Are you afraid how the new Picard series might change the way you look at TNG? A discussion related to this is in another thread about Lal and could she appear in 'Picard'.
Keep this in mind: https://comicbook.com/startrek/2019/12/29/star-trek-picard-next-generation-not-a-sequel/
It cannot change any perception on TNG. Because it is not a sequel. So it's not taking place in our TNG universe. It's in its own sandbox and that alone caters to everyone, which is actually pretty great. No problems so far.
I'm not afraid I guess but a little bit concerned. Obviously it's been twenty years and people change even in scifi.... but still, how may that affect the way we see certain people, Picard being the first in line. After 'Picard' are some scenes different in TNG? ”Future Picard would have done that differently” etc.
People can and sometimes do change. That in of itself doesn't faze me. The issue is to keep the trope interesting and not worn out.
If a character like Lal would appear, would that somehow ”ruin” episode 'The Offspring'? Depending on what would happen of course. What about other characters? One example could be Worf's brother Kurn. I think DS9 completely messed up by erasing his memory, then lying to him and making him someone completely different. (if anyone likes that episode, sorry, but I think that was dumb and also a discussion to be had somewhere else, that would be too off topic?)
Lal fried its brains and it's a shame the spelling wasn't "Lol" (IMHO the episode was a garish half-asleep retread of TMoaM but back to PIC). Also, Data never had a preference for his "offspring", which was clearly defined. Picard was applying and projecting emotion where none existed, which seems incredulous for either Picard or Data but let's explore this for some reason anyway: Did Picard forget all that? Or did he imagine it at the time? Irumodic Syndrome or any other form of senility induced by advanced age is confirmed? Or was Picard romanticizing vicariously because part of him did not want to have a family but another part had? Which is more soap opera than sci-fi but whatever, exploring a whole series just on that is a waste.
Why not have Picard remember out of the blue that Data wanted three girls and three boys? Then they could do a crossover with the Brady Bunch while they're at it too. Let them be super strong and fly around with capes and shoot laser beams from their eyes. They can do a crossover with Superman that would put Zod to shame. Or maybe not.
TNG is my favourite series and for a TV series it means almost too much for me. I wouldn't like it to be messed up with 'Picard'. That won't happen most likely but I'm nervous, maybe I shouldn't be. It's just that once you've watched an episode, it's pretty much impossible to unwatch it.
Whatever happens in PIC, do not worry. Again, its makers say it is not a sequel. So TNG is unharmed and people can decide for themselves it's a sequel all they want if they want. It means it doesn't need to exist if people don't want it. It's its own show featuring some character names from TNG that is detached from the show that created them.
As I type this, this sound stupid.... sorry for wasting your time if you read this far.
EDIT - Should this topic be in TNG forum?
No time wasted, nothing sounds stupid. And I see your point as to which forum room it should be in but I'd have leaned to the PIC room too.
