I think the E we got is closer to the Phase II than anything, and I loved the Phase II design since I first saw the comic book ad in 1979.
Obviously the DSC version is a little closer to TOS and the true Phase II is closer to TMP. The Phase II below reminds me of some of the odd looking ships we saw on novel covers in the 70's (lots of greeblies). I can't remember the series names for those novels right now.

The pylons and lighter color make all the difference in the world. I could squint and see this as a predecessor to the TOS 1701. I hope Eaglemoss will give us this version somewhere down the road.

Whee! I'm interested in dorsal shots: I'd like to count the saucertop doodads, phasers, hatches, whatnot.

Doesn't mean another approach is better or more wanted. I'm someone that would've preferred they left the Enterprise alone. I look at the two versions, and one actually reminds me of the ship during that time period. Eaves gave us something that was evocative of that ship, without being a direct copy. The production staff took it and turned it into the refit, because that is the one that people talk about more on social media.
I mean, if you're trying to sell fans on this being the TOS time period, then, to me, the smart play is to make the hero ship, the one fandom has grown up with and hangs now in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, as relatively close to the original as possible. I can quibble with certain decisions Eaves made with his version, at the same time I can see that he was actually working from the silhouette of the original, changing details to a certain degree.

Well...yeah. But that's another line of discussion altogether. 
Of course. I certainly would not have done it that way either. But, I'll not begrudge their efforts even if I disagree with them.
