I was just pointing out that you don't have to have a year long contract with Amazon anymore, so one could wait until the show has aired completely and either take the trial month or pay 7,99€ which isn't that bad for 10 hours of content. I regularly pay more for two hours at the movie theater. One could be industrious about it and make a list about things only available on amazon that look interesting and make a point to watch those during the month, too.

And some people just don't use amazon often enough to justify Prime. The few times my mom needs something I order it with my account.

I'm speaking mostly about content and brand recognition. After Disney announced their streaming service I saw people saying that they will get it because they are parents and Disney is the go to for a lot of children's entertainment. So people who are not willing to pay for more than one or two streaming services will likely gravitate to Disney's.

    They own a lot. https://www.cartoonbrew.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/everythingdisneyowns_b.jpg

I wasn't too bothered by it. Only wondered why they didn't do some kind of joint promotion or something. Surely it makes more sense on a global medium such as the Internet and split the revenues according to IP maybe then seeing "Blocked in your country" every time you see a promo for their product.

Was a bit peeved about how they handled the Short Treks though, since everywhere else outside the US/Canada had to wait months to see those and Netflix basically threw them out like a day before the first episode of season 2 premiered (contractual obligation?) like they were an afterthought hidden away in the trailers.

Does make me wonder if CBS may have not liked how short treks were handled either. Could that have been a factor is the Picard to Amazon deal?

I think you don't understand what I meant. You can either get a yearly Amazon Prime subscription for 69 Euro per year, which make each of those 12 months cost 5.75 Euro. Or you can get a monthly Amazon Prime subscription for 7.99 Euro and cancel after whatever month you like.

I didn't even know that it is possible to get Amazon Video without getting Amazon Prime. Are you really sure about this? But if you are right, I wondered why anyone would get Amazon Video and not Amazon Prime, when their monthly subscription price is the same. If I could choose between Amazon Video for 7.99 Euro and Amazon Prime for 7.99 Euro per month, I definitely would get Amazon Prime as it includes much more things.

I didn't know you could quit Prime monthly, too, now. They only introduced the option to get Amazon Video separately last year, and the article I read about it even points out that if you want it year round it's cheaper to just get Prime.

But I was originally responding to a post that said that people would have to subscribe to Prime if they wanted to watch the show. They don't have to do that if they don't want to. And full disclosure, I've had Prime long enough (for free shipping) that I remember how pissed I was when they first added Amazon Video to it without the possibility to opt out, since you had to pay twenty bucks more a year and I didn't feel I needed a streaming service (I didn't even have Netflix back then). And I don't really know how much better the streaming is now, since the UI used to be so bad it largely turned me off from using it. If I didn't order stuff via amazon so often, I would never get Prime just for Amazon Video, especially if I'm mostly just interested in a single show.

I have such low expectations that there is next to no chance of me getting Amazon Prime on top of Netflix.

At first I was like, "no way, fuck that!" but now I'm like, "Take away the free month and to watch the entire first run 'live' enough to enjoy all the chaos here would only be £20"...

I am weak and I hate myself.

I’m curious. We really know next to nothing about the show at all. Why do you already seem to think it’s not going to be good?

Ibut Picard is a different show with a different group of people running it.

I think the better place to look is calypso which was written by the guy in charge of Picard.

Here is how I see it. Trek fans are viewed as a bit of cash cow and the type of fans who might sign up to a streaming service just for Trek and then potentially stick with the service.

Amazon prime decide they want to milk the cash cow that is Trek fans and pick up the Picard show. Netflix already have Discovery, so they don't need the Picard show as much and don't put up much resistance to Amazon. A while back all the Trek TV shows were on Netflix and all the Trek movies were on Prime, so a precedent has kinda already been set to split content.

Amazon Prime and Netflix generally go out of their way not to tread on each others toes. Amazon servers host Netflix and it is something that earns them billions. A successful Netflix is very important for Amazons bottom line, so it's in both their interests to work together and not against each other.

Well, I think my biggest problem is with the Amazon apps. Even on my Fire TV stick, the Netflix app is far superior to the navigating of Amazon videos. The video quality when starting a show tends to take longer to get up to full resolution on Amazon as well, and it starts off lower res than the Netflix one. That said, Amazon does, at least, cut out less frequently for me mid program.

I think if a third series ended up in a third streaming service, I'd be very annoyed though.

I honestly think the fracturization of Star Trek will cripple the franchise overseas.

If you have to order one streaming service just for Star Trek? That's already a bit much, honestly. But having to order multiple services - NO ONE's going to do that. Well, yeah, some. But not most.

Which means, internationally, people will only watch one or two of the Star Trek series, but not all of them.

And holy hell, will this forum struggle to continue it's "no piracy"-guideline. Because, yeah, people will do that if they want to keep up.

I think people will start posting "adblocker" messages to distract mods from the "piracy" posts. :D
