S1 was awesome, S2 is a yawn fest

We need a show which will really upset the pearl clutchers.

You will never get that from CBS. Star Trek is a cash-cow and they aren't going to do anything to upset that. So it'll be nice and safe TV for the masses.

I'm a bit surprised how much that word is thrown around even on basic cable these days. The Magicians (on SyFy channel) uses "fuck" at least 5 or 6 times (or more) every episode. Mr. Robot on USA also uses it relatively regularly.

We've come a long way from the old day when when the f-word on TV was only ever heard on HBO and other premium premium channels.

I never said they did. But the word autistic does have a medical definition that exists independent of either of our experiences.

Since you don't know my experiences, I'm not sure why you're making an assumption that I don't know what I'm talking about.

Friendly warning to anti-profanity dudes: There was profanity in tonight's episode
Pike said shitstorm
.

Did he say it naturally or was it forced?

There are hardly any risks taken from the writers or producers. And the constant pandering to the fans seldom makes for good TV.

And yes, it is a lot more episodic than S1, which in this day and age should be a disqualifier for any decent show.
Tomato, tomahto. What you see as "risks taken" in S1, I see as "pulling dumb plot contrivances out of their ass," and what you see as "pandering to the fans" in S2, I see as "remembering the deep heritage of Trek material and themes available to build on."

As for serialization, while many of my favorite shows are serialized, that's not true of all of them, and they don't all approach story arcs in the same way. Saying a show must be serialized to be decent is ridiculous; creativity shouldn't be slave to any particular format.

Why not have a trek meets game of thrones?
Something more action packed, more blood/gore, more horror etc etc, see where i am going with this.
I love Game of Thrones. Interestingly, though, the aspects of it you call out (the action, blood, gore, horror) are usually my least favorite aspects of the show. What I really love about it is the slow-build plot development; the complex, psychologically rich characterization; the intricate political maneuvering. Sadly, most of these aspects have diminished considerably and been supplanted by more of the aspects you hail since the showrunners moved past GRRM's published material and started exerting more control over the tone of the show.

So, honestly, I'd love to see a Trek show done with the sophistication of Game of Thrones. (Or even the sophistication of Babylon 5.) I just think doing that right would involve raising the IQ level of the writing, not displaying more viscera on screen.

So Section 31 is Torchwood?
:rommie:

If it's half as good as Torchwood, we'll have quite a show on our hands. Of course, in my mind, none of the post-Enterprise stuff, DISCO-verse or otherwise, rises to the same level as Doctor Who in terms of enjoyment.

But that's just me.

I think it would be fun if they actually said things like "Oh shit, here's these fucking Klingons acting up again, open a fucking channel, let's hear what they want this time"
Lorca, channeling Samuel L. Jackson: "What's up with these motherfucking Klingons on this motherfucking starship?!"
Better yet, just have Samuel L. Jackson himself be the captain. Wouldn't be his first science fiction gig.

The Red Angel is Amy Pond.
She must have stolen River's vortex manipulator or something.

Again Tilly's "Fucking cool" just seemed to come out of nowhere, didn't honestly fit; and was just a writer saying to the audience "Hey look! We can say 'fuck' on air...neat huh?" and in that context I didn't care for it.
One seemed appropriate, the other "fucking cool" not. Not because of the words, but just how she said them. It really seemed like it was a "LOOK, WE CAN SAY FUCK NOW." Yanked me right out of the moment.
BINGO. That particular line had the feel of some random ten-year-old giggling because they realized their parents weren't around, so they could say bad words all they wanted. Okay idea, I guess. Far less than ideal execution.

Pike: Say fuck you, Spock.
Spock: Fuck you, Spock.
:guffaw:(I'm literally laughing out loud right now. At 0300. Sitting in bed. Thanks for that.)

Where you see 'spontaneous,' I see someone who is autistic. Persons with autism sometimes tend to say things that persons who don't have autism tend to find inappropriate.
Boy I've known a whole lot of people you would consider autistic (who aren't autistic by the way). Although they would throw around the word fuck more accurately than some people throw around the word autistic.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that--from the tone of this discussion--both of you are neurotypical (a.k.a. not autistic.) That's a guess from someone who actually is autistic, mind you.

I do agree that without Issacs it's missing something. Should have made him the lead.
What they should have done with him is make a New Frontier series, with him as Calhoun. :techman:

Real answer? Because I like Star Trek. If I want Game of Thrones, I can just watch Game of Thrones. I like the optimism and humanity that exists within Trek, there's not much like it on TV and I would hate to see it turned into another generic grimdark series.

Because that's not Star Trek. I'm all for realism and such, but you have to discard a whole lot of Trek in order to have a GoT style blood and guts type of show.

If we are talking about weaving a complex narrative with multiple characters and highly detailed world building I am all for it. However, I do not care for the ridiculous violence, depravity and macabre nature of that work in Star Trek.

If you want that it needs to be made outside of Star Trek. And would be for the best, in my opinion.

Space is big, very big.

There is room for all.

You can have two series.

One a light fluffy safespace eg TNG 2.0

AND

A more dark gritty series.

You can just choose to watch what one you want.

Season 2 is a vast improvement over Season 1 for me. Between a boring pilot, the ridiculous Mirror Universe plot and an absolutely batshit finale, I don't think time will be kind to S1.

Season 2 has its issues but is still a marked improvement. I wonder if there will be a rotating captain's chair for the rest of the series. That would actually be kind of cool.
