Tarantino Trek - what could we expect?

Yeah. I hadn't even touched in his personal conduct. I had just noted that his style and approach to film may not suit Trek. I get accused of hand wringing and entitlement.

Pointless. Apparently QT can do no wrong.

i just ranted about open mindedness in the picard thread, so i'll try not to sound like a hypocrite here. but i don't think his style is right for trek and i don't want a profane, ultra violent entry in the franchise. when it was tarantino's film alongside a 4th kelvin film, the idea was more palatable but now that it stands as the only potential cinematic outing coming relatively soon, i find it really disappointing.

that being said, he's a gifted filmmaker with a clear love for (if not complete understanding of) star trek, so i'm looking for the positives and interested to see this new take.

Spock is an unreliable narrator of himself at times. If he didn't have feelings, he wouldn't have tried to purge them in the motion picture, only to realize it was silly to deny who he was.

Oh, god, yes. Remember Spock's joyful outburst in "Amok Time" when he realized "Jim" wasn't dead--and how he fell over himself to deny it afterwards. Never trust a Vulcan when they say they have no emotions or can't fall in love.

Heck, as I understand it, the whole point of Vulcans is that they are more passionate than humans, which is why they have to work so hard to keep their emotions under control. They're not robots; they're just repressed.

I loved the whole Spock/Uhura bit in the 2009 movie. What's the point of rebooting the timeline if you're not going change things up? This was something we'd never seen before, which was a feature, not a bug.

I'm trying really hard to not be hypocritical as well, as I am often asking people to approach DISCO with an open mind. And I need to approach Picard with a more open mind (that's harder for me).

But, thus far, QT has not impressed me when it comes to Star Trek. I am hesitant to say it will be bad, but he does not have the credit with me that many others have given him. That's OK. I won't ask anyone to curb their enthusiasm. But, I won't censor my concerns either.

Abrams was more suitable for Trek, but QT intrigues me much more. He’d be the first prestigious director to helm a Trek film since Robert Wise 40 years ago. This is very uncommon, and that’s why it’s more exciting.

Now, having watched his latest film, I truly believe no matter how hard Tarantino wants to do Trek he’s gonna have a VERY hard time dealing with the studio system, to the point he’ll probably walk off frustrated.

If he actually makes it all the way to final cut, it will be nothing short of a miracle that it ever happened at all.

Tbh,one way or another this movie (if it is made at all) May well be the last hurrah for this iteration of Trek.So the gloves may well and truly be off giving QT carte blanc to do whatever he likes...(I’m trying to fit in at least one more cliche into that sentence).
I’m not detecting any great appetite from Paramount for this project other than this “will he won’t he”debate.I say just hand him the keys and let him fly...

I've said this for Kelvin Trek 4: Make it like it's the last Star Trek film ever. Go wild. Take chances. Don't restrain yourself to franchise concerns like "what will this mean for the sequel?", that should only be something a hypothetical future director will have to worry about. If you can get Pine back on board somehow, take it even further!

Fuck continuity.

There. I said it. Have great story. And then do that. Don't care about canon. Don't make it part of the story like ST09. Don't waste precious screen time for it. Don't even mention it at all.

If Tarantino wants to tell a story about Shatner-Kirk and Nimoy-Spock, in the middle of the run of TOS, using the actors Pine ad Quinto? Fucking go for it! Make them wear the 60s uniform and cram out the original physical studio model for all that matters!

Continue/Drop the Spock-Uhura romance. Visit/ignore the un-/destroyed Vulcan, whatever. Just tell a good story.

Or the movie being a period piece about how TOS got filmed in the 60s, with actors driving around Hollywood, a narcistic B-actor (William Shatner, played by Chris Pine) being on a personal vendetta against a chain-smoking Leonard Nimoy (played by Quinto) stealing his show, dropping lots of f-bombs, all while some small-minded studio bosses try to can a tyrannical Gene Roddenberry (played by Leonardo DiCaprio).

yes they could do just that like a 150m budget TOS episode ( which it sounds QT wants to do).. the ships/sets etc looking more 'TOSy' (use the Disco-prise set?) and Pine etc are supposed to look the same as Shatner & Co anyway (Spock Primes reaction to Kirk and Scotty in ST09). providing nothing too contradictory happens in the story (and if it does it gets reset by the end) Would casual Trek moviegoers even remember the previous 3 films that much or care it was supposed to be the 'Kelvin'verse and that the Ent was destroyed in the last film and that it was supposed to be the Ent 'A'? (actually even if they did it kind of fits as theyd just figure the QT/TOS Ent was just the new Enterprise 'A' looking more like it did in the old 60s series at last. same with Vulcan if they show it - just no need to say its 'new'Vulcan) and us hardcore fans whod know what was up would get its supposed to be in the Primeverse set after Turnabout Intruder/before TMP. like the 1971 2 part finale of the 5 year mission that we never got (like the way ST09 was the origin we never had albeit an alt universe take on it) - any Shatner or Stewart appearances could work ok (whos to say TOS Kirk never saw his future self or Picard?) with the Ent probably ending up pretty much destroyed (prompting the TMP refit). ok that might sound abit 'Beyond' but this wouldn't be written by Pegg directed by Fast&Furious

And when Tarantino is asked how his film is supposed to fit in continuity his only answer should be “it’s just a movie”.

But seriously, it would be true to the spirit of TOS standalone episodic television. New episode, no reference to past events, you’re just supposed to take it as a singular story where the ramifications never impact the following episodes.

Fans will of course hate it, but there’s always fans that hate something so whatever. Whatever Tarantino does, I’ll think of the first three films as their own trilogy, with Tarantino’s being a weird standalone epilogue of sorts. Kind of like “These Are the Voyages...”, except for the sucking part.
