Donny's Refit Enterprise Interiors (Version 2.0)

[...]And if I want to finally visualize cool things like a working rollaway deck (that realistically doesn't have enough room to be retracted into the walls as it appears in the matte), I'll definitely have to ignore realistic dimensions.[...]
My assumption is "rollaway" means like a garage door that rolls into a cylinder when opened.

That was my assumption as well. It would still be outside the hull, but not any further than the side cargo containers already do.

I’ve got an idea how it will work, in a telescoping fashion. I just have to work it out in 3D
I just hit Andy up about this to see what his thinking was. Will inform upon his reply.

EDIT!

Well, he got back to me right away.

ANDREW PROBERT WROTE:
What I had in mind was that the decks would slide down along a track between the wall-mounted cargo units and outer hull. Imagine a roll-top desk,… the segmented deck flexible enough to do that. Naturally, the "sleeve" this deck slides down into would have to be fairly perpendicular, in it’s curve, and not coincide with the shape of the outer hull. In other words, it would look more like a quarter-cylinder, not a funnel.

And, remember, the deck isn’t supposed to slide ALL the way in, because 5 or 6 feet is needed for the walkway-around, past all the Cargo units & lifeboat access (also denied acknowledgement). That is why that visible section of that deck is seen to be solid.

Great! I'll just have a segmented deck attached to the solid deck we see in the matte. The solid deck will theoretically pull the segmented deck out of the wall. Since I never need to show the segments "curving" into the sleeve beyond the bulkhead, I can just model it as a solid, straight piece of segments.

God, I love working in CG. I'm looking forward to how you get around the turboshafts, since it sounds like Probert's pretty solid on the floor coming out of the port and starboard sides, not the fore and aft (which would make life easy).

That's brilliant! Thanks for reaching out to him

Just ran across this pic at random and it's really obvious the pod docks on a tilt.

That is also probably part of the hull where the torpedo deck was hit by Reliant's strafing fire. (above the docking port)

No, they built a different close-up section of the connecting dorsal for that shot. IIRC, it was used for a similar close-ups in Search for Spock and Undiscovered Country when the ship fires torpedoes.

Yeah, there were two separate miniature sets: the engineering hull docking port (seen above) only used when filming TMP (footage later recycled for TWOK) and then there was a miniature set of the dorsal and torpedo bay used in TWOK, TSFS, and TUC.

Anywho, I'm returning to work on the project this weekend. Hope to get some good work on the cargo bay done, but I must admit a part of me is wanting to break away from the Enterprise and Starfleet for a bit and work on a K'tinga bridge....

Ok so I put the K'tinga out of my mind for now and buckled down to get some work done on the upper walkway of the cargo bay. Here's the docking port:

Here it is in TMP (note my green is a fair bit more saturated and more yellow than this docking port set below, in order to keep with the more saturated look of Probert's matte concept. I may end up tweaking the colors further. It's hard to settle on a happy medium when the colors vary between the standing sets and the mattes )

Btw, in TMP, this docking port is labeled "5" but to me it's better if labeled as "6". I'm a little confused as to how the docking ports are numbered. There are 7 total on the Enterprise.

Are they numbered top to bottom, left to right?:
1. Bridge
2. Saucer Underside Port
3. Saucer Underside Starboard
4. Torpedo Bay Port
5. Torpedo Bay Starboard
6. Cargo Bay Port
7. Cargo Bay Starboard

It seems most logical that the two cargo bay ports be numbered as "6" and "7", since if you're counting down from the top of the ship, they are the last two of the 7. Also, I should note that the torpedo bay in TWOK was labeled as Docking Port 4:

Maybe, instead, it's in indeed labeled top to bottom, but for each hull, the port side docking ports are counted first and then starboard ports are counted. Like this:

Primary Hull
1. Bridge
2. Saucer Underside Port
3. Saucer Underside Starboard

Secondary Hull
4. Torpedo Bay Port
5. Cargo Bay Port
6. Torpedo Bay Starboard
7. Cargo Bay Starboard

This method of counting would seem to respect the two numbered ports we see in both TMP and TWOK. I can easily change the number back to 5. Hmm.

Thoughts? Does anyone know how such things are counted on actual naval vessels?

IIRC, there were docking ports on the port and starboard sides of B/C deck in the original version of the upper dome. If the cargo bay scene was filmed prior to the model being revised, then the docking port number should reflect that -- there would be 9 docking ports. If you start with the one behind the bridge and then count down the port side, the cargo bay would be the 5th docking port.

That’s some great info, but unfortunately it doesn’t solve our problem since there are only 7 docking ports. Hmm. What to do?

Aside from matching the computer announcement, I like changing the airlock to "6" if only because it feels like a suspicious number of things were numbered "5" in the movie era. This airlock, the travel pod, the shuttle tug landed at Starfleet HQ in TVH, the Galileo in TFF... it's weird.
