Another solid episode. Not great, but I'd put par with last week's. Again too much expo and set-up and not enough stuff happening. I agree that these three should have been truncated into one 90 minute episode with a bit of a bigger climax.

It's clear that Disco's structural problems continue here. *And I don't mean this as a slight against serialized storytelling.

However, I do love how - once again - we get humans acting like humans. Especially Picard. These three episodes have presented him as a more complete individual than seven seasons and four films ever did. Truth be told, I always found the base character under Stewart's performance to be pretty vapid and not particularly compelling. It's just that Patrick Stewart is fucking Patrick Stewart. So he made us love the character. None the less, deep down, there was never really any there there, as the kids say. Which is why I was always a "Kirk."

I also love how unabashedly derisive this show is about the Roddenberryistic pretentious bullshit. Raffi's 'circumstance' (for lack of a better word) is really a breath of fresh air. I've always said Star Trek isn't about humans "being" better, it's about "doing" better. Thre isn't any kind of lesson to take away if you just hand-wave it away with the "humans have evolved" rider. But at the same time, humans doing better feels disingenuous if the avatar/analog is something unrecognizable.

You're assuming she's 100% full-blooded Vulcan. You're also assuming all Vulcans have the same evolutionary eye structure, which given that Vulcan's have different skin pigments and other evolutionary traits probably isn't true either. Heck, assuming she's a Romulan posing as a Vulcan; if it's true that Romulans - as the very episode stipulates - of different hemispheres were on Romulus long enough to develop brow ridges, then they've probably been there long enough to develop different eyes.

Of course, all that is immaterial because sunglasses aren't just about protection. Some people even wear their sunglasses at night, so they can watch you weave then breathe your storylines. Also, it's deceiving and cuts through security.
She was probably going to neurolize her.

Yes, it would still end with his resignation, but Picard is a guy that's had a 50 year Starfleet career. He's got contacts in the Neutral Zone you have to imagine. He's got contacts within the Romulan Empire. He would at least CHECK the Tal Shiar connection. He would try other ways....and if he had to clash with Starfleet again, he would....and then resign. And I would show him moving into the Chateau, and not being at peace there because it still felt like "Robert's chateau" and not his. Since he never felt like he belonged there in the first place.

But anyway, more time per episode and more characterization doesn't mean things move slowly. I regularly watch Korean and Pakistani dramas, and they have runtimes of 60-80 minutes per episode. They aren't slow. Rather, they're immersive.
I think Picard was in a state of shock that Star Fleet actually let him take retirement.
Admiral Clancy was quite correct about his hubris.

Kirk probably went through the same feelings/emotions when he was put behind a desk.

It took Kirk about two years to figure it out.
Picard took a tad bit longer.
;)

I was thinking that perhaps the sunglasses were some kind of device for her to manipulate Dr. Juarti.
Let's Commodore Oh get close enough to do some kind of weird mind-meld without Agnes realizing really whats happening.
Aha! Didn't we see precisely that in one of the ad clips? That could be Oh!

I really believe that it refers to Data killing the Borg Queen.
The Entire Collective would remember that moment well and if Data's 'bits' were used to create the Twins then that is what is driving this.
The Romulans apparently believe that the Twins also have the ability to channel the Queen herself.

Well the last episode said that one drone had been in stasis for 14 years. So apparently they have had this cube for a long time. We see that Hugh is senior in all this, but we dont know what that means. Did Hughs group help the Romulans capture a cube? It has what appears to be battle damage. I do not think it was a Borg resistance cube. More to be revealed. It is a Romulan site, not Borg, so I assume Hugh has problems with how the Romulans are running this. It seemed that way.

I am glad that Raffi explicitly referred to there being billions of lives at risk in the supernova blast radius during the flashback scene, given the inexplicable debate some people were engaging in after the first episode that 900 million seemed too low a figure when obviously Starfleet would not have been the only ones participating in the evacuation.

Interesting references to wealth and money in this episode, whether it was Raffi implying Picard is rich whilst she is poor or Rios saying how expensive it is to hire him. I know many Trek fans are convinced money is alien to the Federation but I would love some more exploration of economics in the Federation within the canon... Earth may have abandoned currency but has every Federation world? The Bank of Bolias existed in TNG, so clearly some Fed members still appeared to be using a local currency.

As I've said before...
The Earth of TNG may have developed to the point where a 'Currency' is no longer necessary for Daily Living.
But it doesn't mean that "Money" no longer exists.
People don't need it, but may still want to use it.

Raffi & Rios are probably the outliers.
They have chosen to live in such a manner that doesn't include being dependent on what ever norms TNG Society provides.

Due to circumstances beyond their control, their lives have become twisted and neither sees a way to get out.

I don't know how poor she is, but Raffi's glittering bohemian hermitage made me faint with desire.

Hmmm. Well, a bit slower than the last two eps. I thought they'd kill off at least one of the two Romulans at the Chateau, if not both. They could still do that and it would really piss me off. I've grown really fond of them.

So Soji is slowly waking up. Why? What is her purpose. What is the purpose of her mother, who very obviously lied to her and then did something to make her sleep.

Narek. He and his sister are...unnaturally close. Fucked up relationship there. He's hot, but I could do without him.

I guess I'm dumb. I didn't pick up on a compromised Jurati, although it seemed odd that she showed up at the time they were being attacked. In retrospect after reading here, it makes sense.

I'm still not a fan of dark Trek and this is dark Trek but I like the show which is a big surprise to myself.

They just need to name a character T'Bonz now...

thribs:

Certainly not, but I could teach them about using the word "fuck" properly. ;)

I literally yelled at the screen "No you don't!" when I thought they would die. They're the best thing about the show to me. At least right now.

Agree 100%

That could certainly be Narek's nickname.

He is 'boning' Soji.

:nyah:

And about Narek and Soji....it's been like 2 days, and he's already telling her he's falling for her. Did Maddox not give her positronic brain any sense? That's sketchy, girl. Can't you see he's playing you?
Is he? Or is he indeed falling for her?
