Should Picard be the last major show to take place in that time period?

Should the next big exploration focused show (TOS/TNG/VOY/ENT) take place a century+ after Picard?

Look, I know that there are always more stories to tell in any given time period in Trek, but I personally believe that Picard should be the last major show set in that time period and if they do another big exploration show in the vein of TOS/TNG/VOY/ENT it should be set in the 2460s to give it breathing room.

What does everyone else think?

I understand where you’re coming from but I’ve gotta level — the 24th century is “my” Trek. It is the Trek of my people. (And by that, I mean that it is what I grew up on.) My biggest television wish ever since Voyager’s finale was for a successor show of sorts and I finally got that through Picard. And I’m very happy about that, but it’s made me yearn even more to see a few more faces from my childhood. Garak, The Doctor, Worf, Kira, Ezri, and more. (I would say Odo, but... RIP.) I’d love to see them playing off of newer characters, too, like Picard’s crew.

I realize that in a sense I’m being rather selfish. And potentially constraining the writers in a real way. But damn it, I want it!

I think that the time jump between NEM and PIC can actually serve as a nice bridge between old and new - where you can use established characters like Picard, Seven, Riker and Troi to lay a foundation for a new era of series that also introduce new characters like Jurati, Raffi, Rios, etc. Give PIC another season or two to further flesh out this time period (enough seems to have changed in 20 years) and then another spin-off or series could easily take over and introduce even more new characters.

Meanwhile, you've now got Discovery sailing off to uncharted territory in Season 3 - that's another opportunity to do some world building and establish a completely new status quo in the distant future that can also serve as a jumping-off point for new series.

Then there's the rumored Pike-centric spin-off that may be coming, and Section 31 which will allegedly take place in the DSC season 2 timeframe.

We may be at the point where we're exploring Trek in multiple time periods simultaneously - and so long as it's all handled with care and proper attention then I'm okay with that.

Time periods are irrelevant.
:borg:
It's the characters and situations in each show that matters.
:)

All that being said, Star Trek really isn't stuck in one specific era anymore, so I'd think it'd be interesting after PIC ends that another series continues from there while other shows push forward their respective eras. By then it'll be the dawn of the 25th-Century for that series anyway, IMO...

Absolutely not, it is far more interesting to me than the insistence they keep going back to the TOS era, which was another factor that killed DIscovery for me.

Totally agree with this, they should be moving forward.

I would, however, welcome something that fits betwen the prologue of Generations and The Next Generation - there are 70 years to explore--adjustment to peace with the Klingon Empire; the destruction of the Enterprsie C; the early days of TNG era folk; old Sulu; many major events etc

Plenty to explore but keep it fresh

All that matters is that showrunners are free to explore unusual ideas without being bound to the Obvious Show principle that a lot of fans espouse for whatever reason, as if Star Trek must for some reason expand into interconnected spinoffs in any given production era.

Why can't we take Star Trek one series at a time? To distance TNG from the original, it jumped nearly a century into the future. DS9 and Voyager rode on the success of TNG, so they took place in the same time period. Enterprise jumped 200 years back in time to be a prequel, because Berman and Braga didn't want to move forward. They wanted to do a show closer to the present day, not further into the future. Next up, Discovery, it's right before the original show, probably to help capitalize on the success of the JJ Abrams movies for also being in the Kirk era. Now we have Picard, a return to 1990's Star Trek, showing us what happened to various characters and worlds after Nemesis. Why do we have to have rules on where the franchise should go? Why can't the next series be left up to that show's producers???

I always thought it was a mistake to jump so far forward with TNG. I had hoped when I first heard that it would be called "The Next Generation" that it was the actual next generation, not 4 generations in the future. They introduced enough characters to spin them off. But Decker and Ilia were immed gotten rid of, and Saavik turned into a long, slow fart. Went nowhere.

In any case, I would rather not another huge jump.

I agree that TNG was a bit too far in the future, to the point where there was a 70 year gap of time between the last time we saw the TOS era and the TNG era in which relatively little happened. Speaking of which, that gap of time would have been the perfect setting for a new show precisely because it's such a blank slate.

But off the top of my head we have a pretty good idea what 2293, 2327, 2344 and 2355 look like, all of which would have to be squinted together with a discofied new project set in those decades. Okuda’s blue-green console style… with popup holograms? Kelvinized warp effects?

2293 - opening scene of Star Trek: Generations.
2327 - the flashback scenes from "Tapestry."
2344 - Enterprise-C is destroyed.
2355 - The Battle of Maxia.

That's four instances in 70 years. Other than the apparently everlasting monster maroon uniform, there's no common thread linking these seven decades together. So it's still a relatively clean slate.

As for VFX? We're never going back to what the FX looked like during the TOS films and TNG. That's just not happening. The same exact warp-in-warp-out FX are being used in DSC and PIC which is 150 years after the former. So any show taking place in, say, 2330, will have the exact same VFX as a show that takes place in 2255 or a show that takes place in 2399.
