No that's not believable to me. They should go with the TOS regular crew size which is over 400. The Enterprise scale in this show is also much bigger than the ship in TOS. That does not work for me. I ding it for that.

No Season one was not ensemble for me. Not even a little. All those bridge officers in roll call should have had larger roles from day one. They are NOT random background extras and if they go back to being such I won't like this season much.

Nonsense....

The dialogue in The Cage establishes the crew compliment as 203. They should abandon that because....I don't know...reasons unknown? Nah....that's just bitching. If they gave another number m a bunch of picky fans would be crying about canon.

The main cast / characters of Discovery was Burnham, Stamets, Tyler, Lorca, Tilley. It wasn't the bridge extras with names. Does Star Trek TOS blow because Lt. Leslie didn't have a lot of lines?

I was more mad about Lieutenant Commander Giotto, security chief, not getting more of the lime light.

How was S1 not ensemble? Just because the random background extras didn't have lines?

dettmer alone had more lines than all the silent bridge crew combined in the last season. they didn't even 'aye sir' lorca much

If anything...DSC is cool for giving those supporting players who aren't part of the main ensemble more to do!

I think you should rewatch it without distractions.
I watched about 90% of the episode without distractions, and it's still laughably stupid eye rolling action schlock that mostly just comes off as a action sci-fi space opera that has little to do with Star Trek at all beyond aesthetics.

Phew...thank god most people disagree strongly with you !!
Most people are still in their "Woohooo pew pew bing bang" phase of seeing all the VFX. Remember most Trek fans jerked off over even Into Darkness for a few weeks until the action setpiece hype left their brains and they realised it was an atrociously terrible movie. In a few weeks I suspect most will come to the same conclusion with this. They fixed the tone of the show by making it more light hearted, they didn't fix the fact that all the characters come off as immature freshmen engaging in teenage level drama and the writing is blatantly there just to push towards another dumb action setpiece no matter how stupid and contrived.

"Lolol fuck orders, i'm going to do my own thing, I'm cooler than you all, my roommate also told BLAH"
Seriously how could any of you not roll your eyes at this stupid garbage?

You have your opinion and I have mine. My opinion is also shared by Trekyards and a few hundred people in the live chat. So whatever.

Exactly. It appears they have fixed this with season two. At least I hope so.

I think the show's opening credits are the primary clue on who is a main character. The opinions of Trekyards and people in live chat, not so much.

We all know who the main characters are. You are missing the point. Forget it.

come on, there ain't much of a second shift, is there? and having them just sitting around and say nothing wasn't all that normal - main cast or not, they are always on the bridge.

they could have had at least an 'aye sir' or somesuch. why hire an actress when the role of dettmer could have easily been filled by the auto pilot from airplane! in season 1?

Though I don't agree with him giving off Orville vibes -- Disco Pike isn't an Average Joe -- I do agree with the rest of what you say. Before, you've compared Pike in "The Cage" to Bruce Wayne and Batman. The Pike in Discovery reminds me more of Clark Kent and Superman.

In fact, given how dark DSC was and how bright TOS was, last year I was telling my brother about how Discovery running into the Enterprise was like a crossover between Batman and Superman. Not the shitty movie that came out a few years ago or whatever they're doing in the comics now (please no one update me, because I really don't care :p ) but a crossover between the Post-Crisis '80s/'90s comic book versions. That's my time. Or maybe Michael Keaton's Batman meets Christopher Reeve's Superman.

I agree with that. AnsonPike definitely had a Reeve Superman leadership vibe. But I prefer the angst-y Hunter Batman Pike TBH. Especially when you have someone like Boyce to balance him out...who's basically Alfred.

'What are we running here.. a cadet ship!?'

And interesting foreshadowing with that line.

Explain the point, if you please. What? That people who aren't main characters or part of the main cast should get storylines? In an arc driven season with only 13-15 episodes. Please tell me the point.

This is a Star Trek trope. Go look at TOS and TNG and tell me how many bridge extras who aren't part of the main cast don't sit around saying nothing.

Amazing levels of bullshit here folks.

so why not rotate them a bit? just to show that they are basicly irrelevant.

Why do that when showing some consistency adds continuity and realism to the proceedings?

People who don't like will find a reason to not like.

Shit, it's a real phenomenon.

in how many episodes do those bridge extras (who are not part of the main cast) appear - the ones we are talking about appeared in each and every episode so far
