Pike let Saru be a dick for waaaaay too long. This was a very tense, sensitive, and unknown situation. No way it was appropriate for him to hijack that comms discussion, and even worse that Pike let it go.

Yeah, this was a problem. I think things are going to continue to get worse for Saru. They basically now have a teenager as First Officer.

I figured before something would have to eventually happen with Saru to make him not fit to be Captain Material, so that job can ultimately go to Burnham, but I didn't think this was the route they'd take. I thought him being too fearful would keep him from becoming a good Captain. I like being kept on my toes like this.

Hitting the instant-puberty button on the Kelpians seemed extraordinarily cavalier and knee-jerky. Like, "Kirk blowing up Vaal" levels of irresponsibility. It just didn't feel like it was well-considered enough to be a realistic solution to a very complex problem and long-standing planetary history.

I'm hoping this is just the set-up for something else and not where that particular story ends. The Kelpians are free from the Ba'ul's control over them, but now what?

While I do agree that Saru would probably not be captain material at this point, I'm not sure that I find Saru to really be teenager-like now. I think he's just beginning to realize his full potential after being held down for so long. He's already experienced plenty of negative thoughts and emotions because of his past, but seems to be able to experience much more positive ones now.

I never saw him as Captain material as he was. he was more reminiscent of 'passive' Kirk from The Enemy Within. If anything his Pokemon Evolution to the next level as given him a booster from 'agressive' Kirk. I finally could see him as Captain for the first time this ep.

I don't think that's the way they're going at all. I expect to see Captain Saru and XO Burnham for at least a season, maybe longer before Burnham actually gets command.

This is just a speed bump/character building exercise that's ultimately going to make Saru a more well-rounded captain in the end by removing his fear instinct and giving him plenty of time (while Pike is still in charge) to reign his new instincts in to a more reasonable level.

I can see Saru becoming an antagonist later on with this new behaviour. I doubt he will be a captain.

Did anyone else notice that Saru, once ordered off the bridge, leaves via a side door but when inside the lift, the camera cuts showing the window behind him meaning he's in the rear lift?

now i need to check that - grrr !!

Just rewatched the scene. Saru is in front of the Captain's chair when Pike shoos him off the bridge. Saru turns around, walks past the chair and into the rear center turbolift.

I reckon he'll get through Kelpian puberty at some point. Everything's a bit new.

It really looks to me as if he walks to the door on the right-front of the bridge?

I thought he was on a direct path to captain. i dont know that he'd necessarily be antagonist, but he may feel the need to be a peacemaker at home long term. he's learned a lot that would be vital to both species on kaminar

Doug Jones used the analogy that he's just turned 18 and can now suddenly vote, drive, drink (in some countries 18 is the age), watch porn (I loled at this part) etc. But he's still having to live with his parents and abide by their rules. There's tension because of that.

There is going to have to be an adjustment period. Obviously he can't be having more outbursts on the bridge or challenges to Captain Pike's decisions.

Doug hints that Saru will eventually settle down and will have a different perspective in terms of what's possible for command. He's already shown some great leadership skills and stepped up to the plate when needed. Now over-caution, second-guessing himself or paranoia will not govern his decisions as much as they might have done before.

I think it would be good to see Saru working through the process.

Doug Jones is one of the show's greatest assets, and Saru is possibly the most universally liked character. He's certainly got the most interesting arc, IMO. I don't think they'll make him too nasty or antagonistic -- I can't see him leaving the crew more than temporarily.

Ambassador Saru does have a good sound to it. hell, he could be pres of the ufp way down the line

Finally got the time to watch it. Gave it a 5.

I quite liked the Kelpians story but there were a couple of things that almost made the episode unbearable:

1. SMG's acting was the worse, it was distracting. Ok her lines were quite cliche (she does get the worst lines of dialogue or annoying monologues) and she was baaad. Could be the director..which bring us to...
2. The Camera work, especially when on Discovery. WTH? What its the point of filming it like if the action takes place in a boat on a rough sea? I got motion sickness for the first time ever watching TV.

I find it so silly that every time someone says something important on the bridge, the crew turn their heads and look at each other in awe. Sitcom style of directing!

Tyler suddenly being cynical/sceptical/31ical is weird.

Stemats smiling like an idiot while his resurrected soulmate was in distress was..awkward..

Doug Jones is amazing, they still need to tone down his make up. I noticed his "sister" had less prosthetics. Maybe they are going there for Saru as well?

Overall so far, I am not really impressed with S2. The start was great and made me Star Trek giddy again, but the last 3-4 episodes were so and so. DSC/STD/DISCO still seems lost and confused even if better than S1.
