Spoilers Picard Prequel "Children of Mars"

Just watched it. It was OK. Is there going to be a grading thread?

Based on the end credits the creators of Picard series will be listed as "Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, Kristen Beyer & Alex Kurtzman" and also it says based on "Star Trek: The Next Generation created by Gene Roddenberry".

This episode will be contentious for people who adhere to a perceived canon of all things Star Trek.

We have two characters who will probably be forgotten, who have a conflict with each other which is quickly solved by their shared loss, with the song "Heroes" by David Bowie playing as their conflict escalates.

My excitement for Picard has dimmed. I will watch the show initially; however, I am not looking forward to it.

I hope this is the last of the Short Treks. On the whole, I have not enjoyed them.

The other two ships seen are the Federation tugs, last seen towing the crippled Enterprise.

Im not sure I understand why.

If you’re suggesting that people will find the episode contentious due to those issues, that’s a possibility for sure. I was thinking the same thing when I watched it. However, I’d like to point out that style and canon are two very different things. These were stylistic choices. It literally has nothing to do with canon.

Regardless, I am intrigued.

Seems a bit fragile........Like last years batch I am pretty sure it will make more sense as the season progresses. A six minute short dimming your excitement for a 10 hour series seems a bit premature. I just have more questions and can't wait to start getting answers.

Oh, I know they might make more of them. People can say they wish for something not to happen, knowing that it will happen anyway. I am expressing my displeasure with them. They had one or two goods ones, with Calypso being my favorite.

It is contentious for we have ships from the mid-23rd century being active in 2385. Other than the attacking ships, there are no modern ship designs, like what was seen in 1990s Trek. We could reconcile seeing the ships in Discovery, by saying we only got a limited view of what Starfleet was like in that century. How do we reconcile these antique designs being active in the late 24th century?

This is yet another instance of artificial life forms (synths) rebelling against their creators. First, this is a very old storyline. I read a portion of the first story about robots from the 1920s, and what happen there was the robots rebelling against and destroying their creators. Second, I thought the latest attempt at telling this story, in the second season of Discovery, was a catastrophe. Now, we have another rogue AI threat. F--k.

The Hood was still active in 2379 using a design that dated back to around 2285, and there were still Miranda class ships around in 2375, using a design that is possibly as old as the Constitution class, so it's not that much of a stretch...

That being said, it would be a bit ridiculous if all we see in Picard is Discovery-era ships...

I’m not certain how this particular ship is any different than the myriad of Excelsior class vessels we see in the TNG era. 100 years. 150 years. If they’re well-built and well-maintained, what’s the issue? Or, as I believe you suggested, perhaps they’ve come out of mothballs due to Hobus. We’re likely not going to get an explanation, so maybe it’s best to just let that be.

It drives me a little nuts that people are going to complain about stuff like this when we’ve been dealing with inconsistencies in Trek for decades.

It really is a non issue, at least so far in what we have seen. Trek has had numerous ships that have been active in Starfleet, the Klingon Defense Force, etc that are over 100 plus years in service.

On the Federation side we know that the Oberth, The miranda, and the Excelsior (both versions) were used over a hundred years after they entered service. And that's active within Starfleet. On the Klingon side we had K'Tinga and Bird of Prey models that were both active in current military operations 100 plus years after their introduction.

What we don't know is what happens to ships that are no longer active duty in Trek. Due they get scuttled, do they get broken down into component pieces for recycling, do they get used in the private sector, or for other Federation duty (at least with a couple Miranda variants, and with a handful of Oberth's we know they are used outside of Starfleet as well, and how many end up and at unknown's yards.

So we know for fact based on Trek's history, that a ship line can be in active Starfleet duty (even in times of peace) over a hundred years. We know that those ships can serve in combat situations, and that they can be used in mass in times of war. We also know that those same classes can be used outside of Starfleet for other ventures. We know this. This is documented fact within Trek's history.

Now if after watching the show, we don't ever see any models that started from outside a 10 year window plus or minus of the original series, I could see someone being bothered. But I am going to hazard a guess and say that we will see some newer ships as well.

Um... It was okay. Definitely more a mood piece than a plotted episode. Had a lump in my throat at the end, but the trite concept and music felt emotionally manipulative. Had they kept the concept, but expanded to a longer episode where the characters had dialog and personality, this could have been something special. Instead it felt like a lot of squandered potential.

Any good screen shots anyone?
Are we allowed to post some?

The problem is not that they are old, but that we haven't seen any ships from that era in TNG-NEM. So they're pretty absent across hundreds of episodes, but then they're suddenly back? The Excelsior, Miranda, Oberth appeared throughout TNG, DS9, Generations... but there were no Magees at Wolf 359, any Dominion battle, or the FC battle.

Ooopps have I put my foot in it? Probably not... I'm just used to seeing Screen shots on other websites etc. I can wait until a review article comes up!

Screenshots can be posted quite legally for purposes of review. That falls under “fair use” in copyright law.

As this episode is only available in the US it’s hard to comment, but it makes sense that older ships and designs would be prevalent in the core systems. The new seat fastest ships would be off exploring or putting up a strong face to the tholians and Klingons.
