Spielberg won't do Indy 5

I’ve always thought that they got less good as they went along. I’m in the minority that thinks TOD is better than TLC (the music is better, it’s less of a rehash of Raiders, the stunts are better and it’s not played for laughs so much). I love the character and concept of Indy but for my money the first movie is the only out and out classic in the bunch.

No.

Raiders is vastly eclipsed by all 3 of its successor films, with Crystal Skull and Temple of Doom at the top.

The idea that Raiders is automatically "everyone's favorite Indy film"
No one has said that.

But Raiders is indeed objectively the best film of the bunch, by far. The late Gene Siskel liked to say, "There is a point in which opinion shades into error of fact", and while you're welcome to prefer Skull to Raiders, you're quite simply wrong to say it's superior. What's more, you don't get to cry about art being subjective when you yourself used non-personal, declarative language.

No.

I know from personal experience that plenty of people believe that the subsequent Indy films (at least Temple of Doom and Last Crusade) are objectively better films than Raiders.

If someone wants to make the case that the three followup films to Raiders - Temple, Last Crusade, and Crystal Skull - are superior to Raiders in their Direction, Writing, Cinematography, Editing, Acting, Music, and Sound, I'm all ears.

And I'm not saying those people you know aren't lovely people, but, as you can see, this board is composed of a more discerning crowd when it comes to film criticism. ;)

For example, here's a 40-minute exploration of the cinematic subtleties and hidden depths in Raiders' opening sequence alone:

What I would do is a movie or tv show about Indiana Jones dad. This would make it easier to bring in a new director because it wouldn't have Indy in it thus allowing for maybe a different kind of tone while still capturing elements that are fun with all the movies. Also it allows you to go to the past where these kind of adventures play better than they would in a 50's or 60's setting. I also wouldn't mind seeing Indy's mom as well.

Sean Connery also leaves pretty big boots to fill.

Eh. It’s been done before.
Get Daniel Craig to do it.

My mind would be blown next time I see Cowboys and Aliens.

Though I’ve been joking for years, ever since Connery retired and Nic Cage started doing the filmic equivalent of masturbating tramps for dollar bills that they should do a sequel to The Rock with George Lazenby as John Mason.

Raiders of The Lost Ark is a goddamn classic, and like Back To The Future, damn near a perfect film.
Every Indy film made afterwards could go in the can and nothing of value would be lost. Same goes for Back To The Future 2 & 3. All the sequels are, at best, mediocre.

As for rebooting Indiana Jones. Sure. Timeless characters get rebooted for new generations, the ones that don't are forgotten. Tomorrows film viewers won't give a shit about the films of today, like most of today's film viewers don't give a shit about the films of yesterday.

I would go with Clive Owen myself when picking someone to replace Connory as Indy's dad.

Yeah, no. One of the worst things they brought to the films was Indy's dad and the lame revelation about his name. It'd be like finding out Northwest Smith's real name is Gary. I don't need to know anything about the guy other than that he's a professor and archeologist who goes on adventures.

That would be asinine. Did you miss the entire point of Henry Jones Sr.'s characterization in Last Crusade, that he's bookish and has no taste or skill for fighting? That, even though Indy has a doctorate, he regards him as a bit of a punk for all the scrapes he's always getting himself into?

If one is going to milk the franchise until it's desscicated and decomposed, at least do so with the correct character. But to completely rewrite Sr.'s character, thus effectively creating a new character just so the franchise stays in the family is Hollywood thinking at its tackiest.

He doesn't have to get into scrapes himself. Just be around others who do the fighting. Someone who accidently finds adventure instead of going out and doing things he knows is dangerous and will require action. He can always be talking about being cautious while maybe his partner is more of the wild devil may care one.
