More than that, I was very struck by the fact that the writing has Picard very much fall into the old habit of referring to Will as “Commander Riker,” which is a little odd, given that Jean-Luc should have been well aware that Riker was (finally!) appointed to his own independent command as a Captain and, presumably, held that or subsequent appointments for quite some time, potentially over a dozen years or more after the events of Nemesis.
It's simply the truth. Commander Riker served with him on the Enterprise. Captain Riker didn't.To be fair, you could refer to Picard as a captain as commanding officer of a vessel, which could be done at any rank.
That said, I don't know why Picard calling Riker "commander" needs any explanation. It could just be a production screw-up, not some in-universe slight.
Sisko also did that with Jake, and it stood out as something that should be normal in real life.On another note, I'd like to acknowledge the sweet brotherly kiss that Picard and Riker exchanged. It is refreshing to see two hetero men not afraid to show affection in that way. I (a hetero male) still give my father and adult brother a peck, and I kiss my son (and intend to continue into his adulthood). I find it sad that a lot of men cannot show affection in that way.
I really enjoy these references. There’s another TAS reference in the episode, a stuffed Glommer toy.

Well, Riker did think he was cooking for three and then was suddenly cooking for five.Riker was being awful stingy with the pizza.
I mean, come on. Guests get ONE PIECE each? And those pieces were not large. Hell, the entire pizza was not that much bigger than one slice like you'd get in NYC or Chicago....
Really disappointed Hugh died.
For a second, I thought he and the Romulan kid/swordsman we’re going to do a really cool team up.
I actually thought Hugh was more interesting in PIC than in “I, Borg” and loved the performance. So I liked him and found him more interesting than any of the new characters.
