The Stargate Franchise - A First Timer's Watchthrough

Insiders (SG-1)

Well, I found the episode where the Ba'al clones get some kind of payoff and we have a ton of Ba'al puns. That was an ingenious plan to get the ancient planet listings and then Brainwash Barrett to help him. I also laughed at the Ba'al puns, and while he's not Janet Frasier, I really like Dr. Lee. He's a lot of fun. Also loved Vala's plan to identify where the Rings were. I like her bouncing from serious to comical. It's really giving her a range of personality that I find very enduring.

I'm now two episodes away from 200. We've been talking about Farscape and SG-1 today and I think there is even a Farscape reference in that episode. Really excited for it tonight.

Was she called out for it afterwards? Or was it just ignored? I honestly don't remember. She may not be a military officer but like Daniel she is part of a military team.
At the time she wasn't really part of the team, since that was early in season 9 when her and Daniel were linked together and couldn't be separated, thus why she was even at the meeting with the senator to begin with. And considering it was after that meeting that General Landry authorized SG-1 to look into what they believed was a lead on how to break the link between Vala and Daniel, we can assume that took the place of her getting chewed out.
That actually does remind me of something weird. Atlantis generally seemed more "mildly military" than SG-1, to the point where I wondered if they still had their Air Force advisor, with one exception; in real life, when military personnel are out on a mission, they take the identifying patches off their uniforms (the patches are velcroed on, now sewn). They never did that on SG-1, but always do on Atlantis (which is a little funny, because the Atlantis mission patch has a unique shape, so it doesn't really conceal anything), and even did it when we saw SGC personnel in the SGC on Atlantis.
Atlantis never had a military advisor. I remember an interview with SG-1's military advisor around the time Atlantis was beginning where he said Atlantis wouldn't have one because they weren't going to be as "military centric" as SG-1. Which actually makes it ironic that they got the were always properly removing their arm patches while in the field on Atlantis but not on SG-1.
It was definitely a thing done on for that show specifically, since even in the third season of Atlantis when Sheppard gets assigned to one of the SGC's SG teams, he's still not wearing arm patches while in the field.

On an amusing note, Joe Flanagan's hair was actually longer that USAF regulations allow while he was on Atlantis.
I think I might know the reason even though I had never noticed this before. Remember Atlantis is suppose to be a secret and people think it's destroyed. If people for some reason can identify the patch they will know Atlantis is still around. In theory but it depends on many people being familiar with earth people's gear so maybe not.

Jason
Thing is in the fourth season, there's an episode where the characters are recognized by a planet's locals as wearing "Atlantis uniforms" even without the patches.

That's actually what prompted my post, I pulled up that episode since I wondered what SG-team Sheppard was on while I was once again thinking of how "The Return" really should've been a three-parter or even, like, a quarter-season arc (if they'd known SG-1 was going to finally be cancelled that year, I wonder if they might've saved the plot for Atlantis season 4 or 5, when they still had the SGC set and could do an arc as a hybrid show, sort of like what they did on Universe from time to time). If anyone else is wondering, Sheppard is later seen wearing an unteamed SGC patch, but we eventually see one of the guys from his team is wearing the patch for SG-4 (he says he just came from talking with Landry about possibly being transferred to another team, he's probably still wearing the kit for Sheppard's team).

Uninvited (SG-1)

This is one of those episodes where my opinion that filler episodes are a good thing for character development applies. Here the story of the bad looking CGI creature terrorizing a forestry area was just ok, but it was the character work that really made this one good. I loved the scenes with Landry and Mitchell, with Landry telling Mitchell to relax and just the uncomfortable level of that whole thing. I also loved Sam running the SGC, and Vala is humorous as always. It culminated in a wonderful scene with the poker game and Sam bluffing everyone else. We got to see Landry outside of being a general, and I think I'm liking him more and more from mid season 9 to now. He kind of annoyed me at first, but I think he's integrated in with SG-1 pretty well. He's no General Hammond, but it's a nice replacement.

There's a reason why I've been going all of SG-1 so far today and the next episode is it. This is the last episode I was really looking forward to when I started this watchthrough. After 200, I will go back to catch up on Atlantis but I'm glad I will finally get to see "200" today. So excited.

It's a lot more than just a reference.

200 (SG-1)

Well, that was random...

That was weird, stupid, crazy, hilarious, and I loved every minute of it. Man did they spoof so much and it was the perfect sequel to Wormhole X-Treme. Some of the things I loved:

1. The Star Trek bit was spot on. Evidently that was Brad Wright who played Scotty. I thought it was Paul McGillion. I think it should have been McGillion. I mean he's just across the hall.

2. I asked the question last night about where are the Nox throughout this whole thing with the Ori, and the very first scene in 200 we got the Furlings in the Star Wars Spoof. I couldn't believe they actually went to the Ewok movies for that but it worked really really well.

3. The Farscape spoof was a little too quick but it was basically using all the swear words of that show. They pretty much nailed Farscape here and I was cracking up throughout.

4. I know it's pretty cliche to have a big budget explosion in a sci fi series at this point, but lovely effects on blowing up Cheyenne Mountain, from the pan out to the actual explosion

5. I enjoyed the Team America segment, but I think it might have gone on too long. Still, the look of it was pretty spot on.

6. Invincible Jack was hysterical. Loved his scene with Teal'c and Teal'c comments about his transparency.

7. The stuff with the younger cast and making it look like a UPN show, I saw Cory Montieth and I was expecting them to burst into Song.

8. Instead of Zombies, I think they should have gone with Vampires and just spoofed Buffy. Oh well. Zombies was pretty big in 2006.

9. They really got a lot of milage on the fishing gag. It worked every time.

This was just so much fun. They really poked fun at themselves and at Sci Fi for showing low budget bad movies. I do have a few criticisms though. I didn't really like how they were interviewing the cast of W-Xtreme to close out the episode. When we got our crew to go through the gate, I actually wanted to see that scene all the way. I mean Jack came back, and I think this was Walter's first time through the gate. I started to get a little emotional and then they pulled a fast one and took me out of the scene.

Other than that, 200 episodes is quite an accomplishment and I was thinking how much time I've devoted to this series during this lockdown period. I started this 8 weeks ago, and I'm 200 episodes into SG-1 and 42 episodes into Atlantis. I have too much time on my hands, but it's been a hell of a ride.

It was gonna be! And then it wasn't. I don't think anyone has ever said why.

I've never seen Farscape (it's on the list!), but the camera flying in to Thor with a Fu Manchu just saying "Yotz!" always kills me.

I think 200 was made before Team America, so they were both joking about the Gerry Anderson puppet sci-fi shows.

If this Lockdown goes on for a long time that might be a good idea. I am trying to get the entire house renovated though, and the landscaping isn't the best.

Well at the rate you are watching Stargate, you will be done within a week.

San Jose you can do a bunch of great fruit trees. Or cannabis. I got deleted in a Victory Garden forum when joking about weed. People are crazy.

Irresistible (SG: A)

I think this was supposed to be funny, but I didn't laugh one time. Maybe I should have waited to see it after watching 200, but I wouldn't have known. I just found the idea of a guy making everyone like him because of a drug and his advancements towards women just not my style. I think the only part I liked was the discussion on the intergalactic bridge to go from Atlantis to Earth and back without having to power up the ZPM or rely on the Deadelus.

I remember this episode because I loved what's his name, but yeah. This just continued my disconnect from Stargate. SG-1's cancelation was announced the same day they wrapped 200 or were having a party for the 200th episode.

But the bridge thing still shows they have some decent ideas.

Sateda (SG: A)

Holy smokes that episode was SPECTACULAR. Basically, it's 35 minutes of Ronon kicking Wraith ass back on his home planet while we get some massive, and long overdue, character development. We also see Jason Momoa act the most he's acted since coming onto the show early in Season 2. Everything about that episode was awesome. Also, we got a wonderful scene with John and Teyla, with Teyla finishing John's sentences admitting that the Atlantis team is the closest thing he's ever had to a family. Honestly, this might be in my top 5 favorite episodes of this series? I like the finale and premiere episode, but this episode got me pumped up to be watching Stargate Atlantis. Also, this was a lot funnier than Irresistible, thanks in large part of McKay and Carson. If Pegasus Project and 200 got me hyped for SG-1, this episode got me hyped for SG: Atlantis. That episode was amazing in every way.
