I like how Raffi is sooo "OH PLEASE" when Picard does that.
It's funny how everyone forgot that Engage was Pike's catchphrase in The Cage, but now became associated with Picard and Discovery changed Pike's to Hit It.

Actually no. Converting their sun to a black hole by itself wouldn't rip the world apart. It would go on orbiting the black hole just like the sun so long as nothing disturbed its orbit.

Of course, it would soon enter the mother of all ice ages - and then the air would start freezing out - but you'd have a good deal of time. Earth would take approximately a year to get to -73 degrees Celsius, for example. So while there isn't plenty of time, there's time enough to get people offworld, and even have some survive in underground habitats (provided they had a power source). Maybe even undersea habitats if Romulus is geologically active enough to keep the water liquid at the bottom of the ocean.
You havent factored in the gravitational pull of the black hole from which not even light can escape, remember this singularity isnt in a system nearby, its actually at the heart of the Romulus system, it would rip everything apart relatively quickly and trying to escape from it after it has formed would be highly unlikely.

It would be a slower death certainly but they would not have long and the entire system would be pulled in and torn apart.

I'm wondering if Raffi might be an augmented human like Bashir and his pals who were temporarily brought together in DS9. That would explain why Picard notes she can 'see things that other's can't'. how he could have used his position to protect her and ensure she could keep her security clearance and why the moment he resigned, her clearance was revoked, not to mention why she's not particularly stable.

The gravitational pull of the Black Hole would be the same as the sun it replaced, so no.

Vic Fontaine has probably been deactivated if AI has been banned. I'm guessing The Doctor from Voyager, who'll be seen in Season 2, went into hiding.

Dude, gravity is gravity. A black hole is only inescapable near its event horizon - it's not some object sucking everything into it. Orbits around a stellar-mass black hole at 1AU are just as stable as they are around a non-collapsed star at 1AU.

See here:

A common question in physics classes is to imagine what would change if the sun were replaced with a black hole of the same mass, Raymond said. The answer is that nothing would change regarding the planets' orbits — if the black hole had the same mass as the sun, the orbits would remain the same. (Life on Earth would obviously suffer from the lack of light and heat in such a scenario, Raymond added.)

I didn't get a good look at the weapons, but they looked more Romulan than Starfleet. Maybe Laris and Zhaban installed those as protection.
Yeah, Picard had kind of a surprised look on his face when he dove under the furniture and saw the weapon.

While Nero's hatred of the Federation is even more justified, his hatred of Spock's isn't. Not only was Spock conjuring insane plans to try to save Romulus, he was literally the only Federationer even trying.

I wonder if Oh's sunglasses were deliberately in the scene to show that she is a Romulan (Vulcan' inner eyelid anyone.?) and who or what Soji's mother is? Android too? Silly questions I know, but I still wondering...

Unless she's from the MU. (God, I hope not.)

There's nothing saying no other federation citizens had tried.
My post wasn't meant to be taken that literally, it was poorly worded. I wouldn't be surprised if the sharpest minds of the Fed, unauthorized, were involved like Scotty. We know Spock and Scotty had to have hung out as Spock knew Scotty's transwarp beaming gimmick (which isn't mentioned at all so far here, but there's no way they could find that much power could beam out all Romulans anyway)

The most hilarious part of this episode is that Nick Meyer was right and there is smoking in the future. :guffaw:
Maybe it was Captain Jellico.
They'll reveal that just in time for the Riker apperance.

Go read up on how a black hole works. Something Kurtzman and Abrams should have done

Sort of another so-so episode for me. Hope we get to more interesting places from here.

AI's haven't been banned, Synth's have.

If Star Fleet shut down Computer AI's three quarters of the Feet would be useless.
Then the synth ban is ultimately trivial as we've seen plenty of holograms capable of doing physical harm (and more, as seen with Moriarty) and even holographic bullets can kill.

If the Rios hologram goes bad one day, the synth ban is ultimately meaningless. He could even impersonate Rios (Clu and Tron vibes here)

Rated this one "9." A solid episode.

Enjoyed the fact this episode validated my initial skepticism regarding Starfleet's overreaction to the Mars incident. Who doesn't love being proved right in the face of opposition. Nice to learn that Jean-Luc Picard is a pro-second amendment guy .. a private citizen with so many firearms around his manor, WOW! :techman: Negative: Once again the Romulan ninjas are shown to be of Keystone Cops caliber.

The writing has been the best Star Trek has seen this century, in my opinion. Very sharp and on point. Thank you, Michael Chabon! I like Discovery very much, however, the multiple changes in direction over the course of it's short life (2 seasons) has been noticeable.

Negative: Some of the acting performances have been good. Some have been somewhat self-conscious. Some superficial. Maybe it's the editing, IDK.

I am definitely going to re-watch this episode. LLAP.
