Favorite Trek Short Story?

What are some of your favorite Trek short stories? Everything is fair game; something from one of the anthologies, or Strange New Worlds, or even fan fiction. Throw in a novella if you want.

If fanfic is fair game, Phillip Carpenter's "The Fall of the Federation" from Best of Trek #2 is I think the only time the eventual collaspse of the UFP had been detailed. It's vaguely reminiscent of the future histories told in Asimov's Foundation books.

Almost all the stories in The Lives of Dax. And the Demora Sulu story in Tales from the Captain's Table.

I didn't like the New Frontier No Limits short stories, at least compared to the regular New Frontier novels.

I haven’t read many, but one that sticks out in memory is called maybe “Of Cabbages and Kings” from the Strange New Worlds amateur writer anthologies. It’s a story about the E-D computer having to save the day by itself after the entire crew disappears.

I've been thinking about that one after "Calypso."

A couple other stand-outs are "Make-Believe," from "Constellations," and "Guardians" from SNW. Oh, and "Whatever You Do, Don't Read This Story," also from an SNW.

I've never even heard of Best of Trek. Sounds interesting. Have you read "Our Million-year Mission" from SNW 6? Maybe a little fannish, but imaginative.

Almost all the stories in The Lives of Dax. And the Demora Sulu story in Tales from the Captain's Table.

Lives of Dax was one of the first books I read after the Destiny trilogy got me interested in TrekLit. I think it's probably the most consistent of the anthologies, though Prophecy and Change is still my favorite.

After seeing your post last night I went back and reread L of D. Just a really brilliant idea for an anthology. I think I like it better now than I did the first time. It's interesting to see how some of the stories ended up having a big impact on the DS9 relaunch.

Random tidbits:

- I completely missed the obvious reference to Ray Bradbury's "The Veldt" in the opening story. Pretty cool.

- Why the heck do Trills have pouches? I mean, before they discovered the symbionts why would they evolve them? Was this ever explained?

- I really dislike Curzon.

- My favorite stories from the collection are Sins of the Mother and Infinity.

Thanks, I appreciate it. :)

Best of Trek was a series of essay collections about Star Trek, collecting material from a magazine. There were 18 collections, and then two Best of Best of collections. For a young fan in the early 80s (ie., me), they were my only connection to other Star Trek fans, and the Star Trek II-III-era volumes (6 through 10) I read pretty obsessively.

I've not read it in a long time, but I remember liking it quite a bit.[/B]

I've read quite a few of the short story collections, and enjoyed a lot of the stories, but I can't really remember any off the top of my head right now.

I've always wondered if maybe they evolved from marsupials.

There was one from Strange New Worlds in which the Enterprise computer became self-aware. That was pretty cool, albeit very sad. :weep:

Of course, my favorite not-official short story is my own TIMELINES. See link in my signature block. Yes, that was a shameless plug.

- This one by Franklin Thatcher (SNW1) popped straight into my head, too. Although, it's not my favourite, it's certainly up there for the concept alone.

As others have mentioned, The Lives of Dax is a wonderful collection of short stories - my favourites being Lela: First Steps by Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Tobin: Dead Man's Hand by Jeffrey Lang, and Audrid: Sins of the Mother by S D Perry.

I thought the Strange New Worlds 2016 DS9 short stories were pretty good; the Benny Russell story "The Dreamer and the Dream" especially.

I'll second "Make Believe" from Constellations. As far as the anniversary anthologies go, I also liked "Friends with the Sparrows" from The Sky's the Limit and "Three Sides to Every Story" and "Face Value" from Prophecy and Change. "Nobunaga" from Shards and Shadows was also pretty memorable. As for Strange New Worlds, "Our Million-Year Mission" is a classic, but I also have a fondness for "The Last Tree on Ferenginar: A Ferengi Fable from the Future" in volume 9.

I mentioned above that Prophecy and Change was my favorite of the anthologies I've read so far. Maybe my love for the various DS9 characters has made me biased, but there are a lot of great stories in this collection, imo. I posted some thoughts on it in a previous thread.

My favorites:

Face Value
... Loved I Not Honor More
Three Sides to Every Story
Foundlings
The Devil You Know

Another anthology that I think highly of is Tales of the Dominion War. I don't hear many people talking about this one, but there are several stories in it that I like.

Top two:
Mirror Eyes
Eleven Hours Out

Also good:

The Ceremony of Innocence is Drowned
A Song Well Sung
Twilight's Wrath

I just rememberd one that stood out for me. I've been working my way through the Voyager anniversar anthology, Distant Shores, off and on for a while now and KRAD's Letting Go has been a stand out so far. It follows Janeway's fiancee Mark, and some other Voyager crew members' families back home from Season 2 until The Doctor ends up on the Prometheus in Message in a Bottle.

I remember that one. It's pretty good.

Although I don't understand the title. What the hell does "Of Cabbages & Kings" mean?
