TAS made real....

I do like it a lot but it's missing stuff, I know that's the point and it is not supposed to be the hero ship or the like but maybe some viewports and a bit of navigation lights / colours here and there to spiff it up would help?

I thought about that—thats why I added the impulse engine glow—but I doubt they would have added even that detail let alone windows and running lights. The Klingon Battle Cruiser was more detailed and it had no lights (as far as I know). Blacked out windows could be added.

I kinda agree with @Warped9, when you look at the one-off ship models they had on the original series, they mostly seem rather plain and featureless. Like for example the Tholian webspinner/Aurora, the Melkotian buoy or the Eymorg ship. So I think they would have done it in a similar fashion had they built that particular TAS ship for real.

A lot of detail can be invisible as seen from a distance. Thats why the detailing of some of TOS’ miniatures is impressive. For these TAS miniatures I am trying to lean toward a bit more detailing without going too far. Today cgi allows you do most anything, but adding lights to a physical model would have been an added cost and time consuming effort for TOS that they would have weighed heavily. Note, too, that in “Time Trap” this ship was supposed to be powered down (as I can best remember). I did put subtle detailing on the upper surface of the pods on the rollbar, but they show up only under certain lighting. I am still weighing certain details.

As you said, similar ships show up in both The Time Trap and The Jihad. When the ship was used again in The Jihad, its coloring was red with a few other mods. The Time Trap ship would be many decades if not centuries older which may attribute to its changed appearance. Are the markings "NCC"?

I really get your point, guess it's just my interest in that ship, it is weirdly nice, I quite like it. :D

I love it. Now, who wants to speculate about what such a ship would be for?

Some type of specialized survey ship?

Maybe all of the pods contain sensor packages that have to be held away from the warp nacelles...?
I agree. I do not believe however, that it is not a Starfleet ship, but possibly an indigenous vessel of a Federation world

The three things that came to my mind:

- an older Romulan vessel.
- an Orion vessel
- a Skorr vessel (given we see this ship reappear in “Jihad.”)

The last possibility has the most weight I think although it could have also belonged to Sord, Em-three-green or Lara’s people seen in “Jihad” even though we didn’t see them in “Time Trap” to the best of my recollection.

That's my vote: Lara's ship which is an older Federation design. As for not seeing any of the Jihad races on the 12 member council in Time Trap; they represented 123 species, so there are another 111 species not seen in Time Trap.

Part of the issue with this is we have no sense of scale. It could be a massive vessel so that access to the pods up through the truly tall pylons is not an issue. Or it could be a relatively small ship only a few decks thick and the pods are not meant to be accessed from the main section. Just as the alien pod ship from "Beyond The Farthest Star" made no sense from a human perspective neither does this design from "Time Trap."

...an older Federation design.
You know the more I ponder this the more I'm thinking something kinda sorta like this could have been used for the NX-01. Not exactly, of course, but this could have served as a jumping off point conceptually.

Hmm...something to contemplate as a future conceptual design to flesh out and model someday... Maybe something that could have come in around the tail end of the Earth/Romulan War, perhaps even roughly similar enough that the Romulans could have emulated it to a degree and eventually came up with the later familiar TOS Romulan Warbird as seen in "Balance Of Terror."

In the meantime. I think I've taken this as far as I am comfortable with for now although I still might play with the colour some later. Before I can recreate some of the scenes from "Time Trap" I need to go on to the next model from that episode.

The only refinement left is to color the front curved panels of the five top pods a darker grey. Otherwise, the ship looks great. :techman:
