Star Trek Discovery Renewed For Season 3

It's interesting, because I've always (first run and after many re-watches) found Duet and Measure of a Man to be horrifically over-rated installments, despite recognizing that I'm in the vast minority in that opinion.

I agree with you, but then I don't think Treachery, Faith and the Great River and Tin Man aren't as appreciated as they should be.

I’m not sure if that is more the fault of the actor, writers or director (probably a bit of all them).

Martin-Green can only do what she can do with the material they hand her. A lot of it has been cringe worthy.

Tin Man falls apart for me due to how mercilessly unlikable and unsympathetic Tam is. When you spend the whole episode hoping the creature eats the protagonist, it's not a good sign.

That's probably because you're thinking of Tam as the protagonist in the story. He, as well as the giant space pinecone are the problem. I get it that broken people aren't very likeable. That's not what they are supposed to be in the context of this kind of story.

It's both, as I said in the other thread, Burnham is a complete fail as a character, she's a gimmick that doesn't work because of the very nature of the show and on top of that is hilariously poorly written (like Discovery in general) which just leads her to becoming basically an overpowered Mary Sue.

She's a human raised on Vulcan which explains why she's awesome at literally everything because, Vulcans are smarter and stronger than humans and Burnham was the highest ranked ever graduate out of the Vulcan science academy, so she's better than even all the Vulcans ever, but the writers would "balance" this (if they ever could) with the fact she's basically a Human pretending to be a Vulcan so she doesn't have good impulse control because humans are naturally emotional (Just ignore that Vulcans have far stronger natural emotions than humans and it's their training that allows them to suppress emotion but whatever) and this is what would cripple her along with being unable to connect with any other crew member. But even with this, okay if she's a secondary character in an ensemble whatever.

The problem is then they built a Drama TV show around this single character who is supposed to be the complete emotional crutch of the thing and Discovery isn't just Drama, it's like soap opera level melodrama at 110% always so Burnham is never an unemotional, purely logical Vulcan in this show, she's just another extremely melodramatic human like the rest of the cast, except as well she's overpowered to just absurd levels because essentially "Half-Vulcan" which allows her to be impulsive unlike a Vulcan and be super awesome hence why Burnham constantly pulls off insanely impossible shit like that eye rolling asteroid field sequence and basically solves literally every single thing on the show, even when other characters do "solve" something, it's Burnham that spells it out to them in the first place.

Another thing is, SMG just can't act as a Vulcan for shit, her "Vulcan" mode is to just do a stupid strained face like she's constipated and then talking with the intonation of a voice over in a movie trailer in this weird whispery voice which no Vulcan talks like ever. She overacts in this weird goofy way everywhere. I have no idea why people think she's a good actress, she was terrible in The Walking Dead and terrible here.

I love it when people feel the need to go way over the top when making a critique. It shows exactly how much of their posts are entertainment (110% or so) and how much they need to be taken seriously.

More Burnham "Mary Sue" bullshit...smdh.

Oh, someone brought up Mary? I tuned out when I read “failed as a character.”

I have no problem with people being critical of something I enjoy. I truly enjoy reading some criticisms around here. @BillJ comes to mind with Disco. But there just comes a point in time when I tune out criticism. Being critical is one thing. Being over the top about it is something different.

Picard getting mind raped and getting a lousy flute does nothing for me. :techman:

I'm gonna have to side with BillJ here. At least on "The Inner Light". I know it's a "good" episode, but... on the other hand, "Lessons" was a great sort-of follow-up. It got to me in a way "The Inner Light" didn't for some reason. You really feel for Picard at the end.

"The Visitor" gets me though. I can't help it.

I agree with you, but then I don't think Treachery, Faith and the Great River and Tin Man aren't as appreciated as they should be.

I agree with you about "Treachery, Faith, and the Great River". I don't think I should weigh in on the other episode.

She's as close to a Mary Sue as you will get in a professional production. The same with Wesley Crusher in the first few seasons of TNG (being a literal self insert of Roddenberry).

Burnham literally has the same backstory as Lt. Mary Sue. She's overpowered to just insane levels, she's a Mary Sue character.

I'm not even being over the top. Everything I stated happens in the show. She solves basically EVERYTHING (there is a youtube video of her solving pretty much everything in every episode). She engages in constant insanely impossible feats, characters that belittle her literally die in awful ways. It's stated she got record marks at the Vulcan Science academy.

I do love how though "Well you're just being over the top" is used to just completely ignore criticisms of Burnham and her writing. Gotta love that tone policing.

She's overpowered to just insane levels,
yeah, remember that episode when she went super saiyan?
me neither

so, she's basically Kirk.
or Spock.
or Data.
or Picard.

Yeah it's funny how those characters never get accused of being Mary Sues when they are the best pilot ever and beat up Klingons and have super historical knowledge and can do math like a computer...I wonder what makes her different from them.....

I will explain why I used the term 'over the top' with this clause of yours.

She engages in constant insanely impossible feats.

Honestly, all that is all that needed to be said here to get your point across is what I edit below, even though I have yet to see her do anything over the course of the series that I would call "impossible" in context, and would wonder what she has done you have seen which is insanely impossible, let alone constantly, which would suggest she performs an impossible feat in every or almost every scene we see her in.

This pretty much gets the message across:

She engages in impossible feats.

Do you see what I am saying?
