Personally I'm hoping they keep continuity porn to an absolute minimum. Given the names involved and the evidence of Discovery, that's probably a vain hope, but I would love it if this series was pretty independent, and minimised "hey remember this?!" and gratuitous cameos. I know this comparison keeps being made, but something like Logan which is clearly set in the established universe but you only see two characters we know.

If it absolutely had to have another established character, Guinan would be my choice as she has a personal connection to Picard himself. Although the fact that the seemingly near immortal Guinan now looks like a twenty years older Whoopi Goldberg might take some explaining.

"Once our species hits 700 years old, aging process accelerates" Done, explained it in a one-liner.
But Guinan wouldn't be the first (or in the top 10) of the people I would like to see from TNG-era making a cameo.
    In no particular order:
    1. Worf (Most likely cameo too)
    2. Riker (Just as likely as #1)
    3. LaForge (Only if he gets to roll around on the floor as the door is coming down)
    4. O'Brien (Because Colm Meaney would be fun)
    5. Beverly Crusher (former/current love interest?)
    6. Wesley Crusher (It would have to be pretty cool story to introduce him)
    7. Sela (definitely with the whole Romulan story arc I could see it working)
    8. Janeway (Because it would just work)
    9. Ro Laren (If anything BSG showed is that Michelle Forbes is a kick ass sci-fi actress)
    10. Robin Lefler (Ashley Judd still got it!)

Honestly, I can't see anyone on that list who I would like to see again. Least of all Worf - if anyone's story has had enough airtime, it's his.

This is kind of why I would like them to stay away from doing it. It just becomes a stunt which will distract from the story. One group of fans will be all 'Yay!' and talk about nothing else, another will be all 'Boo!' and talk about nothing else. I'd like the show to generate discussion from its content.

Well they shouldn't be featured. A brief cameo wouldn't take away from the new content, while acknowledging to existing fanbase that it's an in the same universe as the previous Trek shows they all loved. Think Janeway cameo in Nemesis, it was short and sweet and to the point. A few more like that in STD2 wouldn't be too much or too bad.

I would really enjoy seeing Ro again. She's a great actress and a great character that left too soon. Plus she's a younger generation officer who could be at the height of her career at this point and Picard was basically her mentor. And Stewart had more chemistry with Forbes than he did with any of the regulars. If she fits the story, please go ahead!

For the rest... eh, put Janeway or Riker on the viewscreen for 30 seconds if you must but I really don't need to see anyone else.

I'd be fine with cameos. Hell, I'd be fine with using Short Treks to tell little "epilogues" to many of the characters at the time of show, even if they don't directly tie in.

But given what's now leaked about the show, it's pretty clear that Picard is retired from Starfleet and doing something else - possibly archaeology. Depending upon how he left Starfleet, there even might be some wounds with some of his old friends. But even if he's still chummy with all of them, they're likely mostly high up in Starfleet now, and not going to get leave to go on some sort of Gambit-style adventure with Jean Luc just because he asks.

Ro went Maquis though. That means most likely she was killed by the Dominion when they were finally crushed in 2373.

I suppose it's possible she's out there - IIRC the former Maquis members who survived were offered general amnesty - but I can't see her becoming a high-ranking officer given her suspect past.

That's over 25 years in-universe. If they want to they can easily bring her back, she could have been captured, served time in federation prison, came out, redeemed herself and could be a captain by now. Plenty of time for character development...

If they show B4(i.e. Data) they can always explain Brent Spiner's aging in-universe as flaws in the android body itself, and since B4 was considered to be the most flawed and failed Soong android to begin with(hence why he was discarded in the first place to make way for Lore and then Data) it shouldn't be too hard to explain away Spiner's having aged at least seventeen years between NEM and the Picard series. Data was already starting to show the signs of biological aging as early as FC.

That's what happens when you have a theoretically immortal android being played by a mortal actor. ;)

Don't mind a passing reference to an "Admiral Riker", or how Picard lost his wife in the supernova (or aftermarth) while she was busy doctoring on Romulus. If the character reports are right I expect mention of Data, and B4, maybe even Lore, Maddox, Soong or Graves in the name of a report or on screen graphic.

In season 3 or so I'd be happy to even see one or two, but it would have to be a good storyline - More "Sarek", less "Relics".

It's been nearly 20 years since Riker left Picard though - that's more time than passed with Picard. Geordi may well have stuck with Picard. Crusher perhaps if they got married, but Nemesis was 7 years after Attached

I've never quite got the infatuation with Yar either -- Picard was her C.O for 6 months. Sure in season 2 it may have been a little raw,

I don't count Q or Guinan in those though - those relationships are much more personal.

If they use it. They may simply decide to take the creative route and explain that B4 has experienced some problems with his epidermal layer and programming during his adjustment period of incorporating all of Data's old memories and behavioral patterns, or not even mention it at all.

Frankly if they didn't even mention it I don't think most fans would care. After all it is B4 now and not Data's old android body.

I wouldn’t be shocked at a Frakes appearance, though a comment above suggests a tidier way to do that: Short Treks. The existence of that show really does allow the producers to give some closure to characters that previously didn’t get it, in a way that wouldn’t intrude on the new shows. In fact, the more I consider that, the more it seems like a no brainier and perfect way for CBS to keep Trek fans onboard and interested in CBSAA and the other Trek shows.

Cut the cord between Short Treks and ongoing Trek shows (to a certain degree), and use the format to literally tell any kind of standalone stories in the Trekverse that may or may not also help put some closure to characters that didn’t get it, or show us a glimpse of their lives/adventures after their respective shows/movies ended.

This Picard show will inevitably raise questions about the TNG characters, so it seems a logical move to use Short Treks to answer them.

According to the novels, she joined the Bajoran Defence Forces after the Maquis were done. Bajor joins the Federation, BDF is absorbed by SF and boom: Ro Laren is in Starfleet again. Seems a perfectly logical pathway to me.

Mind you she could just as easily not be in Starfleet. She's got decades to develop into whatever role the writers choose for her.

Some cameos are mandatory. Hell, I would be grateful even for Weasley...
