Would Riker get away with calling Picard "JL"?

Having Raffi called Picard 'JL' is like seeing a millennial-age junior staff calling their superiors their nicknames or first name, which I assume is fine in some work settings but is clearly not acceptable in organizations with strong top-down hierarchy like the military, or even at universities. In my old grad school all PhD students call their thesis advisor 'Professor Picard' or 'Dr Picard.' Once you have defended your dissertation (thereby earning the right to be called a 'Dr' yourself), you may call your advisor 'Jean-Luc,' but in all cases you never call him 'JL.'

I can't speak to the military or academia, but things are a lot more informal in the publishing industry. Not sure I have ever referred to my bosses as "Mr. Doherty" or "Ms. Dawson" or whatever, and I still find it weird to be addressed as "Mr. Cox," not this happens very much anymore.

Indeed, if anything, things seem to be trending toward ever more informality in the workplace. I routinely receive business communications from total strangers that address me by my first name and take very informal tone:

"Hi, Greg! I'm Susan Blake, an editor at Citrine Press, and I'd like to talk to you about a possible book project."

I'm just old enough to remember when this would have been considered odd. :)

Complaining about nicknames, are we?

Seriously.

In over thirty years, Picard has never thrown a fit about the mispronunciation of his surname. Perhaps he's actually quite chill?

Oh no, there are considerable variances, even within a discussion about a fictitious show, that should be considered.

This qualifies as pretty low.
Yeah, it pretty much starts out with a nonstarter that Riker could never "get away with it." Ok, but Raffi isn't Riker. It aren't that hard...

I'm thinkin' that Commander Riker probably wouldn't even try.
When we first meet him at Farpoint Station, he's pretty much the ideal Star Fleet Officer.

Raffi on the other hand, when she first met Jean-Luc was apparently already on Star Fleet's chit-list.

Probably not. If you haven't noticed the Women of Color in Picard's life seem to bring a sense of sensibility to Picard's mind. Especially after his stint as Locutus, no woman other than a Woman of Color seem to bring Picard back to his senses/.

I get what your trying to say, but there just seems to be something innately wrong with the way you said it.
:wtf:

Count me as completely fucking confused. I don't remember any women of color in Picard's life?

I'm thinking it was used to indicate that folks like Guinan, Lily Sloane and Raffi were/are important people in Jean-Luc's life.
But I think I would have just listed them rather than going with a political grouping term.

It sounds logical. The question is: how long does Picard and Raffi known each other? As I stated earlier Picard and Beverly Crusher have known each other for twenty-plus years prior to TNG, and as the only person abroad the Enterprise-D who had known Picard since his Stargazer years, it was fine for Beverly to call him 'Jean-Luc.'

There was only six years between the events of 'Nemesis' and the Mars attack/the cancellation of the Romulan rescue mission (2379 to 2385). Raffi was likely Picard's XO for two to three years since Picard was assigned into the Romulan rescue mission. If they were very close together esp during these away missions, I would have expected her to call her 'Jean-Luc' but not 'JL.' Not even Beverly ever called Picard with the latter.
