Captain Marvel (2019)

Yeah, he was great in Weeds.
As for who he might be playing, I don't really understand why they're being so mysterious about whether or not Mar-Vell is in the movie. I know he has his fans, but I don't see where him being in the movie, or not, would be that big of a deal.

People are talking about it, and when people talk about a movie, that's free marketing.

Well for one thing his presence may set certain expectations from fans as to his role and how the film will play out. If this is Marvel's Green Lantern type story, then Mar-Vell is their Abin Sur and all which that implies. If however (as I suspect) they're going a different route with Carol's story then they might not want to tip their hand too early. Mystery is a good thing after all! Some of my most enjoyable movie experiences are when I went in blind.

As for this actor specifically: perhaps this is a "Spider-Man in Civil War" type of thing. Where he's playing a fairly minor role in the story, but the character himself is kind of a big deal and they don't want to ruin the surprise.

Saw the teaser, though I'm not much of a comic book fan, though I enjoyed Superman and Wonder Woman. Xena too, but to my current understanding her origins were from an original 1990s TV show and not an adaptation from a comic strip - and if it was, then Lucy Lawless was quick to make Xena her own and enjoyably so. But is Captain Marvel supposed to be affectless when incognito, was Captain Marvel the same way in previous iterations? Were there any? Or is it the editing of the teaser solely to hand out to tightly clipped sentences?

Loved the meta joke about rubber suits - thank the 1990s for shifting superheroes out of spandex and into suits you don't want to sweat in because it'll smell real bad. Actually, those jokes are more likely going to take one out of the movie's universe. At least it's got good CGI.

Aren't there new characters they can make? Or is Xena the most recent attempt of a new hero that managed to become wildly successful in all its major forms (writing, acting, lowest common denominator audience appreciation)?

Geez Louise, we all knew this was gonna happen but I didn't think it would be THIS early...

Honestly, I'll never get where folks got the idea that she'd be this "One and only savior" for Endgame or that 1 movie about Carol would destroy the MCU. Haven't they learned after 10 years?!

I found a video, which links to an article, that might shed a belief on the "savior" motif. And if audiences are perceiving what Brie says as attacks, then is it surprising that the negative reviews would already be coming out onto that review site?

Anyway, here's the video I mentioned (from "Tha Gospel According to Mark with a Cee"):

That is terrible, but not really unexpected. All we can do is ignore them and go see the movie ourselves. It'll likely be number one in the box office and most will leave having enjoyed it, meaning these idiots will be the minority. An unfortunately vocal minority, but a minority nonetheless.

It's too bad that the MCU had not considered making Monica Rambeau as Captain Marvel. After all, it was willing to use Scott Lang as the current Ant-Man, instead of the first one, Hank Pym.

That was a holdover from Edgar Wright's script before the MCU even began, actually.

As for Monica, they're setting her up by having her mom be one of Carol's friends in the 90s. Which means Monica will be an adult 20 years later.

The kind of embargo they're slapping on reviews is usually a sign that the studio doesn't have a lot of confidence in the product.

Everything about this looks pretty cheesy so far.
And...?

Or that they have total confidence in a guaranteed audience and think it's better to build suspense and mystery then let details slip out through the press. But no, sure, I'm sure *this* is the one that's totally gonna sink Marvel. People have said that about every Marvel movie since 'Avengers', but *this* time it's for realsies!

You mean like say, using Carol Danvers; the current Captain Marvel instead of the first one Mar-Vell? :vulcan:

At this point Carol is probably the best known version of Captain Marvel to people outside the comics, so it makes sense she'd be the one they pick for the movie.
As for the trolls, I'm not surprised, but it does still frustrate me that there are people out there who have that kind of an attitude.

It’s standard up till a certain point. It’s supposed to end today so we should be getting early reviews soon.

Oh yeah, and I'd hate to think what would happen to someone who leaked anything from it.
Figure in Marvel's notorious secrecy, and there's nothing here that should surprise anybody.
Yeah, it's pretty much become standard practice as one of their ways to keep spoilers to a minimum.
