1 & 2 was surprisingly pricey. I don't know what it is (maybe the lockdown?) but the PS3 HD remaster collections and platinum bundles seem to be in high demand. Which is weird because in the old days these were the kind of thing you'd get for a few quid in the bargain bin at Game or Smiths or wherever.

I think the pandemic is having an effect on that. I recently went to EBGames to pick something, and while I was hoping to pick up AC Odyssey, they didn't have any copies available, and I ended up getting Spiderman, but it was a lot more expensive than I had thought it was going to be at this point. I guess the game is still very much in demand, and I don't think they're allowed to receive any new used copies at the moment, making prices go up.

I was in the mood for something different this morning, so I started a second play through of Injustice 2.

Ratchet & Clank is one of my absolute favorite franchises, and honestly a big part of why I'm such a Sony diehard. They are just an absolute blast from a gameplay perspective, and they have great characters and stories, especially once you get to the later games. I remember one of the reviews for a later games compared it to a Pixar movie, and I'd definitely agree with that.

For what it's worth I did just download and play through the demo for Weapons of Destruction and honestly, I don't think it's for me. Production values and everything like that are excellent but the gameplay is a little too chaotic for my taste. The rather floaty, unreliable lock-on and occasionally uncooperative camera controls doesn't help matters either.
It kind of reminded me of the Lego Star Wars games in the "shmup wearing the skin of a 3D platformer" vibe, and that didn't do much for me either.

Next I think I'll try the InFamous 2 & Resistance 3 demos and see how they go...

I played the original Lego Star Wars that covered the original trilogy many years back on PC, it was fun for the most part but never did find much repeat value.

Aaaaand 'InFamous 2' is a nope from me too. After playing through the demo, the general impression I'm left with is: Stubbly white guy McBoringface in "Saints Row IV But Taking Itself Seriously."
Hard pass.

Let's see if third time's the charm for 'Resistance 3'....

I found the $99.99US Gold Edition of Assassin's Creed: Origin on the PlayStation Network for only $19.99, and I just couldn't resist that. I almost got the Gold Edition of Odyssey for $24.99 along with it, but I didn't really want to spend that much money. The sale is going on until the 22nd, so I might get Odyssey later. It's downloading right now, and once it's done I'm going to start it.

Resistance 3 was definitely my least favorite of the three. Not to say it's bad, but it was just kinda "meh," especially coming off Resistance 2.

What kind of TV are you playing this on? My TV has HDR and this and Odyssey look absolutely STUNNING with the lighting effects.
Those look like actual screen shots (created directly on the PS4) so the TV doesn't have any effect on the visuals. And the game looks pretty much the same as it did on my PS4 when I played a while back.
