No kidding. But it more than likely inspired the 'course correction' for Discovery. This episode definitely came off as very much aware of the complaints regarding S1. I wouldn't be surprised if the lighter direction was also a CBS mandate. They saw what worked elsewhere, and recognized what Discovery was lacking.

Reminds me of when WB decided to push 'fun' as their buzzword for the new DC films, after Batman V Superman disappointed. They saw what worked for Marvel and were reactionary.

They told the public it was considered successful. But this complete course correction and inclusion of Pike, Spock and the Enterprise shows that they wanted a new direction for the show. I don't buy into the PR spin.

Look at how abruptly the war arc was tossed under the rug. Look at all the internal changes behind the scenes with creatives coming and going. S2 is a new vision for the show that wasn't part of the original gameplan. But if you want to feel as though there was always a magical plan in place despite all these changing factors, your prerogative.

Personally, I don't take the statements from CBS or the producers at complete face value.

I don't think your overwhelming cynicism is very healthy.

Denial and rationalization are always so awesome.

Of course they considered it successful. They bullt a fucking franchise renewal off the results of S1. That's not to say that there isn't room and desire for continuous improvement. That's true and welcome for any series.

And as to the tonal shift, since they said that was the point of the war arc from day one, I will believe that. Thanks for acknowledging my perogative. I would have been stuck otherwise.

But give me a frigging break with this "they want to make it more like The Orville" stuff. That ain't it, my brother.

It's a necessary evil when it comes to corporate politics.

Oh believe me, I haven't been the only one making the comparisons.

I guarantee all the YT reviews will namedrop the Orville as inspiration for the tonal change, whether you agree with that assessment or not. I know Redlettermedia already feels this way.

So those pictures were from the Enterprise. I still makes me think of the sets shown in the live action Thunderbirds. The interior looks like Thunderbird 3. :)

Well it’s not a very good comparison as they’re noting alike.

Enterprise is still busted in this ep. Maybe they wanted to show off the bridge set with all the lights on later ;)

Yeah, that moment felt like The Orville. Luckily it was the only one. And the guy who that alien sneezed on died anyway. I love that they killed the Blue Shirt.

There was so much going on in this episode, I'm still unpacking all of it.

I noticed there was a mention of a mycelial connection at one point. Tilly said she hadn't seen anything like it since the tardigrade appeared.

Just finished it. They really picked an unfortunate day to air this with Grand Tour, Supernatural, Orville and this all in one day but I managed to see them all. I liked it but the humour seemed a bit off. There are many things I didn’t like about the first season (those bloody holograms for one) but the tone was not one of them. I just hope they don’t go too far with it.
Looking forward to seeing Spock but I don’t know if it will be fun without Kirk and McCoy. It was that trio that made the character work. Without him I don’t think he will be anything special.
Issacs is still missed though. I hope we don’t have to wait long until his return.
