* "He means in case one of us gets dead along the way." "Get off my ass... Get off my ass, sir. " Reno keeps killing it. Seriously.

Agreed. It's a familiar line, but it was great with Tig's delivery.

* SOMEBODY OWES TILLY A BEER! (I'll buy it. I love you, Tilly.)

I'm really glad we got another reference to Tilly's sociability. I really missed the Tilly that played beer pong with Rhys last season.

Since Control got destroyed they didn't really need to go to the future, but that is what the plot required (aligning with canon, etc).

I thought this at first, too. But during the inquiry scene at the end, there's this bit of dialogue:

Ash: You eliminated Control? Entirely?
Starfleet Officer: We have.

Which implies that Enterprise destroying Leland and his ships didn't in fact eliminate Control entirely. I would suggest that especially given Control's insidious nature, the only true protection against its destructive power was still to remove the Sphere data from the 23rd century.

Edit: Also, the officer interrogating everybody is played as overly cocksure, at least to my eye/ear. His performance screams, "We totally don't have it eliminated; I just think we do!"

Well I'll up the ante:

Season 3 amended curve ball - Discovery finds itself in the Orville Universe and they encounter a humanoid automaton species who's first contact words are "All this has happened before and all this will happen again!"

I was referencing a recurring Family Guy gag

One thing that's bugged me for awhile in the back of my head: how many people in Starfleet knew about the date of the Defiant? It always seemed incredibly weighty that someone in admiralty would have to decide the fateful last crew. But with Sec 31 all but gone or at least heavily modified, Discovery gone, and Admiral Cornwell dead, that might be the end of the intel on that particular knowledge. There's no one to stop Defiant from crossing over into the mirror universe, now.

Those looked like straight nacelle struts to me in the closing bit, bringing the discoprise closer to TOS. Explains the conflicting images from earlier in the year. More Eaglemoss models on the way ;)

And I'd definitely be up for a Pike spin off.

I went back and checked when they first showed the Enterprise in the spacedock, and it was the same struts.

I can just imagine the feeling of waiting nine months for a ship that you find out apparently never existed at all, nossir.

Yeah, NO.
TOS was great but DISCOVERY is also great.
Nothing DISCOVERY has shown us "tramples" on anything from TOS.
In fact, DISCOVERY has added to the tapestry of TOS in huge ways.

And that's coming from an Original viewer and hardcore believer of TOS.
I'm a HUGE TOS fan, and I totally agree. When I rewatch TOS from here on out, Discovery will have added to it. That's been a really cool aspect of Discovery, particularly the second season. Like you, I certainly don't feel like anything has been trampled on.

Maybe someone with greater film experience can weigh in, but this episode looked really expensive. There seemed to be a marked difference between the refinement of some of the space shots in this one versus last week's, not to mention the sheer number of VFX shots, the complex sets (the rotating corridor, for instance), and the number of practical effects. I assume more money and time was allotted here, no? This looked really, really good--possibly more polished than Brother.

And as a huge not-TOS fan, I can tell you that Discovery has significantly raised my interest in it. I find the additions to Spock's character to be extremely compelling and fresh. Suddenly, I'm having fun watching TOS. Disco has made TOS new for me, and that's really cool too.

A couple other assorted observations:
  • Wilson Cruz knocked it out of the park this season with his performance. The subtle nonverbal stuff he does in his scene over Stamets in sickbay is wonderful.
  • All hail the rotating hallway set!
  • The music during Michael's first wormhole jump was fantastic, I thought. I also loved that it wasn't an easy trip, but painful and wonderful by turns. Some great physical and digital elements here, too.
  • Wonderful symmetry in having a season that began with a sister's point of view and mission log ended with a brother's POV and log.

And, sad as it was, Admiral Cornwell died heroically, saving the Enterprise.
She died of stupidity. As I wrote earlier. Why didnt she tie a chord to the emergency bulkhead handle and stand on the safe side of the door and pull the handle down via the cord? Oh Discovery, the suit only had power for 1 jump into the future, but somehow it made 5 back to back jumps back in time, 1 forward jump with Discovery in tow, and then was able to do one more jump backwards in time to the present just as a signal to everyone we be ok now that were stuck in the future.

Why still go to the future even though Control was neutralized? Because Michael was going to go find her mom no matter what! And they had no way of knowing that Control-infused Leland was the only manifestation of Control around.

I gave this a 9. It was a blast to watch, though the ending left me with a sense of unease. But I guess that was the idea.

I wonder how Starfleet will go from talking about making Section 31 more transparent, to driving it (back) underground.

I'm not sure how I feel about the characters in the 23rd century no longer acknowledging that Michael and Discovery even existed. Wasn't Michael infamous throughout Starfleet as the scapegoat for starting the Klingon War? Won't people still remember her?

The space battle was spectacular. And I loved the visuals during Michael's journey to plant the signals.

The council member doing the debriefing at the end was played by Thom Marriott, in case anyone was wondering what the rest of his face looks like. ;)

  • Agreed. Definately. He's a not so hidden gem in this show now, and they did well to make sure he returned.
  • I almost thought they were going to play that Edith Piaf tune in the background.
  • I loved that. Her jumps reminded me a bit of those in the movie Contact. These were some of the best effects ive seen in Trek, period. Where was this FX team last season?
  • Agreed

optimism!

That's not a curveball. That's a wild pitch that hits the umpire in the crotch
a pitch hitting the umpire in the crotch would be a strike tho. Seen it happen on a 'mix-up' with the catcher thinking it was a pitch-out so he jumped outside the strike zone to get a pitch and the pitcher threw a normal pitch.

Would the cord then impede the 100% seal on the bulkhead? But the thing I didn't get. The torpedo going off is enough to destroy the ship(or a huge chunk of the ship), but standing a few feet away behind the door at ground zero is complete ok.

Maybe make your entire ship out of those damn doors then.

Anyone else wonder where and how Section 31 got such a huge fleet of ships when Starfleet was decimated by the war?
