Star Trek Discovery - Why So Many Vocal Haters?

Every time a Discovery trailer drops on Youtube, or an ad on Facebook the comments are filled up with "THIS SHOW KILLED STAR TREK" and "THIS IS NOT STAR TREK!!!!" type of comments.... but why? While it's far from perfect, Discovery definitely has a Trek feel to me, just a but updated (just like all the other shows) The writing quality seems to be higher than Enterprise to, so why the overwhelming hate?

Every Star Trek series and movie has had these people.

Just now there’s more opportunity for the haters to show their hate. Ie. Social media, YouTube, etc. Last time there was a new Star Trek series the internet wasn’t the same. If it was, every new show would have gotten the same reaction.

Because people are crazy insane.

It's hard for me to get worked up enough about DSC to hate.

I just wish it was somewhat charming.

As to why YouTube outrage has a shrieky tone, I mean why even ask that? Because it equals clicks. Not enough people click on thumbnails that say "Nuanced Discussion about Star Trek Without Much Rage or Passion."

Nothing new to Star Trek from TNG onward. Many of legitimate criticisms, such as not connecting with the characters, and others are more surface level. Some of them feel like this:

Ultimately, Star Trek means different things to different people so why worry about it?

I think posting this thread in this forum is kind of preaching to the choir. People posting in a Discovery forum probably don't hate Discovery... heh.

There's always been a crowd of people that hate anything that doesn't fit their notion of what Trek should be, going right back to the people who still loathe "The Wrath of Khan" or TNG. It's just easier for those people to be loud and vocal, and since Enterprise (remember what it was like here in those days?) there's the added fun of the alt-Nazi types who hate anything with women or minorities in it. You see the same people with Star Wars fandom - the new movies didn't fit their preferred version of the EU, which naturally ignored all the parts of it they didn't like, and there's some people who can't just say "eh, I wasn't my thing."

I think it's also spurred on, for both franchises, by a very vocal industry of outrage stokers. You've got a bunch of people on YouTube who put up these hours-long 'critique' hate sessions (which take even longer to make) or make up stuff like Midnight's Edge. They do it because it makes them good money to make people angry, and the angrier they make people the more they'll come back. Hence why they often throw in complaints about SJWs - triggering the alt-right fanboys guarantees more clicks, especially once the YouTube algorithm decides anyone who watches Trek-related videos should be linked to the hate vids.

Some otherwise mild-mannered folks overreact to a strong black female character

but also, Disco is a very different show from previous ones. Every trekker has has years to imagine the perfect show since Enterprise got cancelled, and odds are none of us got exactly what we were wanting for. Not everyone was going to like it, but the sheer hate poured on it (mild here.. loathesome elsewhere like youtube, whose comment section is generally a cesspool anyway) showed just how reactionary much of fandom had become. It was a learning experience.

Youtube commentary will always show a loud negative side, because the majority of channels discussing Discovery on YT on a regular basis lean Negative about the show;

- Redlettermedia
- Nerdrotic Channel
- Egotastic Funtime
- Midnight's Edge
- Dave Cullen Show
- Generation Tech
- Doomdick
- Bowlestrek
and more.

Angry Joe gave it a semi-positive review and got a lot of dislikes.

Also, Enterprise shouldn't be a benchmark for the 'quality' of anything.

Or just ignore it all together, like some fans I know. For them Star Trek is TOS and the Abrams films and that's about it.

However, we live in the day and age where being reactionary is not expected, but required.

Ignoring is fine, nobody is forcing them to like something. Trashing things over and over and over everywhere the eye can see just makes everyone miserable though.

Also, imo, many of the plots in Discovery would certainly fit on TOS. The presentation is very different, but the stories really aren't.

Same could be said about the Kelvin universe films and look at how they are (still) reviled in some corners.

Hate is strong, irrational, and knows no depth to its misery.
