Doubtful they'd have Beverly show up for what was essentially just exposition. If you're gonna have beverly, you have to do more than just that.

It seems highly likely, as others have said, that they're saving Beverly for the right moment. Hence no tossed-off name drops or appearances until the time is right.
I'm not suggesting that they would have given her the exact same lines as Benayoun. Just that they may have written some early version of the script with McFadden in mind. In any case, it's interesting that they hired David Paymer to play the doc, as he's a pretty big-name character actor as these things go. I don't think they brought him on just for some one-off exposition. I suspect he'll be a recurring character.

Even though I said earlier in this thread that Sub Rosa probably is her most memorable episode, I'll admit The High Ground was pretty good.
Yeah I really love the high ground. I also love attached, though I wish more was done with it. Also remember me. That was always a good one.

Not talking about "exact lines", but I can't imagine they were ever going to bring Beverly in for just one scene of getting a medical diagnosis. I'm sure they want her appearance -- if/when it happens -- to have real dramatic weight.

I loved the fact that they got Paymer for this part. He's obviously a great actor. I could see him never showing up again or coming back. Either makes sense. Maybe they just wanted a fairly expositional scene to have an actor with real gravitas behind him. It's also a blast to imagine a young Stewart and Paymer on board the Stargazer 50-60 years ago.

^ I hope it's not the latter.

If so many Starfleet officers (Picard, Riker, Troi, Hunsiker, and apparently Rios) are resigning their commissions because they're angry and disillusioned, that would seem to indicate that Starfleet is in a very sorry state, which I desperately hope is not the case.

In any case, if all that Riker and Troi wanted was to be together, they could do it while still serving on the Titan, amirite? I'm not aware of any Starfleet regs that forbid married couples from serving together.

I'm assuming they decided they didn't want to raise their kids on a starship.

Am I the only one that would just love it if EVERY TNG main cast member pops up some time during PIC..?? Don’t get how anyone could be bothered by this...........

This is how I feel too. I totally get that this is supposed to be a “different" show, and not “TNG 2.0”…but also, as a fan of “TNG 1.0", of course I’m hoping we see the old characters again. Why wouldn’t I?

Back when the Picard show was first announced and all the speculation began, nothing surprised me more than all the people who seemed so totally against any of the old-school characters showing up. Personally, I was on the various sites and message boards practically every day during production hoping for a report that Gates McFadden was spotted on-set.

In fact…I kinda wish they had gotten Natalija Nogulich to come back and reprise Nechayev as the admiral who chews out Picard in episode 2. There, I said it, lol.

If I had to guess, I'd say they didn't want to raise a family on board ship (assuming the Titan can even accommodate families like the E-D could.) Doubly so if Riker was the CO.
I'm with you. The scene seems perfectly tailored to Admiral Nechayev.
I don't know, I think an Admiral Shelby would be a more interesting fit for that. ;)

After leaving the Enterprise and accepting the position of admiral, Picard has a long-distance conversation with Beverly. He decides not to ask her to join him, and they each seem to decide to move on without ever articulating their feelings. They do not seem to have significant exchanged over the next five years in the novel.

What I read is most consistent with the idea that they are saving Beverly Crusher for such a time when her appearance will carry heft.

Maybe an early draft did have her delivering the information, but I am not sure of that. What I got from the appearance of Benayoun was that this was another person who Picard was connected to, part of a wider community we have rarely seen, and that this person was also sufficiently not known for the delivery of the news to not be overwhelmed by the identity of the person delivering the news.

.

Is the novel out already?! I thought it was due out until next week?
