The Stargate Franchise - A First Timer's Watchthrough

Prometheus & Unnatural Selection

That didn't need to be a two part episode. I think of all the two part episodes I've seen, this might have been the weakest, but I'm not sure if that is a bad thing. I liked Unnatural Selection more than Prometheus though. Prometheus felt like a shoddily edited episode with a number of convienient events leading to the plot of the second episode. So Earth has this space ship that we really haven't gotten any hints of in the last several episodes and you would think something as highly advanced as this would have security around it like Fort Knox or something. The scene where Jack was pissed off basically spotlighted my issues with this episode. You guard this ship like your life depends on it, and anyone you let it you basically screen about 5 times or so. It just felt like the plan was too easy. Then it leads to a closure of the Simmons/Goa'uld story and I can't help but wonder why they felt the need to bring this storyline back. It was basically to get the ship in the air and that was it. It was as if the writers were like we have these threads and we need to get this ship into space. Lets combine the two and see what happens. Honestly I think this episode would have been better if they had taken maybe the first half hour of the 44 minutes to reveal this ship to the audience, explain why it's here and then end it the same way, or let Thor come down to earth as just ask for help.

Unnatural Selection was much more interesting, and yes I did go back and read @bigdaddy's spoiler after I watched it. I think the next logical step for the replicators is to evolve to take human form, or else you get into the situation where Voyager was in with the Borg. I mean when the episode started I was like, "Are they just going to repeat the same story from Small Victories?" As the episode went, they really didn't and they combined the story of Reese to bring a logical continuation of this story. Even though they are now frozen in time, I think this brings some interesting and new possibilities to the whole Replicator thing and I'm excited to see where it goes. I also loved the Enterprise scene with Jack and Sam. In fact, in both these episodes, Jack was the highlight, but then again, I've said many times how much I love RDA and everything he says and does that that is no surprise.

Overall, Prometheus was not the worst episode of the season, but I was wondering why they went into that direction. Unnatural Selection opens the door for some interesting things in the future of the series and was a little better but this as a two parter was probably the weakest two parter I've seen so far that wasn't a season finale/premiere (Even though I did like Into the Fire so all the finale/premiere two parters have been decent to great).

The human form replicators are a big part of Season 8.

Personally, I like Unnatural Selection because of the themes of what it means to be human and also what they do with Fifth in the episode. I like that line at the end, "we used his humanity against him!"

As noted above, I liked US but found "Prometheus" disappointing. I thought US gave Jonas some good stuff to work with as well. I think he did a good job of filling in for Daniel as the conscience of the team.

I liked that he was the one who asked Jack if he did the right thing in freezing the Replicators. Heck, I'm halfway through the season now and Jonas has been better than I thought he was going to be.

It must of been a blink and you miss it brief reference. I know they were doing the 302 but it just felt like this big ship was dropped out of the blue.
Yeah. Near the end of the episode Hammond mentions they have to give the Russians the plans to the X-302 and the X-303. The Prometheus is the X-303.

I just checked and you're right. It was a very quick mention but it was there. I was have appreciated another mention though, maybe in the episode where they procured the gliders.

I think at this point I'd seen Nemec in Parker Lewis Can't Lose and The Stand. He was good enough in the latter, but the former certainly wasn't a confidence-booster.

He's in the recent Star Wars video game, Fallen Order, and I'm entirely sure that the casting process was the writers going, "For the lost Jedi Master, we want a wise, grandpa-badass in the tradition of Obi-Wan in ANH. Like Master Bra'tac, from Stargate" "Well, can't we just hire Master Bra'tac from Stargate?" "I don't see why not."
I saw at least a couple people call his character Jedi Master Bra'tac after the game came out. It was even my first thought once they introduced the character.
Just as a fun little FYI, he also played Geppeto in Once Upon A Time.

Sight Unseen

Decent episode. Nothing special but I did like Vernon and his scene at the end with Jack. Also, the alien creatures looks like something out of Alice in Wonderland. Also, what is it with Jack and Fishing. He sure loves to do that in his off time. I was also thinking about Jonas and what he does for R & R. They say he's not allowed to leave the base, so I'm assuming the base has living quarters. I know this show doesn't really do much in terms of the personal lives of the crew, but I do enjoy those episodes where they have other lives other than their classified ones.

For context with "PROMETHEUS" and "UNNATURAL SELECTION"...

When they originally aired, as well as each of the exactly halfway point episodes from now until the end of the series (11th episode for season 6 and 7, 10th for the rest), it was a midseason break for several months. Very much how THE WALKING DEAD has been doing for most of its run.

I'm thinking in this case, they needed something to start off the ship, and create a cliffhanger at the end, which is why it seems like they are completely different episodes.

I will tell you it's the weakest two-parter midseason break of the series. And it's still not a bad pair, just the first part meandered a bit too much, so the others I'm sure you'll enjoy even more.

I th8nk given how much action Jack sees, plus all he's gone through over the years, he truly appreciates quiet time like fishing.

I personally don't like fishing... too boring for me... but I can understand why so many people love it.

Watching Farscape and then BSG, I always hated the Sci Fi Midseason break that was like 3 months long. I think for BSG's 3rd and 4th seasons, we were waiting close to a year. I know there was a writers strike during that time, but that only happened once.

1. Season 2 finale is still the weakest two parter.
2. This is exactly what I was hinting at, and my problem with the later seasons. It was what 3ish years ago that Jack and Tealc were stuck in a tiny little space fighter thing. Next thing you know there is this massive ship? At the very least they could have hinted at it a few times randomly in a couple episodes.
3. Fort Knox is where the government hides the alien bodies, they son't have room for a spaceship. ;)

Smoke and Mirrors

Kinsey really is someone you love to hate. You're glad Jack didn't actually kill him (Nice call back to Foothold by the way, something this show does pretty well in terms of following up on past events) but then you see Jack and the Senator at the end and Kinsey says "you probably just won me the election", I was hoping Jack would deck him right there. Jack was basically used in this episode and while it's good they brought the committee down, the Senator is so much worse. While I don't entirely like the NID, I do like this Jack and Kinsey thing they have going on. This series needs villains and Kinsey is one of the better ones. Other things I liked about this episode: Agent Barrett and Carter working together and the Teal'c interrogation by just looking at the guy was hilarious.

Paradise Lost

Another fun episode, this time featuring the great duo and Jack O'Neill and Harry Maybourne. I've really enjoyed this pair over the last few seasons and this episode was fun and a little creepy. Just seeing a paradise environment be a ghost town and then Harry being all delusional was a bit unnerving, but in the end it all worked for me. I'm also glad Maybourne gets a somewhat happy ending, at least in this episode. He might have lead the Rouge NID to get alien technology, but his last few appearances have redeemed him to an extent.

Sci Fi really started getting carried away with their midseason breaks during the 2006-2007 season, still a year or two away from the Writer's Strike, and was IIRC part of their brilliant plan to fix shit which wasn't broken and in the process breaking it. This was when SG-1 and Atlantis were in their tenth and third seasons, respectively, and there was a six month break in the middle of the season, longer than the gaps between seasons. What really hurt them was that everywhere else in the world either didn't bother with a midseason break for the Stargate shows, or had a significantly shorter one. Meaning the second half of those seasons aired in the winter/spring everywhere else, and the seasons were done by March 2007. Sci Fi didn't even begin the second half of the seasons until April 2007.

I think this is very true especially when you consider his pond doesn't even have fish in it. Well sort of but that's another story for the future!

Paradise Lost is a weird episode. If the paradise was just the moon, why did the gu'ald need to send some bitter herbs over to destroy it? Why not just go to the moon?
