Love this episode.

Left field theory: Ba'ul = Shelliac?

They could have, perhaps, run away from Kamanar and changed their identity to hide from the Kelpians.

In this latest episode the Discovery, with help from the Red Angel, goes out of it's way to violate the Prime Directive so they can stop the Ba'ul from killing the Kelpiens.

But for all their shared efforts they just temporarily disabled the Ba'ul stronghold and left the Ba'ul space fleet completely untouched. Which means there's nothing stopping the Ba'ul from repairing their stronghold and wiping the Kelpiens out or using their rather impressive space fleet to wipe the Kelpiens out.

Oh I know full well what I would have done. I wondered if the Kelpians would take over that ship now since it has gone dark. Where the heck did the gooey aliens go?

I vaguely remember the name Shelliac, remind me again which series they were from and what they were like?

TNG, The Ensigns Of Command. A powerful xenophobic race that had a treaty with the Federation to require them to 'Remove the human infestation'. They were also gooey black thingies that talk in a similar manner.

Also, anyone a video game fan and suddenly associating the Red Angel with Xenogears?

I don't know if this is definitely what will happen, but I am waiting for the other shoe to drop. A high-tech society waging war on a no-tech society doesn't look good for the Kelpians. Unless they have another trick up their sleeves, such as rediscovering various lost abilities and knowledge. Quickly.

Ta thanks guys. Interesting idea here that they become the Sheliak.

I'm late to the party.

Gave it a 9. It's a Voyager/Enterprise 10, though. Discovery just keeps setting the bar higher.

Loved the story, I liked how the answer going forward will be finding some new kind of balance, even if it takes decades. The Red Angel mystery is getting more interesting. I am so glad they are dealing with Culber transitioning back to life and not just doing the usual trek reset button on him.

TylerVoq continues to be a pimple on the butt cheek of life. I don't know why he's there. I don't know why we need to see him.

The VFX team should get credit for this one. The Ba'ul was truly creepy, and with a jaded audience that's not easy to do now. I liked their ship designs and aesthetics as well.

They changed the callsign on the shuttle from what it was in the Short Treks episode. In the short, it was "SHN 03" which implied it was from the Shenzhou, which would have meant Georgiou spent a huge chunk of her career on the Shenzhou. Now it just says "03," and is from the Archimedes.
Noticed that too. Made me go back and check to make sure I wasn't imagining it.

Clearly, it's a signal either that they don't give a flying frang about canon, or that they care about it so much that they're setting up a scenario of alternate timelines or shifting through parallel universes, or...something.:vulcan::rommie:

Some people on Twitter are worried reborn Culber lost his gayness along with his scars. I didn't get that vibe at all from the scene, just the standard sci-fi "back from the dead" existential crisis kicking in.
Certainly didn't get that impression either, but it did seem to me that conflict in his relationship with Stamets might well ensue, as Paul seems to be so (understandably) happy to have his partner back that he's overlooking or dismissing Hugh's obvious (and equally understandable) discomfort with what has happened to him.

The absence of the scar he had chosen to keep was a great little narrative device to illustrate this. (Also made me recall Zora's consideration in leaving Craft his in the "Calypso" short.)

I would normally just let this go with a verbal warning, but you already have a previous infraction for promoting piracy, so you should know better.

Infraction for promoting piracy. Comments to PM.
What do you mean? I downloaded it off the CBS All Access app which is a feature. The internet is temperamental where I am and so I prefer to DL it.

It's in the middle of an Ocean, has locked doors, is 50km across, and the Kelpians would have no clue how to run any of the systems.

So even assuming the Kelpians could somehow find their way to the stronghold and break in, there's no way they would be able to find their way to the command center before the Ba'ul bring the places system back online.

The Ba'ul have dozens of heavily armed ships 5+ times the size of Discovery in orbit over their planet.

Unless the Kelpians have god tier psychic powers, they're dead.

I think the Ba'ul are meant to be a unique species, new to Trek.

I strongly disagree that they resemble The Sheliak (or Armus, which is the other species ppl are latching on to.)

For example: The Sheliak look more like large crystalline rock creatures, almost like a darkish pyrite. Also they had a treaty with the Federation already in 2255 (this is 2257, I believe) and owned several worlds by that time. The Ba'ul are native to Kaminar and do not appear to have expansionist goals.

Armus' story is also very different - from Memory Alpha: Armus was born as a by-product or personification of a procedure in which a race of "Titans" brought out from within themselves all evil and negative attributes that had bound them to destructiveness. The unwanted substance spread and coalesced into a dank and vile second skin. The race rejected this "skin of evil" and abandoned it on the barren planet Vagra II in the Zed Lapis sector.

Lets compare visually:

The Sheliak

Armus the Skin of Evil

The Ba'ul

And for fun, here are the ship designs for the Sheliak vs Ba'ul.

Sheliak Colony Transport ship

Ba'ul Sentry ship

Ba'ul Stronghold 1
Ba'ul Stronghold 2
Ba'ul Stronghold 3

I'm really not seeing the resemblance or hints others are seeing.
