It was a hail mary maneuver, probably using up all his energy in the hopes that it would dispatch the threat.

And it failed, miserably. Even if it knocked Thelev back a tad, Kirk was barely able to collect his thoughts before he was stabbed in the back. The life-endangered adrenaline that kicked in was enough to flip Thelev over and knee him into unconsciousness, and then use up all his energy to stand up and communicate to the bridge to send a security team before collapsing.

The biggest case for combadges in all of Trek.

 

Or it was just a silly bit of amateurish fight choreography that wouldn't stand up today.....

 

Well, of course, but my explanation is more fun and creatively fulfilling.

 

Don’t forget, the first double fist to the stomach causes them to bend over. The second, down on the back from behind is the one to take them down.

It’s a devastating move, sure as you can escape any enemy by dodging right, dodging left, then rolling away.

 

Kirk has a weapon of (m)Ass destruction.

As long as Kirk doesn't try any of these moves on Bruce Lee or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

In that fight with Thelev Kirk was totally knocked off his game by the fact that the crewman who saw the attack begin ran off.

 

Look at this despicable Coward of a crewman who pretends he doesn't see Kirk being attacked by the Andorian and just keeps on walking down the corridor!

 

Isn't it the Captains' prerogative to get his shirt ripped whenever and wherever he wants? Also, Deck 5 is interestingly empty to being with, perhaps by strict decree. Interfering with a diplomatic duel doesn't appear appropriate when Sarek and Gav are at it - why would this one be different?

The one thing that has definitely improved over the years is the hand to hand combat choreography.

 

I was gonna say the same thing, but with this example:
It has come a long way. Archer, with only one hand, kinda puts Kirk to shame

 

And Archer fought a bona fide Andorian, an ice cold killer - Kirk faced a mere Orion, who was actually quite green...

Enterprise must have gotten new stunt coordinators. Not only are the fight scenes far beyond anything in TOS, they are far beyond anything in TNG, DS9, and VOY.
