Hux was the (illegitimate) son of an Imperial flag officer, one who ran a military school before the end of the civil war. Hux had a bit of a chip on his shoulder from how his father and the other old-guard officers treated him, which probably contributed to him forming a cabal (including, but likely not limited to Phasma) to depose his father and, possibly, the other Imperial veterans from leadership in the First Order and have the younger generation take over.

The specifics of how we got from Hux Senior and Rae Sloane to Snoke, Ren, and Hux Junior calling the shots in the First Order is one of the big details of the New Republic era that remains vague. TRoS has thrown a bit of a wrench into it as a story (it's now less the neo-Nazis starting by killing their own parents and more Palpatine having an internal reorganization, probably mostly out of spite), but I expect it'll shake out as something interesting in the end once people figure out how to deal with the elimination of Snoke as an individual.

Well having watched both the last Star Wars episode and the Madolorian I have to say Mando is done much better. They should have used Favereau for the last trilogy he is a fantastic story teller and understands characters. I firmly believe he would have written Luke’s final adventure much better then what we got.

That is actually in the film. Pryde says "as I served you in the old war" which clearly implies the Imperial era.

I don't reject YT videos out of hand just because "YouTube." However, I will reject it in lieu of actual discussion on a discussion board. If I'm discussing SW with friends I don't pull up a YT video and let the video do the talking-I do the talking.

Same thing here. There are plenty of YT videos out there and not one of them is more right than the other. I'd rather have an actual discussion with a person than cut and paste a video link and be done with it.

Also, YT videos are all driven by ad revenue. Guess what? Bashing on Disney means a lot more clicks and shares, so there is going to be a bias there. Again, I'd rather have real discussion.

    And mileage will vary.

I finally saw the film, and I think it's a C+. It's my least favourite ST film, which is a real shame as I loved TFA and, in particular, TLJ.

There is a lot of fan service here, perhaps too much? I think one problem was never quite accepting Palpatine wasn't dead when I heard he was going to be in the film? Then, I just thought if I enjoy the film, it wouldn't matter. However, this film is channeling ROTJ, and Palps doesn't seem very menacing here, compared to OT and PT.

Ridley and Driver put in great performances, though I think they have in their other two films as well.

One thing they did get right was Leia's send-off. How bittersweet that was. :(

The most exciting part of the film was Lando and Chewie turning up with the huge fleet of rebels. Awesome!

My general feeling is that it's one thing to have characters from each trilogy passing the torches into the following, as it's a tradition that was built upon, and besides, it's what fans have come to expect from the saga at this point. But then we have Palpatine and I fully admit that it didn't sit well with me, the story notwithstanding. Because to me, it paints a picture of the underlying problems the trilogy has had. Here you have new characters that are supposed to carry a new trilogy and fight against a rising threat, and I was fully expecting them having to face a new epic big bad, because why not? But then, out came Palpatine and it felt like they were relying on the old too much instead. I feel like the trilogy should have come up with something of its own as he kind of too easily eclipses everything else and putting the new characters under his shadow. But that's just my opinion.

It was a big surprise having Kylo Ren take out Snoke in TLJ, but it did the overall narrative any favours for TROS.

I'm kind of curious about some things:

    - IIRC, at the end of TLJ, the Resistance had been almost completely wiped out, with the only survivors left on board the Falcon. Yet in TROS, they're back? How far ahead did the narrative jump in time?

    - Whatever happened to Phasma?

    - Was Snoke ever an actual living being? Or was he an inanimate puppet for Palpatine to speak through?

    One year.
    Died.
Yes, he was. He appears to be a clone and used by Palpatine to spearhead the First Order. Snoke was a puppet but like Grievous was a puppet.

Finally saw this today. (a movie theater for an early showing on a Thursday is a beautiful thing - no kids, no inbred morons with cell phones, etc.).

Enjoyed it. Was a little sad at the end when I realized this the end of a storyline I've been following for over 42 years. Enjoyed the surprise appearance of a certain character. Nice to see Y-wing fighter (my favorites) again. New droid was kind of annoying, IMO. Some nice closure for the OT characters. Not sure I'm seeing why so many folks seem to have disliked this so much, but then I haven't thought the sequel trilogy overall has been nearly as bas as a lot folks do.

I'm still a bit flummoxed by Han's return. Han was obviously not Force sensitive, so it's not like he's a Force ghost. So what's he doing there?

I got the impression it was Leia doing the Force projection thing from TLJ, but doing so as Han.

That's my theory, thus why Leia weakened to the point of death.

I thought his saying, "I'm your memory" explained it all.

Not everything's magic or a ghost.

My interpretation was that he was basically meant to be a visualization of Kylo Ren resolving his issues with his parents, and becoming Ben Solo again.

Leia was SUPPOSED to be the character in the scene - but due to the unfortunate death of Carrie Fischer, they brought in Harrison Ford and left the audience to assume (for whatever reason) - this was how Leia helped Kylo return to the 'Light Side'.

I think however you want to interpret it is fine. I think Leia's passing helped her connect with Kylo and perhaps send Han to him.
So Han isn't force sensitive but like all living things he had midichlorians. Maybe Leia used her last power to boost the connection because in her view Ben still needs his father.
    Anyway, i love that scene.

What King Daniel said. I think it really was simply an inner dialogue in Ben's head.
