The new UESPA Series of books thread

Even though there are no ships on the cover—the Bread and Circuses cover is my favorite—a true science fiction cover.

Thanks! That's one of the rare instances where I think I got the person to look okay. In all the others, they look janky due to my trying to get a "painted" look with Photoshop filters and getting the best I was able to at that time. I've had a tablet for a couple years now, and as I realized the 20th anniversary was coming up, I realized I could ideally try to redo those covers. My first few attempts has not yielded the results I wanted i.e. stylistic accuracy for the times. That's why I've got so many ship covers. LOL!

I'm still not seeing the Photobucket watermark on my images in the old thread. Is anyone else seeing them? Photobucket has been sending me e-mails to unlock my account (they want me to pay for what was previously free) and I've ignored those e-mails to the point that I thought it had finally shut down the account. Recently, to my surprise, I received a few of those e-mails again, which I promptly ignored. I created this new thread because of those watermarks and I figured I could post the covers in the current chronological order. I don't know if this is some temporary thing to get me back to Photobucket or what.

At the moment, my account also doesn't have them.

Yeah, could be. As far as my lack of interesting in returning to my account, they did it to themselves.

Okay, thanks! The main reason I created this new thread was because of that and I figured it'd be easier than trying to replace the images in the old one.

I have the same lack of interest as well and yeah, they sure did do it to themselves.

As it turns out—there were similar types of art in bubble-gum cards..in terms of ships:

That lacked fidelity and purposely took liberties to the extremes of, say, the covers of The Omega Glory and Charlie X, shown on the previous page?

Nope. Not even remotely. Not that example.

Sorry it's been awhile, I see that my pics in the old thread are, amazingly enough still not showing the watermarks which is frankly baffling. I'll continue with this new thread as who knows when they'll put them back on. I've been piddling around with more "traditional" art as there's several covers that I've never liked and with Procreate I can digitally paint them. At least that's the goal. So far I suck at the painting and cannot seem to capture the more pulpy style of covers featuring people in that era. Those are the covers that bother me the most and which is why so many of them feature ship shots.

Also had to find my notes and The UESPA Guidebook, which I did find, but I don't recall if it was the final version. There are several stories that can be linked together and I don't think I caught that element originally which means I'd have to re-order some of them (ugh). I swear as I get older, everything takes longer and feels like "two weeks ago". This thread a perfect example lol.

This one below is how I planned to get around making 79 covers. The idea was originally just to do the covers for the episodes where I thought I could pull something off reasonably well, maybe 20 or 30. The rest of the episodes would be in anthology editions like this one. Looks like this edition is obsolete and will need to be reworked.

A Ron Tracy Adventure!

By this time Roddenberry had grown largely tired of writing the series, but it had proven so popular that ACE, with Roddenberry's approval, contracted other writers to write new tales of the UESPA. The series "Golden Age" was only just beginning.

This cover is the one that I tried to "paint" as I really am not a fan of it. Somehow I got this original one passable enough for me to post, but still, not a fan of it. I like the design elements of the ACE covers, although I need to shorten that back text if I can find the base files.

That's enough for now. Back to experimenting.

I love all the effort you've put into these - not only the design, but the weathering. The font choice, the layout, even the colophons - I could easily see these on the bookshelves of a used bookstore while browsing for deals. Nicely done!

Thank you! :) I do love working on and adding all that stuff! I find that I cannot simply do the front cover either. Like, I want to know what this "book" would've been like to see in real life, so I do the whole thing. I enjoy coming up with the back blurbs to see if I can describe an old episode in an interesting way, though some of my older ones are quite wordy.

The box art of the original AMT Romulan Bird of Prey also depicts a small TOS Enterprise that evoked the disk-shooting DINKY (scroll down):

-but the nacelle struts a swept back just a tad…that might be something you could emulate.

I wonder if the artist got wind of Matt’s pre-TMP ideas of swept nacelle supports.

Even as a kid out in the middle of nowhere, I did similar drawings—that and adding layers to the saucer top.

I remember that I didn’t want the nacelle pylons to have quite the same angle as the neck—jarring somehow.

The neck I would lean forward—but the “wings” I kept a tad straighter.
