If you could write a character for DS9, who would it be?

I've seen some people commenting on here about how DS9 seemed to lack a counselor and some other roles. I was wondering, if you could create your own character to be apart of the main cast, who would they be? What race? Backstory? What relationships would they have with our known characters?

(This is a little fanfiction-y, but I thought it would be fun)

I would have loved to create or have a Romulan presence onboard the station; probably Garak's assistant. It could've been male or female and I could've set up a scenario where no one trusted the character except for Sisko (My favorite character), and build from there. Odo has been intercepting some encrypted messages with a Breen signature but as he looks closer to the sequences he suspects the person sending them were Romulan. Sisko is informed and wants to believe this character is a good person but will not interfere with Odo's investigation. As Odo continue to snoop he's discovering new information about this new character which maybe a possible threat to a polarizing Vedek who may become the next Kai. Sisko is now compelled to be involved in the investigation because the plot has thickened and he goes to the limits until the story's final outcome.

I thought T'Rul was a wasted opportunity and could've place a nice footing for the random Romulan stories told in the third season, but I liked the idea. Thanks for the topic.

With DS9 being so remote, the fleet far from supporting the base and the defences being minimal, Starfleet attaches a squadron of Starfighters to give the station a much needed tactical boost. Lieutenant Raedeth Zyn is assigned as Wing Commander. A Bolian from one of the colonies near the Cardassian border, he has grown up knowing how difficult things can be in the region and has more contacts than most other officers. Confident in his abilities he expects nothing but the best from those under his command, and though he may play loose with his own life he would never put others in harms way. When the new peace treaty between the Federation and Cardassia is signed, he is vocal in his objections as his home is one of those no longer under the protection of the UFP. This conflict only escalates when his sister emerges as a prominent leader in the Maquis, as he must deal with the dilemma of siding with his duty or his family.

Couldn't think of any new characters that would be better than that. Kira wouldn't respect her because she didn't spend the Occupation fighting for her planet and because she's not religious. Ro would have to reconnect with her roots and possibly see some Bajoran behavior as backward.

Great question! I can't point to a specific character that I would create other than to say I would have liked there to be an Andorian on that station for the full 7 years, maybe even a Tellarite too. I always felt the core Fed races were a little under-represented on the show.

I don't feel the series needed a major starring or recurring character. I don't know how many full characters' stories they could tell. Indeed, they neede to write more for Jake in season 7.

However they should have filled out the tableau of life on the station with more minor recurring characters on par with Leeta. A Bajoran restaurant manager. Some NCOs under Odo. An actual communications officer in Ops to direct traffic around the station. Perhaps a cleric of another, perhaps alien, religion. I think such additions would make the station seem more alive.

A young female Ferengi running a small business on the prom, a butcher maybe, or tobacconist . Something that doesn’t complete with any of the other’s. She’s fled Ferenginar in pursuit of property and business rights, but is observant of the women go nude tradition. She’s well adjusted and affable, so the main conflict can be the clothes.

Done tastefully of course, I think it would have been interesting to explore the evolved sensibilities and attitudes of the enlightened federation toward a woman’s right to decide what to wear.

Star Fleet, i imagine, would offer clothes and ask that she considers where she is and the traditions and social mores of other species, but wouldn’t press the matter, Quark wouldn’t comment on the nudeness, as he would privately object to the female running a business. Odo, I imagine would be uncomfortable, and avoid eye contact, but not sure why, he’s a shapeshifter. The issues I suppose would come from Bajour; it’s their station and have their own identity to rediscover and assert after the occupation.

I wouldn’t write it for laughs.

I would pick an Andorian as new character. They did it in the Litverse and it worked. I would pick another of the four sexes, though. So not a Chan, but a Zhen or Shen. Definitely not a Thaan .

But not in an Austin Powers sort of way.

Could also use a nude suit for full frontals and take advantage of Ferengi anatomical differences to maintain a broadcastable level of decency, much like how CGI anthropomorphic animal characters don’t have butt holes, but they do have butts.

I agree with those who feel that T'Rul was a missed opportunity. I would've loved to see Ro on the show. I wished they had built up Eddington even more so that his betrayal would have had more impact. I also wish they had done more with Tom Riker and Cal Hudson.

T'Rul would've been a great recurring character, especially after Worf came onboard as a source of animosity, which could've evolved into a grudging respect.

Ro coming in for a guest appearance would've been great, she sneaks onboard, disguised as a Militia crewmember but is noticed by O'Brien. She's on a mission from the Maquis, looking for medical supplies when a plague starts sweeping through the DMZ colonies. O'Brien and Bashir go with her and together they discover that the plague was engineered by the Cardassians, in an attempt to claim the region for themselves. Would've been ideal for a two-parter.

Making more of Eddington would've made his betrayal all the more impactful, though it was still pretty shocking the first time I watched the episode, and even after he joined the Maquis--where they could've partnered him up with Cal Hudson to use Sisko's expertise to take on the Dominion.

Also having Tom Riker return in Season 7 for an episode, rescued by Kira only to be killed in action taking out a major target--could add some interesting tension for Kira, given her relationship with Odo at the time and the chemistry between her and Riker.

Reading your replies, just had this crazy thought. I hadn't considered Worf and T'Rul interacting, but now I've wondered if it would've been more interesting to see a Worf/T'Rul romance than a Worf/Jadzia one. While I was okay with the Worf/Jadzia romance I could've done without it as well. I also didn't like that Troi never showed up on DS9 so we could've gotten some resolution to the Worf/Troi romance-which I liked better than Worf/Jadzia. Also I wish when Alexander was having his troubles on the show, if he could've at least talked with Troi via subspace or something. It's unfortunate they never found a way to work Troi onto the show. I also wish that for the Worf/Jadzia wedding episode that some of the ENT-D/E crew had showed up for that. We know that Burton, Sirtis, Frakes, and Schultz at least were amenable to doing VOY and some ENT, so I assume they would've done DS9, or in Frakes's case, another DS9 episode. A great missed opportunity there.

Unlike you I wasn't that shocked about Eddington's betrayal because he was such a peripheral character that it didn't do much for me. When he first appeared he seemed kind of smarmy and I was hoping we would get more of that and him being a jerk or something, but then he just became a background player. He wasn't given enough development or enough screen time IMO for his betrayal to matter. Perhaps if Eddington had also been a survivor from the Saratoga it would've helped solidify the bond between him and Sisko, though that ran the risk of turning him into another Cal Hudson. But since they didn't revisit Hudson I wouldn't have minded so much.

I like the idea of Tom Riker returning, though I would've been fine if it had been before Season 7, and if he survived. Love your idea for Ro's return. That might have to become a United Trek story.

Another character (s) I would have liked to have seen return are the Borg. I wanted to see Sisko vs. the Borg again. When the movie First Contact was out, I often thought that Picard's words and actions fit Sisko more easily than Picard IMO. Sisko in First Contact would've been pretty epic.

I also would've liked to have seen Guinan on DS9, it was something they had tried to do but couldn't pull off. But also Nichelle Nichols, with a return of Uhura. Granted DS9 brought the TOS Klingons into the 24th century, but Uhura, Chekov, or Sulu being around would've been nice to see.

Currently he is assigned to the double-naught division of Section-31 and known by the code name: Agent Orange. He is covertly working aboard Deep Space Nine. He was briefly engaged to the agent known as Tangerine Dream (aka Maisy Le Duke) who defected to Ferenginar just prior to their wedding service. His cover would be that of a big time Hollywood movie director, Arri-Flex Q. Panavision.

Being a master of disguise he sometimes goes around as his twin-brother from another mother, Barry.
