JD's Comic Book Thread

Gary Frank absolutely makes his Superman look like Reeve and I've always loved that.

Secret Origins was great, you should track down the other Superman story he and Johns did, "Braniac", very much worth it.

Not only did Frank draw Superman like Chris Reeve, he also draws Lois like Margot Kidder (but with black hair). It's not as noticable, but there are panels where it really shows. Like this one:

I've just learned that Nicola Cuti has passed away. I've been following his work in the Warren Horror tribute mag "The Creeps", which I highly recommend, and I'm deeply saddened by this loss. He's been a writer for Charlton and Warren in the 60s, and he was both a writer and editor for "The Creeps". Kinda worried for the future of that mag.

Just got the bug again after a protracted Marvel burnout caused by War Of The Realms.

Caught up on a few of the main non mutant titles so far. Marvel aren't exactly killing it at the moment.

I didn't notice that, but I've seen a lot more pictures and stuff of Reeve, while I only saw Kidder when I watched the first two Superman movies ages ago, so she's not as recongizeable for me.

So a big question for me about the most recent x-men comics is:

who is the top and who is the bottom with Scott and Logan? Or is Jean the top for both of them?

I haven't looked back a lot on this thread, but i want to point out if anyone is worried about the Xmens current...'personalities'...I'm not sure if this iteration is the one we're familiar with. ALSO...this iteration will only last as long as the girl in the plant basement will.

Oddly I'm enjoying Thor and Daredevil mostly. Odd, as I'm not that fond of either character.

Just waded through Avengers No Road Home, which was at best a real bind (although I like the look of new Herc). Now trying to slog through the recent Avengers Ghost Rider stuff and get up to date, and wondering if it's really worth the effort.

I've been surprised how hard it has been to force myself to read the Avengers even though Jason Aaron is writing it. I'm not enjoying it nearly as much as I did his Thor run. And speaking of Thor, I was prepared to dislike the new direction based on the new character design, but so far it's really grabbed me.

I've just caught up on Avengers and it's not all as bad as the Ghostrider arc. It's not good though.

Glutton for punishment that I am, I've started Savage Avengers. I'm struggling to accept Conan in the Marvel universe but it's not "that" bad...

Think I'll catch up on Hulk next and then move onto the stuff I've been saving - I'd already started Hickman's House and Powers and loved them. I'll finish them off and then investigate the relaunched mutant titles.

Wish me luck...

I started a re-read of Airboy from Eclipse Comics a few weeks ago and noticed how good the colouring looked even though it was just on newsprint. There were a lot of subtle colour variations that I wouldn't have thought possible for newsprint at the time it was printed (mid-80s). I took a look at the credits and it turns out Olyoptics did the colours, who would later go on to play an instrumental part in the digital colour revolution. I thought it was a neat bit of comic book history.

I just learned that the French series of unlicenced Conan adaptations (because there are a few REH stories are in the public domain now) have begun being published in the US by the publisher ABLAZE. They go by "Cimmerian" instead of "Conan", as that would go against trademark.

The first mini-series (two-parters breaking apart the original French GNs) is "Queen of the Black Coast" and the first issue is apparently already out. Also has some sweet variant covers, so even though I already have the German editions, I'll pick up the ones with cool covers. "Red Nails" is already solicited.

I highly recommend those. They are adaptations of the original Robert E. Howard stories by different writers and artists from Europe, definitely for mature readers.
Especially I suggest you look out for "The Frost-Giant's Daughter", which has already been published in German, and let me tell you, it's one of the best Conan comics ever. The writer/artist Robin Recht went even further than Howard, showing more realistic behaviour in regards to violence and sexuality, expands on the story to also include the background of Ymir, the Frost-Giant, and his creation myth, and not least, the art is simply stunning.

Here in Las Vegas all non-essential businesses are shut down. Several of the local comic shops are offering curbside service. You order and pay for books via phone or online and drive to the store. They run the books out to the car for you.

To accommodate comic book stores during the Coronavirus outbreak, Diamond Comic Distributors has turned Free Comic Book Day into Free Comic Book May.
Well, that didn't hold long.

Free Comic Book Day 2020 Postponed by Diamond Due to Coronavirus

CBR said:
"The severity and timing of the impact of the COVID-19 virus can’t be predicted with any certainty, but the safety of our retailer partners and comic book fans is too important to risk," Diamond CEO Steve Geppi said in a statement. "As always, we appreciate your enthusiasm for and support of the comic industry’s best event and look forward to celebrating with you later in the Summer."

That leaves some distributors in a pickle, who usually use their Free Comic Book Day issues to promote and, more importantly, tie-in with upcoming events. DC's "Generation Zero", which was to set up the Generations event, comes to mind.

Since a lot of Comic Conventions have been cancelled or postponed (and doubtlessly more will be), some Dutch artists are organizing an online Stay Home Comic Con to be held next weekend, March 28-29. You can register for "free tickets", already 200 "artist tables" are booked, and you can join a cosplay contest.

I've been reading the first collection of the Whedon/Cassaday run on Astonishing X-Men and I was wonder if there are any other series I should read alongside it? I know the X-Men series tend to have a lot of back and forth between different series, so I was just curious if there are anything I need to read with it to get the full picture.
