Star Trek Discovery - Why So Many Vocal Haters?

Status
Not open for further replies.
It's a little different from the usual Trek formula and many TV viewers and moviegoers today seem incapable of accepting something different. Also, the lead for "Discovery" is a black woman. A lot of Trek fans STILL cannot deal with a white woman in the lead. Having a black woman is even worse for them.

Every time a Discovery trailer drops on Youtube, or an ad on Facebook the comments are filled up with "THIS SHOW KILLED STAR TREK" and "THIS IS NOT STAR TREK!!!!" type of comments.... but why? While it's far from perfect, Discovery definitely has a Trek feel to me, just a but updated (just like all the other shows) The writing quality seems to be higher than Enterprise to, so why the overwhelming hate?
It's happened or happening to every fandom. See: The Last Jedi. See the DCEU. Entitled fanboys hate anything that deviates from how they imagine their favourite thing and we live in an age where anyone with their phone can have a moan.

Also, negative stuff generates more clicks, so there are more negative articles.

I think quality does have something to do with it though... Not everything is shredded to pieces on the internet...

Faint praise. Better than the show that killed the franchise on TV isn't good enough.

Discovery needed to be good. Not good compared to the cherry picked worst parts of other installments, but just plain good. As is, it's just the latest in a long line of mediocre efforts.

A lot of it is fan delusion. If I make loud and angry and constantly openly hostile posts, the writers and producers will read my comments and change the franchise to my liking.

I know it sounds crazy / insane. But a LOT of people behave the way they do because they think they are influencing the outcome with their hatred and relentless negativity.

*shrug* Star Trek has been mediocre... possibly forever when series are taken as a whole. Some series have absolutely amazing peaks, and those seem to be the only things remembered about those series.

And occasionally they seem to be right. For example, Lucas definitely listened to the "fans" aka haters after Phantom Menace, and Attack of the Clones was completely different (it fixed Phantom Menace's mistakes, but made whole new ones). I kind of wish the noisy haters had 0 influence on the creative product, but unfortunately they certainly have some.

Can't even compare the numbers (and anger) of haters here to other places on the internet. This place is positively tame, despite several... characters.

I agree 100%. This is a virtual paradise compared to some of the other cesspools.

I disagree. Burnham being Black is the one good thing I like about the character. Even conservatives recognize that African-American representation is important, given the history of Blacks in America.
If Burnham was a white woman.. the backlash would be strong with such a weak character and mundane performance.

That being said, Mulgrew was fantastic as Janeway. She elevated pisspoor writing with her charisma and screen presence. I can't say the same for Sonequa, who is upstaged by the other cast members.

This woman is clearly off her meds and crazed, but does bring up a good point about the hate talk on Youtube;

so why the overwhelming hate?
Because a lot of people found DIS really disappointing, me included. I enjoyed watching TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT more and I don't even think all of the older Star Trek series were masterpieces. I am mainly a TOS fan. The other older Star Trek series were okay and enjoyable enough though. DIS was less than okay.

If Burnham was a white woman.. a Hilary Clinton type, the backlash would be strong.

And Discovery focuses on their one main character more than any other Star Trek show. Neither the actress or the character are good enough for that kind of focus IMO.

But why? What's so bad about it compared to say... Enterprise?

If someone as commanding and badass as Danai Gurira was cast in the role, and played the Captain from the damn start...

Would have been fantastic.

It's just infuriating to watch something you used to be really into and participated in trashed by hacks hired by a corporation that clearly sees it as nothing other than an exploitable brand.

So "really disappointing" is an excuse to get on the interwebs and behave like an unrelenting ass?

That's silly talk.

These people the poster is talking about aren't "disappointed." They're raging lunatics.

Also: Discovery is the first franchise show since TNG that I made it more than 8-10 episodes in first run airing before quietly deciding I didn't need to watch it. To each their own.

Every franchise is "exploitable". I don't think there is some evil corporate plot to make Discovery a terrible show. These guys made the best show they could have and CBS gave them a heck of a budget to do it. You are free to not like it, but the issue isn't anyone shitting on anything.
