I don't know about anyone else, but if I walk into a lunch room, whether it is empty except for one person or full except for one person sitting alone at a particular table, I am not going to make any assumptions whatsoever.

I am not going to assume that people are avoiding that person.

I am not going to assume that the person desires to be alone.

I am not going to assume that the seats are reserved.

I am going to ask a polite question or two.

I am reminded of a story that one of my old college profs used to tell. The college had invited Richard Adams, author of 'Watership Down' to speak at a dinner that was hosted. None of the students would sit at the same table as him. He couldn't understand why and lamented to the prof, "But, I'm a nice guy!" The prof had to explain to him that it was a relatively small town and the students were so intimidated by his celebrity status that they couldn't work up the courage to sit at the same table with him.

Season Two isn't over, of course, and the ending too might miss the mark, but it does feel more Trek to me in a lot of ways. But as should be, having its own spin on the idea.
Except for very brief moments, season one didn't feel like Trek at all to me. I was mostly bored as a result. How times have changed! (I'm not referring to all the TOS references this season, since I have no emotional attachment to TOS.)

I liked how the episode ended with a standard Star Trek ending: slowly leaving orbit of a planet and going to warp. I don't think there have been many endings like that for Discovery,
And it was a visual callback to Voyager's opening titles. :luvlove:

Picard wouldn't have stood for that crap...
He wouldn't have let it continue, but I don't think he would have thought less of either Culber or Tyler for it. After all, he knows what it's like to both have your identity stolen from you and being forced to participate in atrocities, and he also remembers how he acted towards his tormentors in First Contact.

Nothing says they’re being run by contro
Might be, or might not. Too early to tell. The more that's revealed, the more I'm beginning to think DSC might just be referencing the novel, though.

I finally caught up with this show today, I watched three episodes in a row.

This one was an absolute blast, I loved the callbacks, and it all really worked. I also have to say that Peck's take on Spock is really good he already feels much more like Spock than Quinto ever did.

That being said, it starts to feel kinda crowded character wise, I think Pike and his crew should get their own show.

(The Kelpien episode was really good too, I guess there was one episode between them, but it was forgettable.)

In any case, I think this season has shown that Discovery really works well when they just do proper Trek; mystery of the week stuff. Whilst serialisation of the character development is certainly a good thing, I think the serialised aspects of the story are actually the weakest aspects of the season. S31 is awkward and unnecessary, and I'm still worrying how they gonna wrap up the Red Angel thing, not to mention the spore drive. Oh well, I've been positively surprised by this season, so I guess I can hope for a miracle in those areas as well, and it all will be worth it in the end.

I gave this episode a "9." My highest rating yet for a Discovery episode. It covered a lot of ground and did it well.

I also think this episode highlights some of the season's weaknesses as well. The writing of the Michael Burnham and Ash Taylor for one and two. There seems to be a bumpiness to it. Burnham seems to go obstinate to empathic almost whimsically. As if they started this season with no fixed vision therefore they use her (and Ash) to be whatever it is they need in the moment as dictated by the plot. One minute Ash is on Team Discovery next he is Team Section 31 depending on whether the scene needs a surrogate protagonist or not. It feels rough sometimes.

Minor complaint: this season did go take too long teasing the Spock storyline. Should have gotten into it at about 4 or 5 episodes back.

Another nitpick: Shuttles having transporters strikes me as anachronistic.

I loved the way Culber-Stamets relationship is unfolding. Whether they end up together or not isn't the point (though I hope they would). I voiced my dislike of them just magically bringing Culber back because at some point things have to start having a sense of meaning and permanence. This latest episode has me walking back my criticism as there is a price being paid by the two characters. Paul Stamets is now in the position of trying to make a square peg fit a round hole and Hugh Culbar is trying to figure out who he is (someone here hypothesized that this doctor may be one from another reality - that would make sense).

Captain Christopher Pike is fantastic. This episode made me a bit sad as it can't help but foreshadows his fate (the happiness of which is debatable). I thought Saru's handling of the Ash-Culber confrontation was spot on however I think this is also meant to help foreshadow the curse of the Kelpians - violent rage.

The reason for the Spock-Burnham falling out was a bit thin, however, I like the reveal that Spock was using Michael all along to get to Talos IV.

I like the way Empress Georgiou is manipulating her way up the ranks of Section-31. No doubt she will eventually become it's leader (Michelle Yeoh makes my aging heart palpitate - just saying).

All in all, best episode so far this season.
