Yeah, likely this, but it's also entirely possible that he simply didn't want to forever be attached to the role. Even as good as the money could be, sometimes an actor knows when to say no.
That's too bad! I think it's his best role, that and the Fresh Prince Of Bel Air.
I just saw Men in Black: International today as a matter of fact. Before I give my thoughts, I will say about Will Smith, he has every right to choose whatever movie he wants to be on, and he has earned the right as well to be paid well for it. Independence Day and Men in Black would not be what they were without him, and we can see how the fates of the entries that didn't have him starring in them turned out. And Aladdin is the highest grossing film of his career, so maybe Smith has a pretty good nose for business (with some occasional missteps, but overall he's been pretty good at picking roles), and perhaps he wanted a new challenge. Where else was Agent J going to go after Men in Black 3, and while there might have been more room to explore ID4's Hiller, who's to say they would've actually took Hiller into intersting places?
As for Men in Black: International, I didn't think it was as bad as it's box office and Rotten Tomatoes's score suggests. I'm not a big fan of this franchise. I've only seen the previous films recently and now the fourth. International is about on the same level as the other films. I think Thompson and Hemsworth bring their own charisma and chemistry to their roles and while the story was slight, it moved quickly, like the other Men in Black films, something I appreciated.
I thought the Hive started out potentially interesting visually, but didn't care for the final form. I liked the alien forms of Les Twins. Overall I liked the sleek production design. To me, International is a decent film. The story needed more work, and I would've been okay with getting more character development as well. The action was okay.
I don't know why this film bombed. Though it felt slight, it was still not bad summer popcorn fare.

I actually thought the two leads were fun in this but I've said my thoughts already. I didn't mind that they cast Chris Hemsworth in this. He was fun. Also Tessa Thompson was delightful to watch.
I finally saw this movie now that it's out on home video. Spoilers ahead for those who haven't seen it...

I guess it was entertaining enough, though I agree that it felt quite "by the numbers." It didn't quite expand the mythology like I was hoping. On the plus side, I did enjoy the performances. Thompson and Hemsworth had great on-screen chemistry.
I thought M was too eager to join up with this shadowy, secretive organization that mind-zapped her parents and tried to capture her cute alien buddy when she was little. That kind of traumatic experience would be more likely to set her on a lifelong crusade to expose them and take them down, or something. She also seemed to be too competent for a new recruit who had been stuck in a dead-end help desk job for who knows how long. Sure, the FBI interviewer said she scored highly in all areas including weapons training. But a little more reveal of her background would have been nice.
To me there was too much reliance on the visual gags and tropes of the franchise. Oh look, bigger and bigger shiny metal guns, yet again! A ridiculously high-tech chrome subterranean transport vehicle that's unnecessarily disguised as a normal crappy subway car since apparently it just goes straight from one MIB facility to another, so that we get to see this awesome transformation! It's as if the movie was loudly shouting "Look at me, I'm a MEN IN BLACK movie!!" And for all that, they neglected to include some clever, mind-bending, fourth wall-breaking gag sequence at the end like the previous movies did.
And the retcon of the MIB organization being around and helping lots of aliens come to Earth back in Gustave Eiffel's day clashes with the history that was given in the previous MIB movies.

I had a good time with it. I love the older MIB movies but this one is the best sequel so far. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson play off each other really well and they both bring a lot to this movie.
You're right it wasn't ground-breaking or anything, but if they make another one with the same characters, I'd probably watch it.

Will Smith being in After Earth was very close to being a career killer. It has been documented that he had a hard time getting lead roles - that's why he took an ensemble role in Suicide Squad. He seems to have completed a comeback now, though he isn't even close to the top star he used to be.

I don't think themovie was THAT bad....but since he also produced it (I think), and didn't M. Night Shymalan direct?
Also, it REALLY starred Jayden SMith, who isn't that great an actor.
I thought it was decent...and appreciated the attempt at a futuristic accent
However, I think all the BUZZ around it is what killed it... perhaps one of the early Internet-destroyers...
