I've been replaying the Mass Effect game trilogy lately, and this episode reminded me a lot of the genophage story in the games. Both involve a physically weaker but more technologically advanced species imposing something on a more primitive and aggressive species that will limit their population size without simply killing them off.

Iconians, Preservers, Ferengi, The Albino, Armus...I sure hope the showrunners are actually less obsessed with finding/making connections than the fan theorists are.
Absolutely. Building themselves up for incalculable disappointment.
I don't see why. It's only natural to seek out patterns between different related things, and the showrunners have said that an existing species from a past series will make its return on DSC, so it's not unreasonable to speculate on that. It won't be a disappointment to me in any way if it doesn't turn out to be any of the above, though (although I wasn't a proponent of the Ferengi thing, since I didn't see the connection there at all). And there's nothing wrong with making such connections on the show as long as it doesn't take greater emphasis over good storytelling.

But I can certainly see why people are making the connections to the...
Iconians
- the ancient "demons of air and darkness" that can show up anywhere at any time and have bio-mechanical-like suits and wings according to the STO version.
Preservers
- the ancient race that plucks dying populations from their worlds and transplants them to other idyllic locations and provides means of protecting them from asteroid impacts. The obelisk connection to the Ba'ul was also strong before this episode.
The Albino
- The albino Klingon-looking outcast with a grudge against the Klingon Empire and a specific beef with the House of Kor.
Armus
- The malevolent tar creature who speaks with a raspy voice that was the remnant of the negative and evil thoughts of its parent species (perhaps the Ba'ul created the tar as some sort of semi-sapient/sentient psychological weapon to increase their aggressiveness to defeat their Kelpian hunters, and then discarded it when no longer necessary sometime after the events of this episode).

That's not just pulling connections out of nowhere. It probably won't turn out to be right or even acknowledged in most cases, but it's fun to speculate.

This one is a very superficial resemblance. But the writers of the episode were actually asked about it:

Wow! They’re damn near identical! If the red angels are Preservers, now I’m wondering if the Ba’ul coopted some of their tech to subjugate the Kelpians and the angels are trying to fix things that they screwed up millennia ago.

I’m really loving this mystery they’re setting up between all these different unexplored concepts that were merely hinted at in TOS. Maybe we’ll finally see how all the parallel/geographically identical Earth’s that Enterprise encountered were massive Preserver constructs (Magrathea-level tech) as places to put transplanted humanoid colonies.

They might have built planets. The Kalandans were capable of building planets and transporting stuff across the entire galaxy.

Good episode, worth every minute of the length. (Though I'll agree with many that some of the Ba'ul's inactions were tough to justify.)

After seeing the strong connection between the Short Trek episode and this one, I definitely look forward to seeing what other connections we'll get to the other 3 Short Trek episodes this season. (Though obviously it won't be the exact same for all 4. And maybe the Harry Mudd one was more connected to season 1 than anything in season 2. We'll see.)

I think the Culber story is going to have a sad ending for Stamets. Quite simply, that's not Culber. That's a new being with his memory and DNA, but he's not the same person. A little bit like the 2 Rikers on TNG. And like that second Riker, I think the answer will be that he needs to go off and discover who he is. Because if he sticks around, he's going to be molded into being exactly what Stamets wants him to be. Maybe transfer to the Orville or something like that. (I think we can all agree that Culber has no business associating with Section 31, so let's hope that's not part of the plan.)

The Ba'ul are creepy! They do remind me of Armus but I guess it's just a coincidence. This episode was good. I enjoyed Saru but Pike stole the show again. Give him his own show already!

The apology tour after they killed Culber all but guarantees they end up together, IMO. There may be some bumps along the way, but the writers have locked themselves into a box, which is another reason it was silly to kill Culber in the first place.

Although I found the predator-turned-prey-turned-predator twist very interesting, I was put off just a tad by the Baul pool entity just disappearing or no other slimies slithering in to try and get control of Saru and sister. But I guess after witnessing the head darts and super strength, they simply decided "check please". It strikes me that this season will be more rewatchable than season 1, as fun as that one was, probably for lack of really knowing who the Red Angel is, while as wonderfully scenery chewing as he was, Lorca was obviously not of the prime Federation universe. So a solid 9 from me again, at the 9.3 or 9.4 level, with Spock on the horizon!

Re: the redressed set...

It's just more evidence that there is some galactic "Acme Corp." behind the scenes, selling equipment to all the technologically advanced species of the galaxy. It explains why the major powers had such similar ship interiors in TOS (right down to the red hex grating), why Eminian sonic disruptors were so similar to Klingon guns, why the refit Enterprise's torpedo bay looked like a poorly disguised Klingon battle cruiser bridge, and why a Romulan drone ship from the 22nd century was also in use by some Delta Quadrant species two hundred years later.

This Acme Corp. is heavily involved in galactic trade, but they're really secretive when it comes to direct contact. So that's why we never, ever see or hear anything from them.

Interesting that they are taller than in TOS....although that was only one. Here is the one from DSC:

Obelisk.png

So Galactic Acme Corp sold these big hollow obelisks to both the Preservers and the Ba'ul to use for ship hulls, guard sentries, or whatever. One of these two civilizations doesn't realize they're using the obelisks upside down, and nobody has the heart to tell them.

As much as I want to connect the pylons with the Preservers obelisks, part of me can't help to think that someone on the production staff just said, 'hey let's just turn the obelisk model from Michael's spore jump scene upside down and recolor it, that'll save us some time. I don't think we used it anywhere else so far.'

I'm 50/50 on that, because sometimes that's just how productions do things. In fact, if I were working on this show and someone brought up, 'But you know the fans, they'll notice it right away and start talking about it,' I'd simply cackle and say, 'I know.'

I liked their design a whole bunch. We've come a long way from the forehead aliens. I'm not knocking those; I know why they did that back in the day, and I'll be the first to jump to ENT's defence. But it's awesome to see a show with a big budget getting creative with different life-forms. I thought those upside-down obelisks were menacing and gave off a really alien vibe. But you know me; I'm always happy.

that makes sense to me. They could also have decided it would be a fun red herring to throw in as well.
